With Wind Waker, Nintendo was going with a new artisistic direction that many people didn't understand. They thought the game would be worse off, but it was actually better. Now, Nintendo is going with a new marketing direction that many hardcore gamers don't understand. They think sales will be worse off, but Nintendo thinks they know better.
Not that Nintendo is anywhere near as good as marketing as they are at making good games, but that's not the point. The point is, Nintendo fans don't know anything.
...Or at least, every new direction Nitnendo takes causes an uproar, and said uproars are not good indications of whether Nintendo's new directions are good or bad.
