Though I do have to say that the disparity between Number 1 and Number 10 being 485,586 units doesn't bode to well for the market in general.  I now that is because FFIII is very anticipated but also note that there is a huge gap between 2 and 10.  Personally I would feel better as a company if most of my top ten were a little closer grouped, towards the high end.  Also why don't they just import American and European DS?

It's not that huge. You can hardly expect that many games to sell that many copies.

Oh yeah? You should see the PSP numbers. Remember Gundam for the PSP? The game that knocked NSMB out of the #1 spot? Uh-huh.

As a developer though a rather see an eclectic group of games selling near each other at the top and not so much brand loyalty.  It means I have a chance.

Nintendo just can't win can they? Now that they have the user base, they're selling too many games at the same time with too varied numbers? Geez.

Anyways, it's not brand loyalty that's selling these games. It's concept.

Cookbook. (DS Navi Cooking)
Learn a new language. (English Training)
Minigames. (Tamagotchi)
Pachinko (PS2 Pachislot game at #11 and another Pachinko game at #14)

NO ONE COMPANY owns a patent on any of these new and emergent themes. As a developer, this should be a very exciting time because entirely new untapped markets are opening up with the DS and, unlike the stale past handheld market, there are new game types just waiting to be discovered, staked out, and mined for profits. It's a new gold rush!

Of course a game on its 11th week isn't going to sell as much as an anticipated game on its first week.

The black DSL came out today in Japan. People were, per usual, lined up around the block.

Could the DSL increase AGAIN next week?

I can't help but wonder if any system has ever before swept the charts in Japan.

PS2 didn't, apparently. Does anyone know if Sega Saturn, Super Famicom, PC Engine, or Famicom did? I seriously doubt anything but the market-leading console could.

In case you didn't know, Saturn killed Playstation in Japan. Although post-1997, Sony's hardware outsold Sega's, it wasn't until much later that Saturn's software wasn't convincingly on top.

Further proof.. they just have better taste.

I missed out on the FFIII limited edition DS lite ($340-$350 on play-asia and yesasia >< I have my eye on the Pokemon and Winning Eleven DS lites.... of course they'll probably cost the same or even higher for the Pokemon one, even though they only retail in Japan for about $145-$200 ><

Yes, they did. They killed it even though it could have been the thing. They did the same with Dreamcast, later, to a lesser extent.

That doesn't make Playstation better than Saturn. Sega Saturn is a much, much, much better system than is Sony Playstation.

Just like Nintendo DS is greater than Sony Playstation Portable.

In other news, Final Fantasy III looks fantastic and I think it'll sell units in the United States too.

The Saturn was a complete piece of crap, as far as hardware goes. It had some decent games, but every cross-platform game was either equal or better on the PlayStation. If Sega made PSX games, and never made the Saturn, then the PSX would have been the ultimate "32 bit" system. Sega did a good job with 3D (think Star Fox for SNES, or S.T.U.N. Runner in the arcades) on the Saturn, I'll admit, but any game that used those things...what are they called...oh yeah, polygons, looked and played better on the PSX. Sorry to hate on the Saturn - it did have many great games, don't get me wrong, but the hardware simply sucked.

The Saturn was garbage with 3D. Originally it was designed as the "Ultimate" 2D system. When the PSX was unveiled to contain 3D, sega started a crash program to bring 3D to the Saturn. It resulted in the addition of a 2nd 2D GFX chip running in parralle to give it enough power to do 3D.

It resulted in a crime against nature. With 2 chips that were designed for 2D, squezzing enough power out of them for 3D was a complete nightmare. Even maxed out it could not hope to match vertex to vertex to what the PSX could do.

But it did produce some really nice 2D games and managed some noteable 3D ones.

Apparently there's reports of FFIII not being restocked (at least soon) because Nintendo is focusing on manufacturing Pokemon moreso (iirc, probably have it wrong in some way). This would be really bad for FFIII I think, because I doubt it could reach 1mil then. I'd love to be wrong.

Wouldn't Square-Enix be handling FF3 production?

Shortages will be the downfall of Nintendo. It's almost been a year now, and they haven't done anything.

Yeah, really. I don't see how Pokemon could affect FFIII at all.

And expect gangbuster numbers in system sales this week, the Onyx sold out.

that's still regarded as rumor, and the Satrun was very capable of 3D graphics.....sure, it was hard as hell to program for, but done well, you'd get some impressive results (VF2 and unreleased Shenmue come to mind)

and the most I could find regarding Saturn software sales, was that VF2 was the top selling game in Japan (and worldwide)

Ya but you'd need demoscene-level coding to get that done and at that level you'd spend five years working on something as complex as Mario 64.

Wrong, and a common misconception.

The Saturn's hardware had 2 CPUs, and 6 other processors. It was designed from the ground up for 3-D, although it had impressive 2-D abilities as well. The thing is that it was easy to program 2D whereas 3D was difficult, hence the terrible Saturn Virtua Fighter.  However, as demonstrated by Virtua Fighter 2, 3D was very feasible on the system and it could go head-to-head (and above and beyond) with Playstation if the dev was talented enough. Yu Suzuki, for example, programmed the Saturn version of Shenmue. Show me any PSone game that uses rendered 3D that looks as good, or any 3DO game or any 32-bit game for that matter. Tecmo's whateverhisfirstnameis Itagaki, who was an excellent developer, said he himself would program for Saturn over Playstation to this day.
