Playing "standard DVD media" could be referring to movie playback. The game discs themselves could still be proprietary somehow (like the setup in the Panasonic Q). Frankly there's no way Nintendo would do it otherwise. They'll definitely protect their games somehow.

a. The games could be second layer-only again, this time with a 4.7GB capacity.

b. Or maybe they'll enable two layers, and use a bar code again or some form of encryption.

I think this news means we're going to see it. They wouldn't discuss the appearance if they weren't ready to show it, would they?

I think this news just means Nintendo's finalized a design for the Revolution.

Which means it's actually further along than I thought it would be.

It will play standard DVD media, that doesnt mean it wont have a Blue-Ray HD-DVD hybrid drive in it. A Blue-Ray HD-DVD hybrid drive will be backwards compatible with standard DVD media.

From this statement we know that at the very least revolution will play standard DVD media. From this one could make the assumption you will be able to play DVD movies from it as well.

If Nintendo was the only one going with DVD I'd be concerned. They stuck with cartridges too long and then went with a smaller optical disc format than the competition. It seemed like they were always one step behind regarding game media. At least now they're on par with one competitor so at the very least we don't have to worry about getting wanged on 360 ports. It wasn't that big of a deal on the Cube though anyway so it's not that big of a deal here.

Though I am concerned about piracy. That was Nintendo's big advantage with the Cube. DVD burners are pretty common now. There's one of the PC I'm using right now and I don't have a super fancy machine. Piracy could hurt Nintendo precious profitablity and without that and without market share they would be sunk. But maybe that's the point. Perhaps they feel it's important to risk some of their profits for a greater market share.

I also wonder if the Rev will play DVD movies. I don't care either way but it already has the technology in it and it would silly to not include the feature in some way, even if was extra like with the Xbox. There are people who feel the feature would be important so they might as well include it to shut them up. Why lose a few sales for no reason?

I like the size of the Rev. It sounds small and portable like the Cube but because of the horizontal design it doesn't sound like it looks like a toy. "Very, very sleek" is not what I would describe the Cube's appearance as so at the very least it looks like Nintendo has learned something.

Btw. A poster at GA Forums, who supposidly has insider info suggested days before that it would be 1.Very sleak. 2.Look like the Mac Mini...

so he was right.... he also suggested that we will see ALOT of the Revolution at E3, ALOT of Third Parties are on board and i think that Nintendo wants Western Support, Talk of an ID Software FPS At launch...

So who knows... I definetly cant wait...

Surely Nintendo will have piracy measures in place. If there is GameCube compatibility already built-in, it could very well borrow the same method.

so who else is totally amazed by the awesome timing of this!? first everyone gets dissapointed of the 360, then they came out with this? This is such a weird position for me right now, when I came to the thread I expect to actually have to defend Nintendo for going with DVD instead of the HD-DVD Blue ray thing... maybe Im already used to have to defend my beloved Ninty everywhere including fan forums?

So long as it plays high-def, I'm not too worried. What's this "new class" though? Hopefully they're referring to HD vs. non-HD and not Inferior-Nintendo-HD Vs. HD.

I like the wireless controller too... give me a wavebird with rumble type of controller and I'll be ecstatic.

how did the Panasonic Q work? exactly did it have two disk drives? Ive never seen one in person.

I think that the GC disks are just mini-DVDs, its the same technology with smaller media

There's word that Kaplan was misquoted on the media...She may have said "DVD-sized media" (as opposed to GC GOD-disc-sized media)

The panasonic Q had one disk drive, and its laser could read both DVD's and gamecube optical disks (proprietry format made by nintendo)

If thats the case i couldnt see why the revolution couldnt do something similar.

To the consumer (unless you are a pirate), revolution media really shouldnt matter. Nintendo may have found a way to beef up the gamecube optical disks capacity and use that for revolution.

The only people who are going to whinge bitch and moan about that are developers like Square-Enix who use alot of FMV and dont want their games to span multiple disks.
