Stadiums are big places that seat thousands. I'm sure there's a lot that happens in them, I'm sure there's lots of ways to get lost in one, lots of concession stands to visit, and lots of hidden hallways and stuff like that.

While that would be cool, I think Nintendo should stick to it's tried and true formula. Going across huge distances and different locales to fight Pokemon Dojo masters has always been appealing and it will continue to be appealing.
Like Ian said, simply transfering the franchise to 3D will make it seem fresh and new. That's all the innovation they need really. Add in some very beautiful graphics (for things like the location, i.e. forest, ocean, etc.) and maybe a Wiimote pokeball toss and you have yourself a hit.
Hell, I'd be tempted to check it out, if the exploration factor is anything like Zelda's.
