What's this? PSP games actually worth a damn?
« on: March 11, 2006, 08:52:07 PM »
I am speaking of Daxter and Syphon Filter Dark Mirror, which received a 9.0 and a 9.3 from IGN respectively. Penny Arcade  also gave a ringing endorsement of the Daxter demo. They both release on Tuesday. I simply don't like Jak and Daxter games, but IGN made Daxter sound like a simple, fun old school platformer, getting from point A to point B. I'm game for that. I was a fan of Syphon Filter in 1999, but not so much since then. I think the multiplayer alone is is the biggest enticement for me. However, it seems neither game suffers from anything on the usual laundry list of problems that PSP games encounter: Bad camera, terrible controls, awful load times, downgraded PS2 game, just a bad game, etc. Could it be that developers are finally starting to design games with the PSP's control scheme in mind?! THAT would be a miracle.

I'm gonna give em both a chance because I'm so sick and tired of my PSP being nothing more then a machine that enables me to catch up on missed episodes of Lost. I bought the thing for games, dammit, and in this regard the system has been an unbelievable disappointment to these eyes. Maybe March is the only month that good PSP games are released. And if they suck, I'll pick up Metroid Prime Hunters and Tetris DS next week and carry on with my life.

I'm interested in DJ MAX. It's a pretty hot IIDX/POP'n clone.

Both fulfill the "no new ideas" requirement for PSP games.

Daxter sounds like every generic platformer that you can already play for PS2 and Syphon Filter is Syphon Filter...

Great news for PSP owners... between these and Lumines, pretty soon you won't be able to count all the games worth having on their system with a single hand.

The only game that could make me buy a PSP (*gasps*) may be Valkyrie Profile Lenneth. This is one dang good action RPG.
The new DBZ looked like Budokai Tenkaichi but after watching the video review on Gamespot, it's actually closer to the DBZ Budokai series, which isn't that good.
No really interesting games out there for that system...

That chocobot game looks kind of neat, in a pikmin-lemmings-derivative kinda way.

BTW, one of the game's developers told me that they use streaming and that it doesn't impact the battery life that much, what hurts it is the spinup. Why other games don't leave the disc spinning then I don't know (nor do I know why movie playback kills the battery life since it doesn't do much more).

EDIT: I think I should mention that I'm talking about Daxter, no idea what Syphon Filter does.
