Heh, I had Shenmue 2 for a couple days where I got it for free with this amazing coupon with Target.  The funny thing was, the receipt never said the $50 off was for Shenmue 2.  So 2 days later, I returned it and got $50 and bought RE0.  RE0 was amazing for the price I paid.

Games that don't get reviewed before their release tend to be shite. The companies know the game sucks, so they don't send out a review copy, and hope people will buy it on impulse.

This seems like it might be worth picking up when it hits bargain bins (most likely within a week of release). The original Alien Syndrome was pretty good, but only in very short bursts. I hope they haven't tried to cram a dramatic storyline or rap music in this new one.

But IGN's only major complaint is the graphics, and some early on melee weirdness that is meant to be fixed by the game's rpg system. And re-using some models for bosses.

I might still check the game out once it's cheaper.  The only thing that really sounds annoying to me is the pause when turning around.

Just played a good 3+ hours of this. I have nothing to complain about except that OH MY GOD these levels are long! How in the WORLD do they expect PSP players to play this on the go? I've just played for about 3 hours straight and STILL haven't beaten the first story mission!

Dude, it's Sega, I hope you weren't expecting a masterpiece. Keep your expectations low and you might not be disappointed. Then again, sometimes Sega can't even match your lowest expectations.

It's a gauntlet game with guns (and melee weapons). What's NOT to love?!?!?!

Besides, Sega only published this. This game is made by the guys who made the original X-Wing games back in the easrly 90's... totally games. They specifically chose this project because they were fans and have put in an extensive RPG skill system and 4 player co-op. They've even got some wiimote minigames to unlock sealed chests or to add extra stat points to yourself.

I don't know about you guys, but this game is far from low quality... except for the PSP graphics.

Exactly, most people can't get past the PSP caliber graphics. Actually, even then it's not something everyone will like, but I sure as hell do. This is a great 3rd party effort with the controls, but they lost a lot of sales and review points by not really improving the graphics. But if you can look past the graphics (and in a game like this if you're looking at the graphics and not focused on the action for more than half a second you won't last long) you'll find a game style that's been done before, only with the best targeting controls you could hope for.

You are right, the visuals aren't that important, what is important though is that it shows a high amount of laziness from developer when the Wii version doesn't look much if any better then a handheld game system. Support for lazy ports is not helping Wii at all.

It's not something that should be encouraged, but if the game is fun you shouldn't refuse to buy it because it has (really really) bad graphics.

The way I see it, PSP ports are better than nothing at all. I have two games that also showed up on the PSP, this and Heatseeker, and I enjoyed them both. As long as they improve the gameplay, which they did in both instances with very cool controls, and it's good, I buy it.

The developers (read: publishers) won't take poor sales as signs the game wasn't good, they'll take them as signs the Wii userbase doesn't want games like this and go back to making safe minigame collections. On the other side of that, if it does moderately well it may encourage them to put more effort and resources into their next Wii project.

I'm not saying rush out and buy every PSP port, but you shouldn't automatically dismiss a game because of that either. Nintendo has the attention of all the third parties right now, it would be best to try and retain that attention. This is a solid effort in everything but graphics. If it does at least moderately well we may keep the publisher's interest long enough to get another game, hopefully designed from the ground up on the Wii.

We haven't really seen anything like that yet, everything so far has been ported from something or another at some stage of development or been merely a minigame collection (which have their place too, I have and enjoy Rayman and WarioWare, but I don't want every other game on the console to be minigames). Mario Strikers was most likely Wii the whole way through, and it looks significantly better (graphics wise) than anything before it. Then Metroid comes next month. A game that proves the Wii can do a great action game, that it can do something epic, and shows that the machine is hardly a "GameCube 1.5" in terms of graphics.

If we can talk a publisher into letting a developer do a fullblown Wii exclusive, which shouldn't be too hard when you show them the sales figures, we'll see what they can do. If a publisher waited til the Wii was a bona fide hit and then started development on a real huge game it will be at least a year before we see it. This year we've got the (hugely great) showing from Nintendo and a few third parties who realized what Nintendo had on their hands soon enough. People have said Nintendo doesn't have much themselves next year, using all their aces this year. The strategy will work because by next fall we'll start to see what real third-party games that started life on the Wii can look like and play like; Nintendo won't be as needed because the third parties will start to shine.

Sorry about the rant, I just think that Nintendo has been hurting in the third-party area since the SNES, and we've finally got them back. Don't screw it up.

Sega is just as much responsible for the games quality as the developer, especially since they published the title. It is like Nintendo when they publish a game from a 3rd party developer, Nintendo is still responsible for the final product. From what I've read Alien Syndrome comes accross as an uninspired action game with RPG skill upgrades thrown in, with lazy choices such as reusing boss designs (I don't care what game it is, but when you reuse a boss design and change its color or something that is NOT quality in my eyes).

News Flash . . .

WHEN THIRD PARTY DEVELOPERS MAKE SOMETHING THAT IS WORTH PURCHASING THEN THEY WILL GET MY DOLLARS.

Seriously I don't understand people who think it's OUR responsibility to purchase proverbial garbage just so "oh maybe the developers will finally give us something worth while!". Screw that. Let them PROVE to me that they deserve my dollars and I'll buy their games.

It's shouldn't be the other way around where we have to prove to them to make worthwhile games.

The 3rd party support argument is weak, there are much better 3rd party titles out and coming out that you should support instead. You can show the developer you hate lazy ports, while at the same time supporting some of the higher quality Wii titles (even some of the ports are improved beyond the realm of "lazy port"). If anything, supporting a PSP game on Wii will show developers that Wii fans are desperate enough to buy any crap the developer wants to throw at us.

It could go either way. And like I said, I'm not suggesting we buy garbage. Alien Syndrome is not garbage. It may not look very good, but it plays well. It's not a crappy port, it's a very enhanced port, just not in the graphics department.

The whole supporting third parties thing wasn't all about this game. It was about supporting third-party development on the Wii period. If you don't want to buy this game, that's fine, but try to support third parties in some way. It's the way I think and rant, something spirals into something much bigger and I don't give much of an indication that it's moved beyond the original topic. I'll work harder to prevent that in the future.

It shouldn't be that way, no, but you have to realize that it is that way to a certain point. It's not the best way, but it is how it works. It's a bit of both. You keep calling this a lazy port; the only way it's lazy is the graphics, which is one of the hardest, most expensive, and most time consuming things to improve. Would it be nice if it looked better? Sure, of course it would. Would it make the game any more enjoyable for me? Not really, as I said you can't really pay too much attention to the graphics anyway. It's a solid game, and I don't in any way regret the purchase.

This is nearly completely unrelated, but my mind keeps going to Francis in Super Paper Mario, as I'm arguing passionately on a message board about a game I haven't played that much. We've been doing quite a bit of work on some home renovation projects and I've only been able to get a few hours in with the game. From what I've played however, I love it.

The only boss they reused in NSMB is baby bowser, which was a homage to Boomer. From the sounds of it these are main bosses in Alien Syndrome (BTW I am not that positive about NSMB either).
