Wow, to think that the world has spent tens of billions of dollars on Just the DS console itself, the money spent on software must be mind blowing.

Anyone taking bets for 150Million before Nintendo retires the DS?

I had forgotten that DS sales didn't really take off until the DS Lite was released.  Check out the graph if the sales rate had stayed the same after the first year.



Nintendo would have sold only half of the number of units.  That's a bit eye-opening.  Granted, the increase in sales can't be entirely attributed to the DSL, but it certainly helped.

But DS sales have taken a very noticeable drop over the last few weeks (in JPN).
PSP is beating the DSL+DSi combined right now & has been for the last 2-3 weeks.
What is the cause for the drop? saturation of the japanese market?

PSP & PS3 are out selling Nintendo DS & Wii right now, collectively & individually.
Why do you think that is?

If I remember right though, PS2 has 145-148million sold.
Do you really think DS will last another 2 years at the current sales rate to actually beat that before it gets phased out by the DS successor?

Even if the PSP manages to outsell the DS for a straight year it won't harm it. First, the DS is millions of units ahead of the PSP. Even if its a top seller it would take years for the PSP to surpass the DS. Second, despite some big sellers there are barely any games on the best sellers list. Finally, Dragon Quest IX. ON DS.

So there's nothing to worry about. Hell, the real competition is between Wii and PS3 and they are still ahead of Sony.

If for some reason nobody had ever sold their DS systems, I wonder how much higher DS sales would have been...

Speaking at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan, Iwata claimed that the DSi had sold evenly across both regions; 300,000 units in the US, 300,000 in Europe, all during the handheld’s launch weekend.

Joining Iwata at the Correspondents' Club was Mr Miyamoto, who spoke again of plans to turn the DSL and DSi into useful tools for school teachers. The handhelds will be used to conduct customised tests for pupils, he claimed.

Miyamoto also wants the DS to provide local maps, tour guidance, virtual coupons and other such tools. "Convenience in life will be enhanced by having a DS," Miyamoto said.

Are you sure that list is accurate?  I thought DQ V outsold DQ IV by quite a bit.  Also, where's FF IV?  I thought that sold like gang-busters in Japan?

According to Square Enix themselves, they have sold 610K copies of Final Fantasy IV in Japan as of December 31, 2008 and a total of 1.08 million worldwide.

The Dragon Quest V number is a off by a little, it's at 1,228,014 in Japan and Dragon Quest IV is at 1.19 million. Famitsu numbers are usually off (either a little higher or a little lower). Media Create is more reliable, Famitsu is only used because they release data for more games.
