I'll laugh if next week the ps2 beats the ps3.  That would be ironic.

Seriously though the Wii will initially have a horrible tie-in-ratio, WiiSports to blame.  It will then get better.  Next week it should be better for the ps3.

Yeah the DS is going to cream the PS3 this week I'm sure.  The DS numbers just have to hold.

You don't think that all those dissapointed would be owners of a PS3 that have $600+ saved just for gaming might not change their mind and buy a Wii instead and then use that extra $350+ to buy a few games?

I'm predicting a 2.4 ratio for Wii upon release, and thats not including Wii sports.

Did the Japanese PS3 launch with Blue-Ray copy of Ricky Bobby?

That's not necessarily true, given the number of people who will buy the console just to resell it.

That sounds about right to me too.

I'm personally giving the Wii a 1:4 tie in, not counting sports. This'll be the highest number of games I'll buy with a console, ever, and I'm being conservative and only buying multiplayer games which I know I'll get value from with all the Wiimotes ($180 and all, I BETTER get my $$$ worth...).

Well if the launch lineup was limited to those 5 games then each game will have a higher chance to get bought but even at this case the software sales bombed. And considering this was launch that is not encouraging but on the other side the true point of the PS3 is just so Sony can create a install base for Blu-ray but didn't Sony try that with  the PSP for UMD and it failed horribly hmm we will see how these few next months will turn out.

UMD failed because it had no equivalent home player among other things.

While I agree Blu-ray and UMD are not the same thing, there is still a big question mark over Blu-ray.  It looks like this:

What does Blu-ray offer?

Higher resolution is the answer.  I tried explaining that to my aunt the other day and after my explanation, everyone in the room's eyes had glazed over, and my mom said, "Now you're sorry you asked, aren't you?"

What did DVD offer?  Not just picture quality, also:

- more compact size (an entire season of TV shows fits in a box the size of one VHS tape)
- menu systems that significantly reduce rewinding and fast forwarding
- special features

Blu-ray only offers better picture quality, and with HDTV at maybe 20% penetration in North America and probably lower in most other places, how high can the demand for Blu-ray OR HD-DVD be?  Not very, I say.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Well, it's more than that.  I'm not saying it's a compelling reason to switch to BluRay / HD-DVD, but the entire user experience is vastly improved.  The menus can be popped up over the running movie, transitions are smooth and animated, no more pauses mid-movie while it switches layers, and vastly more special features.

If you haven't played around with it you should - whether or not it makes the formats worth getting, it is pretty cool.  It makes DVD seem old and clunky by comparison.

If you have pauses from layer transitions it isn't the DVDs fault. You/they have a POS dvd player.

Why would anyone need the menu while the movie is playing? Currently to switch angle/subtitles/sound tracks require only a button press.

Seriously, was about to make those same exact points. Although how many DVDs actually come with the angle feature is hardly any at all...

Suffice to say, though, DVD is more than fine for me until we actually see a worth while leap in tech for home videos, like DVD was for VHS.

My main problem with BluRay is HDDVD. The fact that the two sides refused to come together and make one format is offensive to the consumer. I refuse to buy either until one wins out.

The real reason it won't catch on, though, is cost. If the players were like $150 instead of $800 people would considering buying them. Likewise, the discs are expensive. The Lost Season 1 set that is supposedly coming out next summer is rumored to cost upwards of $200! Your base consumer won't pay that.

No, it's the fault of the DVD standard not requiring a playback buffer.

Well it's more than that.  It's that you can have software-generated content that overlays / interacts with the movie.  If you use your imagination a little you can see that this could be pretty useful.

Look, I'm not defending the formats.  Couchmonkey said that the only difference between DVD and BluRay / HD-DVD was picture quality - I'm just pointing out that there's much more to it than that.  They're full-fledged software platforms that can do complicated things that could never be achieved with DVD.  The best analogy I can think of is strict HTML vs Flash-enhanced web sites.  For most purposes HTML is fine, but Flash lets you do a lot of things that HTML could never accomplish.

Is there any way to tell whether a DVD player does this?  Is there a buzzword or feature name to look for?

Make sure it has a buffer.  The Denon 1920, for example, has a 2MB buffer (and the higher end Denons have an 8MB buffer).  Those Oppo 971 players that are all the rage these days have an 8MB buffer.

Oohhboy is flaming when he says that DVD players without it are "POS" - it's a relatively new feature.  There's lots of really nice DVD players out there that don't have this feature, though at this point I wouldn't get one without it.  Not worth replacing your DVD player just for that feature but if you're getting a new one it's definitely worth looking for.

Thanks for the correction!  I still question if these features are enough, but at least there are other features that someone like my aunt might appreciate.  Another point that I forgot to concede earlier is that, yes, Blu-ray is better for holding loads of content, a plus for games.

I think Blu-ray may be a big draw for PS3 down the road, but it will depend on PS3 and Blu-ray maintaining a certain level of popularity until such a time as Blu-ray players become a big plus for consumers.

I'll answer you even though I know you were being sarcastic.

I put it here for later reference as DS puts everything else(combined) to shame once again.

Actually, PS3, PS2, and PSP combined might match DS sales.  I guess it depends on if Nintendo added enough new stock.

Supposedly Nintendo had been stockpiling DSLites like has been previously mentioned and released them all just b4 the PS3 launch. So I expect DSL to outsell everything(combined) on the sales chart this week, again.

I'm sure everyone waiting in line for a PS3 either already owned a DSL or bought one just to wait in line with, and if they didn't, don't be surprised if they bought one afterwards when they found out that there were no more PS3's available and they would have to come back and wait in line again some other day .

If they did that, isn't there a good chance Wii sales would be lowered because they consumer just bought a gaming system the week before?

Wii doesn't come out till Dec. 2nd in Japan, and with the money they saved buying a DS instead of a PS3 would mean that they actually have money left over for a Wii. Not to mention that Japan is Nintendo happy right now...
