The next next Mafia game: Calvin Ball edition.
« on: July 03, 2007, 06:09:40 PM »
Alright, I may or may not decide to host the thing myself, but I'm more concerned with creating what could potentially be the wackiest mafia ever, so starting tomorrow, I'm going to be working on creating the rules for the first game of Mafia: Calvinball.

Definite roles:
Calvin
Hobbes
Rosalyn
Susie
Calvin's Dad
Calvin's Mom
Spaceman Spiff
Mrs. Wormword

I need ideas for each of these, though.  Calvin's Dad's role must deal with polls and voting, and whatnot, while his mother will have to work directly opposite of his role.

I'd like to add in Good Calvin, the transmogrifier, along with several other things, perhaps introducing an item system.  Anyways, we'll work out a great design eventually, it's not like there's a time limit or anything.

I think items would work well going to the player with the second largest amount of votes, or perhaps to someone who wins a secret ballot or something.  Like I said, throw out ideas, everything needs to relate to the comic strip origins.  Also, I need suggestions of how to draw up the sides, like kids vs. adults, boys vs. girls, imagination vs. reality, or Tyrannosaurs in F-14s vs. Triceratops.  Let's figure this thing out!  Break!

First off, what is happening with Shift Key's mafia? Has that been scrapped forever? Is now just vaporware?

Second, what about the mature Unclebob mafia we were promised? Was that just another third party stringing us along and then deciding to change their tune? When will finally see some evidence of this game actually existing? It's more vaporware than Skift Key's game.

Third, I'd advise you to look up Mafia 12: Funhouse Mafia. And you'll want to read through the roles and the first day of voting. That has been the, shall I say, whackiest mafia game so far. That may give you some ideas. As well to, look up other old mafia games for roles and ideas that have been suggested and forgotten about.
Whoever said, "Cheaters never win" must've never met Khushrenada.

Yeah, I plan to, I saw some of them when you mentioned them to me before.  I suppose I could add a few next's to the title of the thread, since I'm not entirely sure about when this will occur.  I wanted to set up some ground rules first, to get an idea of how things would work.

Lack of retailer interest in UncleBob's uber-mature mafia caused it to be shelved indefenitely...
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

The game will be broken into several quarters.  We will start with pre-game, where all players will receive a role, being a Calvinball player if he or she is good w/o a role.  There will be a one-three hour break between every quarter, and most role-specific actions will take place during this time.  During a normal quarter, votes will be pm'ed to me then all votes will be revealed at the start of the next quarter.  For the first quarter, all votes will be made in the open, not pm'ed to me, so the game can start with conversation.

Calvin's Dad is a tricky role.  Ever fluctuating in the polls, Calvin's Dad wants to remain in the running, but not appear to want the job too much.  As the head of Calvin's household, Calvin's Dad cannot be killed by our mafia squad.  He's able to talk his way out of the kill using confusing backwards logic about where the sun lands and the like.  No one can perceive his importance, in fact, when investigated, he appears to be the standard Calvinball player.  However, he is not allowed to hint or reveal himself to anyone in anyway.

Calvin's Dad's aim is to be the third highest voted player of the quarter.  If he achieves this, he is given two options.  He can go to work, or he can cut out the roughhousing.  When Calvin's Dad goes to work, as a patent attorney, he is able to research the roles of three players of his choosing.  He may then choose a time in-between quarters to defend two players of his choice from the quarter vote.  This allows him to half the total number of votes any player receives in the proceeding quarter.  He may do this once for each time he goes to work, and it will be revealed that he has done so.  Votes will be revealed to be cut, but who voted whom shall be made known.  Because Calvin's Dad can choose whatever quarter he wants to use this ability, the votes which allowed him to use this technique will still be revealed.
His second option is to cut the roughhousing.  This stops every action from occurring in-between the quarter proceeding this choice.  This occurs immediately after being the third place-voted player, and as a result, the votes for the day will not be revealed, and instead, the actions that roles choose to perform in-between periods will be revealed, though they weren't performed.

As you can see, Calvin's Dad is a powerful role to have.  There is a trade-off, though.  If Calvin's Dad goes three days in a row without receiving at least two votes in a single day, he dies.

And I'm looking for potential player feedback on these roles as I create them.  I intend the game to run heavily on honesty of players.  No PMs will be allowed, except for the mafia players, and all conversation must be held in the appropriate forum topics, out in the open, or with me, if you have a question.  I'm not sure yet if we will have hidden roles in the game.  I'm still looking to hear some ideas, so let me know if you have any input!

Votes - Voting will work differently this time around.  Players can choose to vote to kill someone, or to save someone.  Players can actually perform both actions on any day, however, there will be a 1/6 chance everyday that each player that exercises this ability on said day will have a 1/2 chance of dying.  Basically, that means that you have a 1/12 chance of dying if you choose to both vote for and against someone.
In the event of a tie at the end of the day, none of the tied players will die, and instead, every player that created the tie will face a 1/6 chance of dying.  Players who assisted in the tie and used both their voting abilities will face a 1/3 chance of dying instead of a 1/6 chance.
