Great post Starxxon, it got me thinking.

Think about a 37 year old man who hasn't played a game since Pong, he's walking through Target, sees a bunch of systems on the shelf, Playstation / Xbox / Revolution / Dreamcast / Nintendo / whatever, he keeps walking, because he's just not into games anymore. He sees the Wii, and stops. Has a look. If Nintendo have done a job enough job making the system a true gaming revolution, he will take interest in it.

Can't wait for E3

A) You're surprised by the reaction? I saw this coming within a couple neuron firings of seeing those three letters. And the rest of the internet appears to be giving it to Nintendo far worse than PGC is.

B) Crybaby brats are Nintendo's target audience.

C) Your reaction was the absolute worst of all, and I am this close to banning you because I don't like your stupid name, which would be a good object lesson for your deeply flawed logic.

I think the Wii is destined for mainstream. Wii, mainstream get it, hahahahaha.

Actually when I heard the name I died a little inside, this is my only way to cope.

it's quite amazing to see that content means absolutely nothing to some consumers. i thought that was a mid-90's thing.

Color me disappointed in the lot of you.  And consider this the shattering of the last illusion I had of PGC forum's intellectual authority.

Oh snap... Aren't you the PGC'er that made the ridiculous comment that anybody that plays videogames over 30 (unless it's their job) is a stunted manchild? Yeah, thanks for your latest judgement of us. It holds weight.

I'm still pissed about this, they could have polled a message board and come up with a better name than this.  Nintendo now has as much of a chance in America as Microsoft in Japan.  And they had so much going for them, it is just disappointing, every cycle Nintendo makes stupid...no, retarded mistakes that shouldn't make it beyond someone's common sense defense; I'd fire someone if I ran a billion dollar company and the words "let's name it Wii" dribbled out of someone's mouth onto the table.  This isn't what you name your child if you want people to take him seriously in life.

"IGN Wii: We're now called IGN Wii. How could you do this to us?

Perrin Kaplan: Say that again."

When I read that, I knew I was not alone in being turned off by this name.  I don't know how anyone could defend this.  I don't even want to tell my friends this, I'm not, I'm just going to keep calling it Revolution.  If I told them Nintendo changed the name of their new console to Wii as in you want to play with my weewee, it wouldn't be good.  They are already biased Madden gamers.

Has anyone seen any pictures of the logo with two penises in place of the ii yet?  Because it is going to happen if it hasn't already.

For the record, I like this name.

In fact, I like it more today than yesterday. But not as much as tomorrow.

So...uh... how about that two-controllers-packed-in rumor?

I never thought "Playstation" was a bad name.  What do you do with games?  You play them.  So the system is the station that plays games.  I think it sounds fine.  But then I like most game system names.  Xbox is pretty much the only one I don't like because it sounds so generic and uncreative.

Xbox isn't a bad name though.  It's not a good one but it's not a bad one either.  I honestly can't think of any name prior to Wii that I considered bad as in it would have a damaging effect on the console's marketing.  Wii is actually a BAD name for a product.  It sounds like it will turn people off.  It sounds confusing.  It sounds awkward.  I've never heard a name so bad that upon hearing it I immediately predicted failure but this name is that bad.  No one who isn't a hardcore Nintendo nut or hardcore gamer is going to give this thing a chance unless Nintendo shows some game that is like holodeck good.

I'm reminded of Mick Foley's book where he talks about how when Steve Austin suggested playing a character that was cold blooded he was offered names from WWF writers like Chilly McFreeze and Baron Von Ruthless.  Mick said that Steve could have played the exact same character but with one of those names he would have bombed.  I agree completely.  That's what "Wii" is.  It's a name so dumb that regardless of what the product behind it is, it will bomb.

I'm speechless that there are people on this board prepared to defend Nintendo's decision to call their new console 'Piis'. It's categorically, an indefensibly bad decision. It's not like there are any other interpretations of the word than:
first person plural pronoun - fair enough
small, in a patronising sense - not good
  urine - bloody awful.

Someone should check Nintendo exec's portfolios prior to and after this announcement - I expect they were selling Nintendo shares short like they were going out of fashion. The whole thing is clearly some crazy scheme to make a quick buck as Nintendo goes noisly bust....

The point is that there are no other interpretations yet: Nintendo will make their own.

But and new interpretations introduced by Nintendo will have an enormous mountain to climb before they overcome the existing meanings. If I decide that 'butt' actually means 'table lamp', no marketing campagn on earth is going to convince people that it isn't also, and more importantly, a word for arse.

Who the hell needs to trademark that? no company is dumb enough to pick such a name for a product :P

There will be an explanation for Wii at E3, it has to be HUGE to turn the tide to Nintendo's favor.
