Microphone
« on: February 24, 2005, 12:45:57 PM »
What I have always wanted in some video games is soem verbal interaction with characters. I have played games like shenmue. Which actually had a pretty good system. You talk to someone nad are given the choice of different topics to start a conversation with. However, I want more. Imagine if you were talking to a character using a microphone ismilarly to how the seaman works. You talk to any character and using some voice recognition and artificial intelligence routine it affects the game. The character may talk back to you if he has some knowledge on the subject and inform you to more details. Some characters may know mroe hten other characters. If a character is in knowlegable then he will either say he doesnt know or refer you to a more expert character.

I'm hoping that Nintendo chooses a pretty big media format so that there can be alot of audio. Of course my expert/non expert idea would minimize the need for too many voices. For instance a character may ignore you completly and tell you to go away until someone refers you to them. At that point their use will be to tel l you specific details and they will server their purpose. This way you wont have to make every character say certain things........

Also, i would like to have it so thjat if you tell a character to follow you orif you bark out orders they may perhaps respond accordingly to the context. Which would be really cool.

This could work for a pokemon game, the detective noir game i was talkign about, some rpgs, etc....

so what are your ideas?

The problem is the more choices and more audio you include, the more it has to be translated...Look at Animal Crossing...It took almost a year to get it fully translated, and still you could see times where there were repetitive answers given by NPCs... ;_;

I like the idea in theory but the problem is that it's so complicated and the insane amount of work it would require just doesn't seem worth it to me.  Plus I hate voice command stuff.  My voice is too weird for these things to ever work with me worth crap.  Plus there's the problem of being able to say almost anything.  That makes it harder to "guess" what you're supposed to say to progress in the game.

Though I would like some more effort at randomizing things.  It would be cool to randomize a village a bit for example so that while there is always a short fat guy in the village his role is different each time you play and his clothing and hair colour are random.  I'd also like to see more options for what you can say to someone instead of just clicking on them and them saying the same thing every time.  I think Majora's Mask really nailed the concept of NPCs by having them have a select path of actions so that in different context they said and did different things.  For starters have NPCs DO STUFF instead of just standing in their room telling everyone who breaks into their house how their village is famous for its strawberries.  Just simple stuff like them sweeping or reading or something would make things seem more real and alive.

Oh and since Perm pimped his own neglected post I'd like to remind everyone I have two new songs in the "original compositions" thread in general chat.

This is a nice idea... but having better media format would allow for simpler things. Take GTA 3 for example... alot of the people on the streets wear the same exact clothes... with HD DVD, Blue Ray this wouldnt happen...

i would like the mic to be packaged with the next console, but it is up to the developers to actually use it.  i don't want to shout comands like jump and duck to control the character, but i'm sure someone somewhere is already planning that gimmick.  what i want to see is the ability to engage in conversation to exstract knowledge from in game characters without pressing a button or scrolling through bubbles of text.  when i want to talk to a character i should be able to speak into the mic and say, "hey."  i want to be able to say almost anything and cause any number of reactions from in game characters.  it is all a game of cause and affect whether you are hitting someone up side the head or hearing their confession at death.  i want to speak in Link's voice, and i want real consequences and rewards for how well i communicate to in game characters.  some characters may respond better to threats while others may reveal their secrets when asked politely.  if publishers won't take the financial risks to create these kinds of games then gamers are doomed for another generation of corporate gaming from Tony Hawk and John Madden.

I don't know about voice interaction...it's never been that useful or fun for that matter. Talking to a real person is a thousand times better than talking to a computer; so just leave it at that. I don't see communication games becoming huge. Unless, your playing Animal Crossing REV and certian characters have a real human counterpart. So you could chat in real time like an MMORPG. The rest are just the same as they were on the gamecube.

Also Ian was right, MM did great with NPC interaction. Also, I see your point about not having NPC's tell you useless/pointless information all the time, but how are you soppose to gather clues. I think the best comprimise between NPC interaction are riddles and such. I loved in WW when you had to take a picture of the full moon to be able to talk to that really sad creepy guy. Things of that nature...

Another good point...I think NPC interaction can be taking beyond "General information #36". It not only makes the game more realistic, but it also brings you into the game. Again, I think Majora's mask had that. By hunting down all the masks, you had to do alot of NPC interaction.

I argue that a microphone would detatch you from the game in a way.  Or at least break the illusion.  WHY?  because many of us would hear our voice, and it would not have the inflection of an actor- it would be flat and monotonous.  Hearing our own voice would break the illusion of the game.  When we choose a preselected text- or read preset text (as boring as this may seem to some) we imagine the words sounding a certain way- the way we each want that charactor to sound- if the character sounds like ME, that is odd.

I disagree. The main character should BE me. If he has the same voice, that's only natural.

I think that's why I love Zelda and Metroid so much... because the main character is an empty vessel I can fit inside.

i am in favor of this idea. i think it would work perfectly for a firstperson (really?) rev zelda game. say you are given choices of what to say, and you read the sentance outloud to move forward. you are not creating your own diologue. you are still following the story. this would be more immersive if the other characters of the game have voices and text to read. it would be ever more revolutionary if developers gave you the option of turning voice control on/off.

if anyone has doubts on how well voice recognition works, use window xp's voice recognition training wizard.
Mac OS X also has voice control options.

Sorry....the post that was here was wrong thread!!! See the game idea thread

I think this is the best direction for voice in Zelda:

I would not want any players actually talking while playing Zelda except to maybe give commands like "Sit", "Stay", "Open Sesame" or maybe even to sing Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do style to trigger doors and magical effects, like putting fire on your arrow before you release it, or to call animals to your aid.
Developers, we should want gamers 2 fall in love with THEIR gaming experiences, not OUR feature lists. Let's not forget we're gamers too. But don't get stuck in your own dreams. What'd be special about dreams if we're all forced 2 dream the same thing? MODE RED
