Neo Geo on VC in US.
« on: April 18, 2007, 04:03:37 PM »
Oh happy day.

And guess what? It won't be the usual suspects.

Quote

"...If we had a chance to bring out two games for our first month I wouldn't want it to be King of Fighters '94 and Metal Slug 1. That wouldn't be the plan. We have 120 different Neo Geo titles… there's plenty to select from."

SNK Prez Ben Herman speaking.  120 Titles? That's more than just Metal Slug or KOF, even Samurai Shodown.

Now if they can be priced somewhat fairly...

They said they'd try to price it a little above SNES titles.

Oh well! I'll probably buy a KOF just for the heck of it! I already have the Metal Slug anthology though...

How much were games for the Neo Geo back when it was released?  I thought it was something along the lines of a lump of gold or your first born child.
This cost will most likely be much less.

I don't know if it's THAT much more than those games, considering there's 97 KOF games, not including Capcom VS SNK.

Color me impressed by that bottom part where the developers made those kind of graphics run on 14 year old hardware.

Yeah, then it was $200 or more for games on the platform when released.  I think almost any price they stick on their games will technically be a steal, since you won't be able to obtain the games legally for anything close to ten bucks now.

Baseball Stars 2.  Everyone needs to play this game.  Once you have you will find all other baseball games boring and dull... more so than they usually are.

Did the home verions of Neo-Geo games have any extra home version style content (vs. mode in fighting games for example) or were they just the arcade games on free play?  While I love Neo-Geo games straight up arcade ports usually are short on options.

So Sony should sell SNK Arcade classics.

I remember with the 1st Samurai Shodown, the US Version had white blood instead of red blood. Careful tinkering ROMage you could fix that. You could select your difficulty, but could only set a max amount of continues to keep you honest.

Essentially they took the arcade board, slapped some plastic on it and voila, arcade quality games, no downgrading needed. No extra content either though. But most Neo Geo games were meaty in their own right, so they really didn't need it.

I recommend giving Shock Troopers a whirl if/when they release it. Its an over-the-top top down shooter with 6 selectable characters with different weapons and strategy. You could pick your paths a la Star Fox 64.  Its one of those quality shmups that time forgot.

As mentioned earlier, basically almost any price short of triple digits is a steal. It really is priced to sell. Be warned though, the early games in Neo Geo's long life cycle weren't that good, but once you get Fatal Fury/ Samurai Shodown era, its on!

Mindless monster wrestling destruction, and a lot more fun than Rampage.

I dunno, aren't a lot of them available as compilations?
There are also a ton of Neo Geo games on GameTap, but none of the KoF or Metal Slug series. Probably the same pool of "more obscure" titles that they plan to release for VC, actually. Check out that list if you want a vague sense of what they might have in mind.

Good point.  I didn't think about that.  Of course, if you didn't like subscription services, then that drastically reduces the odds of finding these games, except in a few compilations.  They're still pretty hard to find, and only limited games were produced in those compilations, but you're right, nonetheless.

On a related note, can anyone tell me if the SNES King of the Monsters 2 is the same as the Neo Geo King of the Monsters 2?
They're both sidescrollers, and not fighters like the Genesis version, but I was wondering if the Neo Geo version had any extras.

Okay, why don't you go pay the $200 ebay fee for these and be happy about it.  900 points is a steal compared to what these carts cost.
