Read Kotaku's rundown of X06 for a quick overview of Microsoft's X06 major press conference news.

Too lazy? How about:

-Peter Jackson (the DIRECTOR) founding a game development studio with Microsoft to work on two games, one of 'em using the Halo universe!
-Halo RTS announced
-GTA IV coming out next November, BUT the XBox 360 will have TWO EXCLUSIVE episodes released via Live a couple months later that Sony won't get!
-The next Splinter Cell after Double Agent will be X360 EXCLUSIVE!
-BioShock will have Windows and X360 timed exclusivity at least! (PS3 version may not even exist?)
-NEW BANJO & KAZOOIE GAME FROM RARE
-Marvel Universe MMO for X360 and Windows by the makers of City of Heroes
-DOOM out on XBOX Live NOW, Sensible Soccer coming soon
-external HD-DVD player for X360 coming out in U.S., U.K. France and Germany in mid-November

... Microsoft is really, really, hungry. I think with their Peter Jackson collaboration, their attempts to wrangle exclusive content or actual exclusivity for BioShock, GTA IV and Splinter Cell, AND their positioning X360 to be an equal value to the PS3 this fall... Sony could be in trouble.

And I serious think that anyone who pooh-poohs MS or doesn't have them on their radar is liable to get a rude awakening. Microsoft is aggressive, they're young, talented, hungry, and they're looking very, very, confident.

They may actually beat out P3 this generation, and if the Wii's blue ocean masses don't materialize... the X360 could get dominant marketshare.

Yay for Banjo Kazooie, I hope... not sure if Rare can pull it off, and the second was already getting worse.  Most of this news is not that exciting to me.  The Marvel Universe MMO sounds kind of cool.  The milking of Halo does not.  The other announcements are decent but they continue in the original Xbox's tradition of having halfway exclusives.

Microsoft is definitely being aggressive, and I do think the company could make big strides in the west, but I doubt that it will make any progress in Japan, which I think will ultimately prevent it from achieving the kind of dominance Sony had for the last two generations.
That's my opinion, not yours.

What does this mean for the PS3 in the western market though? Will we see an the X360 command a permanent lead over the PS3 in America and Europe?

... And if MS and Sony really ARE going to get entangled and duke it out, does this provide an opening for Nintendo?

Milking Halo too much risks killing the appeal of the franchise in a hurry.  Typically once games just start getting cranked out at a rapid pace the game loses that special "it" factor that makes it a killer app.  It still sells but doesn't draw people to the console anymore.

Still getting exclusive Splinter Cell and exclusice GTA content are pretty good moves.  Having Peter Jackson involved is just a great marketing tool even if the resulting games aren't that hot.  I'm excited about Banjo-Kazooie but I wonder if the Xbox fanbase will be.  They're not typically all that interested in fluffy happy games like Banjo.

What does Doom on Xbox Live mean?  The original game?

Well, Mocrosoft sent Halogens (a mod for Command and Conqer Generals that had been in development for THREE YEARS and had been endorsed by the Bungie team) a Cease and Desist letter for fear of it competing with their RTS. Since they're afraid of a mod for a three-year-old game, I'm not sure how confident they are.

(I've been watching that mod since the beginning... I swear I'll never legally purchase another piece of MS's crap again.)

IANAL but I'd imagine it has less to do with competition and more to do with trademark dilution.

I thought the team behind that game was employed by Microsoft to make Halo Wars... was that a lie?

All of this sounds absolutely terrible and boring.  Two of those things seemed vaguely interesting, beyond that it does nothing for me.
And sure, the hardcore Xbox gamers will rant and rave about all this good news, but it's the same terrible developers making the same terrible games, that were terrible from the start.  So I personally have no interest.

I have to say an RTS Halo will go nowhere on consoles, its one thing to attempt a PC FPS on a console but trying to do a RTS, thats never gone over well.  Hmmm except Pikmin but that is nowhere near large scale as starcraft or Command & Conquer.  Any Halo fan too ignorant to realize how badly the controls will be will find themselves out of $60.

Also about Rare, if Conker, a cute fluffy type game mixed with some extreme action attitude can't sell what makes you think Banjo will.  If Rare wants to stop bleeding money out its @ss they need to release something saleable on 360.  Personally I have no faith in them whatsoever now, seeing as how they ruined Perfect Dark.

I didn't mind the Joanna change all that much (does that make me a bad person?)

But this....just look at how awesome Banjo was, circa the original Rare-Xbox announcement:

Forget Celda. THIS is what a horrific bait-and-switch looks like.
