Well, I always figured on the updating, rather than revolutionizing nature of the Pokemon franchise was due to the fact that an outside studio, Game Freak, did the development; I counted it as Nintendo inasmuch as it was part of Super Smash Bros., but I felt it could be handled differently than Mario and Zelda. Besides, the basic structure of Red/Blue is so brilliant, I don't mind playing through it *counts* nine times on the handhelds alone.
The console games are a different story. The two Stadium games where the best, and especially 2's wide range of cups and all that mini-game stuff made you really feel like you were getting a lot of bang for your buck. Plus, playing the gym leader's castle was the closest thing to a genuine Pokemon console RPG. Until Colloseum, which, as opposed to every other Pokemon game I own, I haven't finished. The leveling up is awkward and difficult, the story doesn't have the innocence of the Game Freak games, and they forgot to put the cups in, taking out a lot of what made the Stadium games worth playing. I haven't bought Pokemon XD yet, but I suspect more of the same.
So, if Pokemon BR can bring back the charm of the Stadium games (that they used Red & Green from the Kanto games is a good sign), I'd be very pleased. I'm sure I'll end up buying it anyway, but I'd rather do it with enthusiasm.
