Yep. She's won me over. Lost in Translation was a major masterpiece, and Marie Antoinette is a fascinatingly vapid gem that just WORKS. Anyone care to agree?

off topic: I must make two claims now: one, I was so a fan of Sofia Coppola before Lost in Translation ever came out, and two, I was so a fan of Scarlet Johannsen before Lost in Translation ever came out, and for her acting, not her boobs.

Scarlet Johannsen was in a great movie I saw this weekend. It was called The Prestige, it was directed by Christopher Nolan.

...seriously... I'm a fan of Scarlett Johannsen because of Girl with a Pearl Earring. Seriously, I can watch that movie over and over and over again.

And Sofia Coppola is hot.

Yeah, Sophia Coppola. I'm not cool like Svevan, so Lost in Translation is the only film of hers I've seen. It's the bestest thing ever.

Most people I know share that very opinion of Lost In Translation. Personally, I loved it. I think the major problem that most people have with that particular film is that it's unconventional.
Most movies start at point A, progress & escalate to point B and somehow end-up at point C. This movie breaks that kind of storyline pacing and never moves beyond point B. It's different, but definitely not for everyone.

LIT was pretty boring because almost nothing was happening. If I wanted to watch a guy doing everyday things with nothing interesting happening I'd buy a mirror.

The mirror presents a dilemma since a lot of things you'll end up doing will probably keep you from looking at the mirror.

Using "PGC poster _____" or "PGC staffer _____" would be more applicable.

Lost in Translation simply showed what it's like to be lost in life. Johannsen's character calls up a friend and tells her that she didn't feel anything at the Buddhist shrine, and starts to cry. She recognizes what it is to wander without purpose - her counterpoint is Bill Murray who thought he lived a great life, and is now realizing that perhaps he hadn't. He is on the other end of life, and sees in her himself. Japan is the metaphor for their combined lostness - the foreign language, foreign setting, and bizarre cultural rules all combine, but it is when the two work together that they find at least a little contentment.

The movie is whispy, does not focus on any moment for too long, and does not unfold with a bullet point plot outline, or any of the typical narrative conventions. It simply floats, as the characters do, through a stage of life that is confusing and frustrating.

I brought the movie up because I'm feeling exactly that right now - I can't afford to go to school, but I don't want to continue my working-class job. Without PGC, I'd have very little to be excited for every day. Lost in Translation does not pretend that the questions can get answered and the problems solved - indeed, after the characters recognize how important each one is to the other, they are torn apart by their life obligations.

It's a bit poetic and a bit soft, but staggering and pitch perfect. I'm now realizing it's one of my favorites.

Svevan is correct. The movie is great because it captures a certian aspect of life beautifully.

I suppose you, a middle-aged actor who regularly finds special connections with younger american women while visiting Japan, would find the movie boring and everyday.

Speaking of not staying awake, I tried to like The Incredible Hulk and had the same problem. Movies are one part experience TIH suffered from catching me at my lowest energy point during the week - 11 PM on a Friday night.

Not to say you were too tired to appreciate Lost in Translation, maybe you were fresh as a daisy, I just think it's interesting how a movie gets one chance to make an impression on you, and everything from who you're watching it with to what time of day it is can affect that.

I kept falling asleep watching it, I tried to watch both like 3 times, every-time, i fall asleep.

Sofia Coppola is a mediocre filmmaker with a big financial push from her far more talented (at one time) pop. Lost In Translation was only okay.
