SMS is not counted when bundled.  The game is inside the box and not scanned, and therefore it does not register as a sale in the NPD data.

Yes, and that's why the game is listed twice on the NPD charts, once as the stand-alone game and once as part of the bundle -- they might not scan the game, but do they do scan the box that it is contained in, and since every box contains one copy of the game -- presto!  I simply added the two numbers up to arrive at the figure I posted above.

I don't have the figures in front of me, but I think w/o the bundle sold about a million copies, and another half-milllion were sold with the bundle.

Any idea why Skies of Arcadia is not selling that well?  It is not available locally, but this is a smaller town.  Well enough be sold for a sequel on the Cube?  How many have been sold?

jarob:  Skies of Arcadia isn't selling really bad, but its not selling that great either.  As I wrote above, the two month total (actually just three days and a month) is 45,000.  The original for the Dreamcast sold just 100,000 copies.  If the GCN version sells 100,000, that might be enough for a sequel.  200,000 would make it an unqualified hit, but its looking increasingly unlikely that it will reach that benchmark.

If Sega would have ramped up the advertising for the game, it might have sold better.  They targeted the hardcore gamer by advertising in gaming magazines and websites, which was a good move.  But, I think they should have went the extra mile and bought some television commercials during cartoons/children's programming to reach the supposed "kids" audience they were aiming for.  I find it interesting that Sega's stated intended audience and their marketing strategy didn't exactly mesh.  Troublingly, they seem to view the game as a niche title and are willing to leave it at that.

Ask Dreamcast owners if sales matter.  They'll tell you YES sales matter...or more accurately, lack of sales.  Sales determine whether or not Nintendo will still be a player in the next console war (2005-10) or go bankrupt like previous gaming companies (Atari, Coleco).

(Looks at MPD chart.)  Where is Mario Sunshine listed twice?  I only see it once.  Where did you get your numbers from?

I didn't ask if they mattered, I asked who cared...I really don't care how crappy a game sales just as long as I have fun.

I vouch that the figures I gave above are a totally accurate (give or take 1,000-2,000 games) representation of games sold in North America.  Unfortunately, my word of honor doesn't seem to be going for too much nowadays.

If you'd like to check my calculations, simply open up this link courtesy of Mingnesium:  January Sales, and then find the ten games in question.  Then, simply add the numbers theaveng posted for February to the figures you find from the link.  Voila!  You should end up with about the same numbers that I posted (remember that I included the bundled Super Mario Sunshine games in my SMS figure).  Happy calculating!
