cant get widescreen to run on gamecube
« on: October 03, 2006, 11:30:49 PM »
i used the trick of pushing b button to get progressive scan to work and that works, but now i cant get widescreen to work.  what games are in widescreen?  well i have f zero and eternal darkness and i know they run in widescreen, in f zero i went in the menu and clicked on widescreen but it still runs in standard, how do i get it to run in widescreen mode?

If your TV is widescreen, make sure it doesn't switch to a fullscreen mode after it detects GameCube's p.scan.

If your TV is a slightly older square TV w/ p.scan, you have to make sure to switch it to widescreen.

Some games don't have full widescreen menus, it'll still look squarish and centered on your widescreen TV.  You'll have to load up a gameplay phase (race/mission/etc) to see if it truly switched to widescreen.

i have a 16x9 tv screen man.  i use xbox360 all the time and all my games run in widescreen HD.  but when i use the gamecube it says on the screen they are running in progressive scan, but it is only playing in the 4x3 in the middle of the tv.

If the game supports progessive scan it does not mean that it has a 16:9 mode. All it means is that you will have a clear and crisp image compared to an interlaced signal.

Here is a list of GC games that support 480i, 480p, 480p with 16:9, or just 16:9 > http://www.hdtvarcade.com/hdtvforum/index.php?autocom=custom&page=gamecubeac .

I'm sure there's just a slight oversight somewhere...

If the 4x3 square image from F-zero looks squished (tall/skinny), then the game is doing its job, and the game was set correctly.  It should be obvious when you toggle between Normal & Widescreen options.

GameCube and DVD players rely on the "old" widescreen method, where the image still ONLY occupies about 640x480, and it's up to the user to make the TV stretch the image properly.  In the case of typical Widescreen HDTVs, it must be set to Stretch the picture horizontally, rather than inserting black bars on the sides.  xbox360 HD images don't deal with this at all, because HD doesn't require stretching.

That's about the best I can say, without knowing the exact TV model you have and maybe a photo of how F-Zero shows up.

Interesting, I'd been trying to figure out whether there's any point to using the 16:9 mode on my new TV.  Seems to me that there's not, since it uses less of the screen area with empty space on the top and bottom, and there's minimal benefit in the games.  Of course if your TV is natively 16:9, running the games in 4:3 would just leave you with empty space on the sides.
