last minute rev predicts! go! go! go!
« on: September 12, 2005, 09:09:46 PM »
Less than 3 days til IWATATON......then, after Iwata doesn't reveal any new info, only two more months until REVOTON1!

So, this is your last chance to guess. What's in and what's out?
Person who gets the most right wins a frookie.
Bonus points for coming up with a good controller mockup.

Here's my predictions:

IN
-controller that plugs directly into TV for some applications
-controller that splits in 2.
-gyro (or other device for reading movement) in ONE of the 2 controller halves.
-3-D!
-advanced feedback (maybe haptic feedback, or air that blows on your hands....I have no idea.)
-touch-sensitive technology in some form

OUT
-trackball
-scrollwheel
-hot/cold output
-traditional SNES button layout
-reconfigurable button layout/wholly virtual buttons
-dual gyro setup
-dual screen setup

It's like a cookie. A fruit-juice sweetened, horribly undelicious cookie.

No, no, I love newtons too. It's hard to imagine the extent of the undeliciousness of frookies without actually having tasted one.

In:
Gyroscopics of some sort (even if it's not very advanced and will only be usefull for monkey-ball like games)
Trackball
Microphone and seperate headset jack

Out:
Touch screen
Nintendo On or anything similar
Reconfigurable buttons

Undecided:
Splitable controller and anything else I didn't cover

Alright, here's my GUESSES. =P

The screen we view the games on wont be on the TV, TV is optional, holograms maybe? Projection? Dunno, something similar. This will allow a fantastic way to play multiplayer because everyone can have their own screen and they can put it wherever they want at whatever size they want. Controller? No idea. I'm still holding on to my "light gun" theory where it controls like a touch screen but you dont have to touch it, just point at it. Logically i've come to the conclusion that that CAN'T be it, but it's the best guess I have. =D

Games? We'll see a SSB trailer first, demos of a racing game (either Wave Race, F-Zero, Mario Kart or something else/new), Super Mairo game, Miyamoto's new game which will be the star launch title that defines the Revolution, Wario Ware Rev, Metroid and maybe (hopefully) Pikmin. Third Party games including a brand new Sega game like Feel the Magic/Project Rub was for the DS, something from Capcom, possibly just RE5 but maybe something else as well or instead. An exclusive Tales game from Namco. A huge mature game from a talented third party developer in collaboration with Nintendo will also be present, all fronts will be covered.

The actual Revolution itself will be a box of internet, no connection necessary, it IS the internet. So it can also be used as a free hotspot for the DS!

Metroid will be the graphical showcase and people will say "wow".

In: Gyroscopics

Out: Touchscreen

In: The Rev will be technically "inferior" in terms of power to it's competitiors but be able to crank out more juice than anyone wuold have believed. Just like the GCN.

Out: The Rev will only be a few times more powerful than the cube.

In: Mario is going to KICKS ASS this time as Shigy is talking about it like he did SM64. What with the remarks about the controller being designed around the game.

Out: Mario being out by Rev launch.

In: Outies

Out: Innies

In: side

Out: doors

In: Guys with little weinies

Out: Guys with big ones

In: Nintendo's advertising will be the same as ever. Possible even MORE lame in the future

Out: It won't matter. We're buying the Rev anyway. And I mean just that. The notion that Nintendo fans are going to keep going back to the well is an outdated notion. Sure most of us will, but Nintendo can't afford to keep losing all these customers due to "image" problems.

Controller:
~ Similar in shape and design to the Wavebird, but stream-lined to be more attractive to the casual gamer
~ Gyros, Haptic-feedback, "Grip buttons," Built-in mic
~ Wired + Wireless flavors

System:
~ Smaller in size (as promised by Iwata at E3)
~ Special hardware graphical techniques a la cube-mapping, etc... (quote in my sig)

Games:
~ Trailers of Mario 128, SSB3, Metroid Prime 3 for sure, and MAYBE Miyamoto's new IP and a reel of 3rd party software...
~ Sonic and RE5 finally confirmed for the system, Sega most likely to first reveal new IP on Rev...Konami, Zoonami, Clover Studio confirm Rev projects in development...

My prediction is a mouse of some sort.  Either the console comes with a seperate mouse or it has a touch pad or trackball or something.  I also figure they'll have some sort of expansion slot on the controller like the N64 had for things like tilt sensor packs and stuff like that.  There will be six face buttons, two analog sticks, a d-pad, and at least two shoulder buttons.  It has to play all the previous games after all and I don't buy any of this "just use the Cube controller" crap.  Plus you can't play N64 games on a Cube controller anyway.  There's not enough buttons.

What's out is easier because there are so many stupid theories.

Out:
Motion control as a replacement for the analog stick.
Touchscreen.
Glasses or goggles.
Holigraphic display (why doesn't anyone think this is possible).
Tactile touchscreens.
Squeezy handles.
Split controller.  This is such a dumb idea, there's no way they'll do this.

I'm also predicting that there will be some sort of annoying flaw.  The d-pad will be too small again or you won't be able to recharge the controller while playing it or something like that.  Nintendo always has some little problem.

Graphically I think the hardware will be quite impressive but Nintendo will show some low poly Mario trailer that will create a lousy first impression.  The classic downloads will initially be overpriced and Nintendo will limit the selection to titles everyone already owns like Super Mario Bros.  However they'll fix this very quickly when everyone tears them a new one because of it.

There will also be some feature that is hidden, that won't be revealed until a few months before launch.  It will be incredibly minor like clicky analog sticks which Nintendo will say they invented.

With gyros, how could that possibly be a stupid idea?

"With gyros, how could that possibly be a stupid idea?"

It's too damn complicated.  Nintendo says they want to make things easier for people to adapt to.  Having two halves (and thus creating a previously unthinkable problem of losing part of a controller) is going to scare people away more than pretty much anything.  Longtime gamers will probably be wary of it let alone newcombers.

Do you really want to wave your arms everywhere to execute something that in the past was a simple button press?  Physical fatigue is something you normally avoid by playing games.
