I know it has more than the GC, but the GC had far from enough either so saying the Wii has more isn't necessarily saying much. The problem is the 3rd party support is hardly there at all, and Nintendo should have known this and doubled or even tripled their own 1st and 2nd party efforts in order to fill the void. They have all this money now so buying or creating new studios to get more games pumped out is something they should have done a couple years ago, but they didn't.

Unfortunately, now its catching up with them. The Wii is losing steam while at the same time the PS3 is gaining it. It never should have gotten to this point, because Nintendo should have been doing everything they could to increase the Wii's library so that it could have as many titles on the chart as the competition. Their mistake was they counted on 3rd parties to do that for them, and now they're paying the price because 3rd parties never backed the Wii even though it was so popular for so long. Now the popularity is fading and what is left for the Wii now? I see tons of titles coming to 360/PS3 but not to the Wii. This shouldn't have been allowed to happen.

Nintendo takes it's time on it's games, it's been like that forever and its up to other companies to fill the void. It's not like at any given moment a company just has nothing to do. No doubt they work like animals, and when that project is done they work some more.  Having more 1st and 2nd party games is obviously a great solution, but really it can't always be the best solution. If we got 1.5 times more the 1st and 2nd party games chances are there would be dips in quality.

Quote
Nintendo's latest half-year earnings show a net loss of $25m; the first loss in ovrer seven years...

Nintendo's earnings for the six months leading up to September showed a net loss of just over 2 billion yen ($25 million). Sales fell by over 33 percent to 363.2 billion yen. In the same period a year ago, the company enjoyed a net profit of almost 70 billion yen. However, Nintendo still forecasts a full-year net profit of 90 billion yen.

The slump is attributed to a number of factors, including an unusually strong yen - up to a fifteen year high against the dollar - and waning sales of the Wii and DS consoles, most likely due to a relative lack of system-selling software.

The company's yearly earnings will also no doubt be affected by the delayed release of the 3DS, now set to miss the holiday period across the world.

I'm shocked that Nintendo is losing money. This doesn't make much sense at all, and I can't explain it... so I don't know what to say. The only thing I can think of is that when they cut the price of the Wii from $249 to $199 that might have brought to the point where they were suffering a loss with each unit sold, but I don't know if that's true or not.

I'm pretty sure at one point Nitnendo was making close to if not more than $100 per Wii sold at $249.99
I'm sure they are still making close to those margins($60-$80) at $199.99 now too.

What Nintendo doesn't seem to get though is that they could probably boost hardware sales again if they just allowed you to transfer your Wii account to a new Wii and started offering Wii's with much bigger internal storage. 4GB internal flash would cost them a few dollars at most per unit. I'm sure plenty of you could justify selling your old Wii off to buy a new one if these changes were made.

Super Mario Collection sold more than Kirby Epic Yarn and Metroid Other M combined. I hope Nintendo doesn't get the wrong impression from this...

It already got the impression from the sales of the NSMB games. That's why SMC even exists. It doesn't matter how bored Miyamoto is with 2D Mario, it's still more popular.

Alright, but what is the reason why they're losing money? They are the market leader and have tons of multi-million sellers on both the handheld and console markets, so how can they be losing money? The GC was profitable in all except one quarter, and the GC had no where near the popularity of the Wii, so how could it have been profitable but Nintendo is losing money in this quarter? It doesn't make sense. They're not selling their systems at a loss, and the games are selling well.... so what gives?

The only thing I can think of is that when they cut the price of the Wii from $249 to $199 that might have brought to the point where they were suffering a loss with each unit sold, but I don't know if that's true or not.
