Pokemon Battle Revolution!

Nintendo apparently just held a meeting or something, where they announced Pokemon Battle Revolution for Wii. It will have connectivity with the DS Diamond/Pearl and be released a few months after. Looks like another Stadium from the one pic currently available, i'm happy that they haven't attempted another generic RPG with this (hopefully).

Looks great! Pikachu looks a bit different but the style is definitely interesting

If this is a stadium game I won't mind as long as they do it up right.  Pokemon Stadium 2 on the N64 was an awesome pokemon companion with great organization features.  I wouldn't mind that as long as something more substantial is in the works.

Also, I wish I had a firm translation of what I'm looking at so I could put it up here...

Pokemon is the one franchise that could've single-handedly sold more N64s and GCNs, but Nintendo just did not capitalize on its success.  The window of opportunity is barely open to do this and yet Nintendo has not capitalized with the MMORPG that everyone's been asking for.  Pokemon can put Nintendo WiFi on the map in a hurry if done right.

I full expect this game to have WiFi features.  It won't be an MMO, but you can still trade, battle, and hopefully enter tournaments online I'm sure.

God, why do people still talk about a Pokemon MMORPG when there are so many huge daunting challenges that need to be overcome if the game goes in that direction! Blockbuster Traditional MMORPGs take YEARS of development and are the DEVIL to do right!

i lost all interest in pokemon back in the days of 64, but if they made an mmorpg where i could use the wiimote to simulate throwing a pokeball into battle, i'd give it a shot ;-)

Sounds like reason enough that we haven't seen one yet but doesn't prove that one isn't in development

I do agree on some level though.  Older PokeGeeks (like me) would want more than Nintendo could deliver anyway.  They need kids to play Pokemon, and parents won't be keen on throwing their kids out there to the predators...  sexual predators =P  So lets not turn this thread into a NiNTENd0 SHULD MAKES TEH MMO POKYMAN thread and instead discuss what can be done to improve the stadium games!

Hmmm... IGN claims a Dec. 2006 release date for Pokemon Diamond/Pearl in Japan. 3 months after that is March 2007, which is sort of 9 months from now, enough time to pump out a Pokemon Stadium type title assuming they only started developing right now.

"The window of opportunity is barely open to do this and yet Nintendo has not capitalized with the MMORPG that everyone's been asking for."

The MMO stuff is a relatively recent idea.  The original game everyone wanted back on the N64 was a 3D Pokemon RPG that played like the Gameboy games with going to gyms, capturing Pokemon, etc.  The time to have released this was early in the Cube's life, around 2002 or so.  At that point the craze was still reasonably strong and it would have sold Cubes like hotcakes.  The Xbox would NEVER have pulled ahead that Christmas if they had this game on the Cube.  Instead Pokemon Colloseum came out way too late and although technically an RPG it was completely devoid of all the elements that make Pokemon fun and is one of the most frustratingly bad games I've ever played.  Nintendo blew it.  They had the perfect killer app and now it's too late for it to quite have the same punch it would have had a few years ago.

Not that they shouldn't ever release such a game.  It would still sell really well and every killer game helps.  The way Nintendo has handled Pokemon has been very non-Nintendo like.  Normally they seem to recognize the importance of making really phenomenal sequels and not relying entirely on a franchise name to attract sales.  But with Pokemon they've released all sorts of substandard junk and although Gold/Silver was awesome they phoned it in with the GBA Pokemon games.  They've handled Pokemon more like how I would expect EA to handle a franchise.

Pokemon Battle Revolution looks nice anyway and I'm glad they're not doing any BS where the seperate Stadium into two games and try to sell junk like Pokemon Box as a seperate game.  I've never liked how Nintendo has handled Pokemon but they did a WAY better job with it during the N64 days than the Cube days so if they're going back to the N64 way of doing things that's an improvement.  Plus it's kind of cool that this game is coming out so soon.  They've got a lot of stuff in the works for the Wii.

I don't know Ian. An awesome pokemon remincent of the GBA with a WiFi Stadium multiplayer would be a killer-app for sure (at least in Japan).

People would train there pokemons for months just so they could compete in the latest and greatest tournament. Add in fantastic prizes if you win, and you not only have a cult following, but also a killer-app on your hands.

Nintendo had the kids version of Grand Theft Auto in 2000 and totally blew it.

Now they have the kids version of...um... The Getaway. Not blockbuster, but a solid franchise. They're still blowing it.

MAKE A NORMAL, 30-HOUR POKERPG FOR WII. With a storyline. Sell 2 million of them. Not that difficult.

But that is the path to the dark side Frozen Atlantic!

Pokemon from a game design standpoint is stagnant and tired. Nintendo needs to friggin innovate a little with the core series.

In Japan yeah.  And by regular videogame standards such a game would still be a killer app.  But Pokemon used to be a mainstream killer app in North America.  It was one of those games that EVERYONE was somewhat familiar with even if they didn't play it.

"Pokemon from a game design standpoint is stagnant and tired. Nintendo needs to friggin innovate a little with the core series."

Well they've never done it right in 3D.  I figure such a game would be as innovative as Zelda's transition to 3D.  It'll be like the N64 days when Nintendo was making old franchises feel new again just by switching them to 3D.

An online enabled Pokemon game is pretty much what every pokemon fan has been wanting since the beginning.  It would give the Pokemon franchise new life.

Like you said, it would give people reason to actually train their pokemons so they can compete online.
