New colours typically boost sales, so the DS Lite should also boost sales too.

Meanwhile, DS sales will drop massively right now before it hits while everyone waits for it, which means the PSP may retain it's lead, then from that get momentum and then that's it for Nintendo. Also, they can say GOODBYE to third party support now, I think Resident Evil DS has become the lowest selling new Resident Evil title of all time.

So it would seem, but I was too busy noticing that every other game on the list is for the DS except Strikers (which I was also happy to see)....

I really think the Lite was a bad idea. They should release it when DS sales start to slow down. DS is selling fine at the moment.

well, well, look whos back...

anyway this re-design is more to reel in the fence sitters that have been waiting(such as myself) and also as an early Revolution tie-in promotion. We all know that the DS is going to play atleast a small part into the Rev connectability(is that a word?), so what better way to make it known than to make them look alike?

According to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, the company is confident that the DS will continue to sell well as 2006 unfolds. Speaking to the Japanese press, Iwata said: "Taken as a whole with the current version, we're aiming at total domestic sales of 10,000,000 units not too late in the year."

Basically Nintendo expects DS to sell an average of over 100,000 systems a week in the slow period of the year, which would be absolutely phenomenal, it's on track to outsell PS2 and if Nintendo gives it a good lifespan it could become the highest selling system of all time.

I hope some of this Japanese domination will translate into improved sales in North America.
I think they could have waited a little longer for a redesign, too, but it may be a good strategy now considering the PSP is winning in North America.  I wonder if the redesign was being pushed by NOA?
That's my opinion, not yours.

It means more japanese third party support which means more games. That should translate into more western sales.

Despite idiotic analysis stating otherwise, I really think this year will see the DS conclusively pull ahead in North America. With the DSLIte, the sexiness factor will be gone. The GBA will also finally get retired, and those sales should translate at least 50%-75% into DS sales. The reason the PSP has held up against the DS here is because the GBA hasn't been officially replace. This year should see that happen, and that'll spell the end of the PSP's competitive streak.

"But if they phase out the GBA, newcomers who buy a DS wont have any multiplayer capabilities."

I doubt there are any DS owners that specifically went out and bought a GBA JUST to play multiplayer.  Anyone who cares probably already has a GBA or is knowledgable enough with gaming to know the GBA is on it's last legs.  The sort of people who are totally oblivious to the fact that the GBA is on the way out and are incapable of tracking down a used system years from now don't even KNOW about the multiplayer issue.

Media Create 23 Jan - 29 Jan

01 PS2 Final Fantasy 7 DC - 392,000 / 392,000
02 NDS English Training DS - 242,000 / 242,000
03 PS2 Shin Onimusha - 226,000 / 226,000
04 NDS Adult DS Training 2 - 111,000 / 1,057,000
05 NDS Animal Crossing WW - 80,000 / 1,724,000
06 NDS Adult DS Training - 71,000 / 1,441,000
07 PS2 Ar Tonelico - 54,000 / 54,000
08 NDS Bleach DS - 36,000 / 36,000
09 NDS Mario Kart DS - 29,000 / 1,058,000
10 PS2 Winning Eleven 9 Bonus Pack - 28,000 / 28,000

If even some lame FF7 knock off can destroy every DS game released, Nintendo doesn't have a chance when the BIG PSP and PS2 games hit. Nintendo has been lucky the past few months, Sony has been asleep, but now the DS has died down massively and PS2 is coming back. This means PSP isn't too far behind, PS2 has the momentum now and Sony are going to no doubt shift that PS2 momentum to the PSP. With Bleach flopping and English Training doing well it's clear nobody new is buying a DS, the userbase should stay exactly how it is for a long time. I also predict the PSP outsold the DS in hardware this week since anyone wanting a DS will wait for the DS Lite, and by the time the DS Lite hits stores that list will be completely PS2 and PSP following current trends, things aren't looking good for Iwata and co. right now.

Could that frigging DS English training pass a million too!? Almost a quarter of the way there in 6 days is crazy for a game with like three other counterparts. Wow, talk about a runaway!

Not to mention it took less than 6 months to make and probably had a cheaper budget than the price of an Xbox 360.

Those bastards at Nintendo! They're milking the Brain Training franchise for all it's worth.. soon NO ONE will buy it, and the DS will come crashing to a halt.

no hardware numbers yet? I wonder of the DS lite announcement made an impact on unit sales.
