Blollin' at this comment from someone at the MTV unveiling:

Quote

Eight games were shown -- seven viewable, one playable. Perfect Dark Zero was the only playable title, and it was underwhelming, looking early, dark, and chugging at under 20 FPS

IGNxbox are all over this, so hit them up if you want to see more.
Side note: its basically what all the rumours have been like. No real suprises apart from that comment above.

I guess this is what Nintendo means when they said beefed up graphics weren't going to be enough. I'm all for high-def games, but bringing current high-end PC-quality graphics to the TV really isn't impressive anymore.

Funny, usually when Nintendo downplays the competition, they're stretching a little (they publically berated DVD playback at first). But they seem to be right this time.

Way better indeed. A little heavy on the technobabble, but as a whole it exudes "fun" over "flash". If I had saw that BEFORE the MTV presentation I would have been probably more optimistic about the 360. But still, going off of that and everything else I learned today I'm still not buying into it.

About Gears of War...

Isn't this the same game that appeared in IGN's article about SK using the Unreal Engine 3?  Looking at the Gears of War screens a couple posts above, I can't readily accept those as 360 screenshots given what we've seen from Doa4, Ghost Recon, and Ninety-nine Nights, Full Auto, Kameo, and Condemned (i'll disregard PerfectDumpZero for now).

from the SK article
I think this is running off the Unreal Engine 3, tooled for PC (since Gears of War is also in-dev for PC), and not necessarily 360.

Man, PDZero looks like ass.  Kameo could have been done on the Cube.

HD revolution my ass.

The controller is just an improved version of current generation controllers.  Why are they not thinking about doing something original and inspirational.  At least as an option.  They don't even have one track ball or scroll wheel.  The shoulder buttons can not be used comfortably along with the triggers at the same time (the digital buttons should have been scroll wheels and there should have been a set of middle finger digital buttons beneath the triggers so that all functions could be used at maximum efficiency).  Why in god's name do they need a dpad for next generation games?

I hope Nintendo's controller takes a crap all over the Xbox360's controller.

Is anyone here going to pay $360 for "better graphics" and more potential power not shown in games for two years.  Seventy dollar games?  Standard LIVE support?  Non standard harddrive?  We havn't even seen the best looking games of current generation hardware yet.  What about Collosus on PS2, Zelda on Cube, Conker on Xbox?  MS is abandoning their current fanbase looking to claim the gamers they failed to reach with the first Xbox, the PS2 gamers.  MS must feel it is the right time to intice them, but I think it will all prove too early and rushed, and E3 will show to be a microcosm of how this next war will play out.  MS shows their goods days before E3 and then E3 arrives and Nintendo and Sony cover MS up like cat poop in the litter box.  Did MS name this console after the outrageous price the early launch will cause or the $360 million dollars they obviously wasted on RARE.  PDZero has been in development for like five years on three consoles and it looks soulless.  It makes Dark Sector on the PS3 look great.

An oppinion from an EA guy over here:

Quote

The really dumb thing about this is, I still don't really know what the true capabilities of the hardware are. Because most of the stuff shown here is bullshit.

*Most* of the imagery here is from software that's allready in development for the PC, and will be convenient to port to 360, and the remainder is lies. Like the Madden video, or this 'shot' from PGR3

So there's in my humble opinion very little here that is is media truly taken from 360 hardware.

Even If some of it is genuinely 360 software, most of it is dull as dishwater. I'm so disheartened by this industry right now.

Wow.. i'm speechless after reading that. Even someone from EA is sick of the direction the industry is heading, this is good news for Revolution, if it is infact a breathe of fresh air, every developer in the world would want to develop games for it.

You know what I think is hilarious? Starfox Adventures looks better than Perfect Dark Zero.

"The controller is just an improved version of current generation controllers."

That's good.  Controllers are supposed to be function not original.  MS saw what worked with the Xbox controller and changed a few thing to try to improve it.  Having a d-pad is good because digital control is not inferior to analog control.  It's just a different way to play.  And what do you need scrollwheels and junk for?

Adding new options is good but removing existing ones is bad.  If the d-pad is gone I don't care what's added instead, the controller is junk because it can't play older style games.  It's inflexible and thus is worthless as a controller.  In order for Nintendo's controller to take a crap on the 360 controller it has to have what the 360 has plus more.  If it's just different it won't be better.  In fact it could be worse if it's too different.

I know where you're coming from with the functionality issue, but it is seperate from the reason they kept the basic design of the SNES controller.  A more advanced controller can do nothing but be more functional than present designs.  For example, even if they kept the traditional face buttons and dpad, didn't make the "360 button" a track ball with digital clicking, and didn't make middle finger buttons so we could use the shoulder functions for without having to use our middle fingers on the trigger for anymore than a second.  Even if they did all that and just added a scroll wheel with a digital clicking either above the trigger on each side or between the middle finger button and the trigger like a traditionally positioned mouse wheel.  It would make gaming much more fluid.  The options opened by having two extra shoulder buttons that can scroll are many.  You can scroll through menus deciding what weapon you want before clicking on it.  You can rotate the camera with on button.  They could be made double functioning using the clicking in other games.  If the wheels where big enough you could just combine the trigger with the wheel so there are fewer buttons to keep up with.

A trackball offers the option for mouse control.  It is basically the same control you would get from using a real gyro inside of a controller or helmet.  You wouldn't have to manually move the ball inside the device because uses its technology to glide along inside the confines of the gear.  A track ball requires you to operate it with you thumb.  It would be best if MS at least offered one option to compete with what Nintendo's controller might do.

Nintendo might use up to three gyros, or haptics, or gyros and haptics.  They may put a track ball with digital clicking on each side of the controller.  There are plenty of innovations that can be made to the controller.  MS just is not thinking, or their just thinking like Sony.

Also, I like that even the people EA are tired of where things are going.

And PDZero should be better looking for a game that has been in development for five years.

I really think people are overacting about the PDZero graphics.  Most likely these are place holder graphics put in an unfinished game.  Perfect Dark will be have better graphics, but right now Microsoft just needs a really fun game to demo at E3 that says.  We have your next Halo fix right here, and it will rock your world.

I do agree with Nemo that with each generation you really need to try and advance the controller.  Specially when you aren't providing a graphical step like the 3D generation did.  A controller advancement would allow games to feel new and special again for your system.

"Can they fix the graphics in 3 months?"

Possibly.  Halo was reportedly a huge disappointment at E3 2001.  I think it had a really crappy frame rate.  But Bungie busted their ass and delivered one the most popular games for this generation.  At E3 2001 I thought the Xbox had no chance but they really turned things around in time for launch so you never know.

Though I don't think Rare is the kind of company to both get something ready for launch AND fix it up.  They've got the talent but they lack the efficiency.

Rumor has it that MS doesn't have full development kits out yet, and most sdk's only have two processors.

most of the games displayed for Xbox 360 were actually running from the PC build of the game

and PD0 was running off of an incomplete SDK w/ only 2 processors (possibly G5's) & thats why it was only running @ 15fps

Makes you wonder why they even bothered if they didn't really have anything to show.......

If PD0 is currently running with restrictions, and has been in-dev for 3 consoles, fine.

But Kameo has been in-dev for a comparable period and it doesn't seem to make a significant visual jump either.

Microsoft admits to using G5 Macs to run demos

News.com

The nifty clips of video games supporting Microsoft's new Xbox 360 console are running on Apple machines, Microsoft confirmed on Friday.

"We purchased a number of Apple G5's because very specific hardware components of the G5 allow developers to emulate some of the technology behind future Xbox products and services," a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement. "This is an interim development tool that will be replaced with a more powerful and comprehensive solution later."

The current systems shown at product introductions are prototypes. Final systems are expected to come out in all three major regions--North America, Europe and Asia--by the end of the year.

I beleive that it was also rumored that MS stated that if the devs could get their demo's running @ 15-20 fps it should run on Xbox 360 @ 60fps w/ no problems.

I knew it. This coupled with the 2/3 processors and generic ATI card thing mean that PD0 will be a whole lot more impressive graphically.

Artistically, though... Rare better get its ass in gear.

And there's always the question of: why the hell did MS use such asinine timing? Are they really that desperate to get to the party before Sony and Nintendo that they show up without any pants on? Stupid, stupid, stupid.
