know, and so does everyone else here, that the DS games are great, but i can't help but think is that really the pushing factor? The DS phat didn't sell nearly this well. was it all just because of the looks, or did people really hold out that long for a lite?
Before May, we were all puzzled about how North America was the only market that hadn't embraced the DS. Here, it was always neck and neck with the PSP, even though it had a much better game library. I found it hard to believe that the DS was not pulling ahead, especially since so many of the franchises which had sold the GBA had been translated successfully to the DS, with better results many times. Even last autumn when all those great games (including Mario Kart DS) came out, there wasn't much of a difference.

I think it was New Super Mario Bros and the DS Lite which did it - since then there is clear separation in the North American market.

Well, US customers were still getting used to the DS when the phat was still selling. I mean, there wasn't a insignificant number of people who slighted the DS for it's 'stupid' two screens, lack of built in multimedia, and 'last gen' graphics. The jury was still out, so to say, on the DS until the launch of the DS lite. I'm sure the awesome LCDs, smaller size, and very slick looks of the DSL spurred adoption too.

Can't say i'm disappointed that everyone has warmed up to the DS

3D and HD are nice, but I still really enjoy low-def 2D games a lot too.

The GBA was also hurting the DS in North America. Less so now, but still some.

Yea. $80 for a GBA is really pretty good if you can't afford a DS. And while AAA titles are pretty well not being released for it anymore, it still has lots existing AAA titles and, of course, can play all GB and GBC games.

It's pretty amazing though, 600,000+ units in November... the SP sells little over 4,000 units in a month in Japan on average.

Could the GBA even have one more holiday season in it after this one?

Yes, GBA has one more holiday left in it.  The sales will be a lot lower, but it'll still be going.

I think New Super Mario Bros was a big deal for North America.  My cousin's boyfriend couldn't stop playing it when we were hanging out at my grandparents' place this summer.  It sold him on the DS.  I have a feeling that we're also seeing the sum of many important games like Animal Crossing, Nintendogs, Brain Training, Mario Kart, Tetris and Metroid adding up.  It's possible that DS Lite took off not just because it was nicer than DS, but also because people were already interested but heard a new version was coming out, so they waited.

Some life to date sales for Brain Training, Animal Crossing and Tetris would be really interesting.  I know Nintendogs is huge, and I can assume the Mario games have done well, but I wonder about those ones?
That's my opinion, not yours.

GBA not having a major holiday next year will likely be due to production slashes.

Nintendo should have stopped production on GBA a while back and slashed the price of DS/DSLite a little to spur more sales.  GBA sales are eating into DS sales.

GB and GBA never sold this fast in any incarnation.  I know between the GB/GBL (Japan only)/GBC, their total hardware sales were over 100million.  The GBA is somewhere around 80 or 90 million (these are all worldwide numbers), but DS is selling faster than anything ever, including the PS2.

If they stopped making GBA's then they would have plastics available to make more DS's.

Yea, but if there were no SP's availible Nintendo might not get a sale. GBA still has great games availible and an ever extensive back library. And there is no doubt or hesitancy about the PSP outselling the DS. So I wouldn't be so quick to kill the SP off.

GBA is still outselling the PSP, keep it going for as long as it'll go! It just makes Sony look all the more fail.

Watch as a solitary tear rolls down my face in sympathy for most of the third parties on DS.

Most of them threw their lot in with the PSP from Day One and are now sent scrambling as Nintendo had to build their empire all by themselves, sans Square Enix, who actually favored DS.  Now that the PSP ship is sinking, it should stand to reason that their fanbase on DS is low, and therefore they may not get as big a piece of the pie.  But it's not like they have much choice in the matter.  PSP software sales are abysmal, so a small piece of a big pie is better than a small piece of a little pie.

Yeah 3rd party developers bet on the wrong horse and now they are scrambling to play catch up. I mean Konami, Capcom, and Sega haven't exactly been putting top notch titles out for DS. Especially Capcom, I'm sure they are rethinking their position now.

I can't even imagine how bad the PSP will be crushed with DQIX coming out on the DS now. Definitely amazing how succcessful the DS has become. I can at least say that I bought mine 6AM the morning of the launch with Super Mario 64 DS, contributing to it's success in it's infancy.

Whats funny to me is how konami constanly keeps supporting the PSP with titles. I mean the 2 metal gear acid titles, that rpg called tower of something, that fps which they are making a sequel too now, and of course they made MGS potable ops, which is the legitimate sequel to MGS 3 and thats a biggie.

Is konami making some sort of a profit off the psp? Whats with all that psp support? Or did they just not want to throw away any engines they made for that system since it looks like they put alot of work into it (considering they were supporting the psp more than ds from day one SANS castlevania.)

What gives, how much of a hit are they willing to take fancially until they give up and put out some more games for the DS or just port their titles over to the PS2 like rockstar did.

With regards to Konami, I don't know what their sales are like, but I wouldn't be surprised if Sony is giving Konami some money hats, and it's also possible that the MGS games are just selling well.  I seem to recall the Acid games doing pretty well. There's something to be said for supporting a "niche" system...there's less competition and you may find that the audience fits right in your target demographic.  This is something Nintendo fans loved to point out during the GameCube era but have conveniently forgotten since DS and Wii started turning things around.

I know the first acid sold decently well, but it was a launch title, and it wasn;t the top seller of the launch titles.
As for acid 2 i heard no news of its success, and i know the FPS they released which they are making a sequel to now got a massive price slash because they didn't move enough units before the sequels release. I don't know about the rpg. They have even more games then the ones i'm thinking of for sure.

Personally i don't know anything about niche market or whatever, all i care about is getting developer support with games and series i enjoy. And i enjoy MGS, and i would have liked to see some incarnation either on the DS or Wii (esspecially with kojima's love for Smash brothers, i mean the guy could at least throw nintendo a bone). But at this rate, it looks like konami just sticks with demographics. PSP = mature and DS does not, which makes no sense, the only thing PSP = is expensive.

I got y'all beat!  I was the first and only person to own one in my town the day it came out!

My store sold me one because I threw a hissy fit (They were marked on the boxes to come out that day and Wal*Mart TV was advertising for about a week that they were "on sale now") - but they wanted to save them for the ad that was coming out as well - so they made the decision to sell them to anyone who showed up at midnight and save the rest for that Friday.  And I was the only one who showed up at midnight!
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

I didn't see Sonic Rush on that list unless it was written in a different Japanese name. That surprises me. Of all the Sega DS games, I expected that to be the highest. Does Sonic not sell in Japan anymore?

Also, how come Nintendo isn't releasing more copies of older games? Like Wario Ware Touched. I'm sure that could become a 2 million seller. But they have stopped making copies of that game. I don't have it. I'd buy it. And I know at least 3 other people who have DS's who don't have that game and would like to buy it also.

Same with Advance Wars Dual Strike and Yoshi: Touch & Go. All of us would like these games. I'm sure there are plenty more who would be interested in these games. The DS userbase has exploded so much since they were released. I'm sure there is still a market for them.
Whoever said, "Cheaters never win" must've never met Khushrenada.
