General Gaming / Gaming on this LCD (Wii in particular)
« on: May 09, 2008, 10:31:37 PM »
The time has come for me to upgrade from my current 14" TV.  I'd really like a flat-screen CRT TV becuase honestly, I'm not completely sold on the image quality of LCDs, and I can get a bigger CRT screen for the money.  But I think I missed the boat on that one - I'm looking for a 22"+ TV, and I can't find any at major retailers (I want to purchase it somewhere where I can return it if need be even if I'm away at school) - if you know of any please let me know!

I finally have the money to get a new TV and since I'm apparently out of CRT options, I've looked into some LCDs, and I found a 32" Element for $480 (here, if you're interested: http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Element-32-LCD-HDTV-FLX3220F/sem/rpsm/oid/192026/catOid/-12866/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do).  I am concerned about lag, though, particularly for Guitar Hero (and even N64 :P).  I've done some searching online and I've read the mailbags pertaining to this, but I am still a little confused.

The resolution on this TV is 720p.  I will be picking up a set of component cables for my Wii.  Since this is a lower-end TV, I am afraid lag will be even more apparent - but what are your opinions on this?  Has the technology come far enough that this lag is not such a big deal anymore?

I am bummed that I can't find a suitable SD (I do not have any HD sources) tube TV, and I will be even more bummed if my new TV renders my video games nearly unplayable.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or input.  The TV I picked out above is about the highest I am willing to go as far as price.

Thanks!

The only wrestling I've watched since the demise of WCW has been a few TNA's weekly PPVs (and maybe an episode of Impact), and some internationaly PPVs with Sting, so I don't know very much about TNA's current storylines and roster...but I have been waiting since Revenge for N64 to see Sting in a great wrestling video game, and I really hope that this is it.  I don't know what their plans are for alternate costumes, but I am a little nervous that they won't have the classic black & white facepaint/outfit.  I think it's cool that he has been kind of combining the crow/Bladerunner looks (as he is in the trailer), but when it comes down to it, I just want the Sting I've been accustomed to.

I would definately go with a WaveBird.  My Bird just may well be one of my favorite things ever, and if I had the money laying around I would buy 3 or 4 more.

I agree that it would seem odd to have something like that from Nintendo at this point - but that's something I definately wouldn't complain about.  Sure there are drawbacks to voice chat (listening to a 12 year old playing Halo 2 explain why Jigglypuff was the best Pokemon comes to mind)...but if it can be turned off (or muted through a headset) then at least there's a choice there.  I don't think it would turn non-gamers off (though clearly I can't speak from that perspective) as much as it would be a nice option for those who would like to add a little more to the experience.

I know we don't really know much about it so far, but what are your expectations for the game?  I have been playing the PC version of Battlefield 2 a lot lately, so I certainly have high hopes for this game...but I am not quite sure that the online experience will be that great the first time around.  Hopefully the Zapper will add to the experience (I am kind of concerned about the comfort of using the Zapper for extended periods).  And, voice chatting would be an awesome addition (maybe Nintendo will release a headset for the Wii?).

Definately a game that I'm going to be following.

NWR Feedback / Sort VC titles by recommendation
« on: July 15, 2007, 07:21:58 PM »
Would it be difficult to add another drop down (or even make the graphics for the Everyone/Fans/Not Recommended clickable) to sort all VC titles by their recommendation?  If I want to plop down a couple of bucks on a VC title, it would be nice and super convenient to be able to select "Recommended for Everyone" and have all of those titles appear, rather than having to go through all of the VC Mondays individually.

Is it possible to get all of the skill/attribute points?  I haven't played much lately because I "beat" the game - I became Don of NYC, I've taken over everything, etc.  I just have hit contracts to finish, the rest of the safes to crack, and the fights to go through...is there enough left there to get enough respect to level all the way up and get all of the points?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Mortal Kombat Wii
« on: June 07, 2007, 03:39:36 PM »
Well, I just picked the game up yesterday...I am enjoying it so far, but it has definately taken me a bit to get used to.  The button combinations for the other moves are what gets me - do people actually memorize all 60+ moves for each player (granted many of the combinations are shared between players)?  If I could just zap all of those moves and combos into my memory I would be having a lot more fun with it, but I will probably never ever use most of the moves.  I haven't played it with anything but the Wii Remote yet, and I find that generally the motion controls are responsive.  It says in the book that your motions need to be about 12", and as long I keep that in mind and don't try to do quick, small movements, it seems fine.

One thing that is frustrating me is the Kreate a Fatality...it's much more fun to just push a single combination and watch the fatality, and I find it a bit ridiculous that you have to guess which motion to do next.  Having to do them to on-screen cues would have been fine, but when I want to pull off a kick-@$$ finisher and I can only get two gestures figured out, it's really anti-climactic.

Worth the $50 purchase, then?  Or just a rental?  I have been thinking about buying this game since it was announced.

I guess that is the point/question I was getting at: clearly this will open the system up to a new audience and maybe even tip some people toward the Wii who were on the fence - but is this worth possibly alienating the 'family' audience?  I think as long as there is a balance of games that can satisfy both audiences, the system will be fine.

There were a couple of times when I was reading IGN's impressions when I thought, "is this really necessary?" - but then again, what video games really ARE necessary? They're supposed to be a temporary escape from reality, and that is exactly what this game is...you certainly couldn't (shouldn't, perhaps) do this in real life. I am not the kind of person who would go downtown and beat the crap out of somebody just to see what it feels like, but I'm not going to lie - it's somewhat satisfying to strangle somebody or pop them in the face with a shotgun in a video game. I guess it just depends on your point of view whether you consider it "sick" or just "not something you would do in real-life".

As a gamer and a very liberal person, I am somewhat biased, but my opinion of "videogames causing violence" is that people who "learn to kill" from video games are messed up to begin with. Sure it has been shown that playing violent video games increases aggression, but seriously - if you play this game and think, "that looks like fun, I'm going to go try it on my neighbor", it's not the video game's fault - there's something wrong with you from the get-go. The game isn't reality, plain and simple. That's just my two cents. I'll at least give it a rental - after all, if the game isn't fun, no amount of violence is going to make it worth the money. How do you guys think this will affect sales and the image of the Wii? There are obviously the "Nintendo is for kids" people who are going to see the game and just might change their opinion. But what about the people who bought Nintendo stuff just FOR the "kid" image? Do you think they'll be turned off/feel betrayed because the brand they always bought for their kids just put this on their system? Those who were deciding whether to buy a Wii might either be inclined to buy it because of the game, or stay away from it at the thought that their kids could play something like this on the system. I do agree that, despite the violence and controversy, this is a great step forward for Nintendo.

Hey, for those of you who've played into the game a bit, I was just wondering if there was any order I should do things in?  I've taken over almost all the businesses and two compounds...if I don't complete hit contracts, etc. that may happen to deal with rival families BEFORE I take everything over, will they still be available afterwards?  I don't want to eliminate the families and then be stuck with nothing to do - no new income/respect.  After the hit contracts are complete and the rival families are eliminated, is there anything else to do in the game (besides rob banks) for income and to get my respect level up?

Thanks for the help!

Nintendo Gaming / RE:HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, WII!
« on: April 27, 2007, 11:16:58 AM »
Ah, hard to believe that was a year ago already.  I was initially skeptical about the decision, though I could kind of understand Nintendo's logic behind the name.  I admit, I did feel a bit stupid saying, "do you have a Wii?" - but I practiced saying it - even in my sleep - so that it became second-nature.  Then, I got used to the name (which honestly I thought would never happen).

Nintendo still has a long road ahead (as do Sony and Microsoft), and how Nintendo handles its online play will be a huge make-or-break point...but the Wii's success has been a huge sigh of relief for me, and I think a lot of Nintendo fans would share the same opinion.  Between the control style (I was excited about it, but it was risky), the name, and some of the decisions Nintendo has made in the past, my head was about to explode from nervousness - the system had the potential to be a huge success or a huge flop.  Kudos to Nintendo for taking those huge risks and shutting us optimistic skeptics up - now I can sleep easy at night knowing that Nintendo is back in the game.

Beetle Adventure Racing was one of my favorite N64 games, and I'd buy it without hesitation as well.

As for Vigilante 8, I remember seeing the commercials for it and wanting the game, but I've never had the chance to play it.

...when I typed "nintendoworldreport.com" into my address bar, pressed Enter, and was greeted by a pheromone advertisement, with the text that went something like "Nintendo World Report is brought to you today by Pheromone Reviews".  After a brief chuckle and realizing that today was, indeed, not April Fool's Day, I clicked "skip this ad" and arrived at the main page.

It was funny.
But are these types of ads here to stay?  I don't mind them personally, especially when they give me a laugh.

Thanks Chiller, I set the inversions to normal, and the aiming works pretty well though.

I think the only thing that is backwards while inverted is the aiming - after all, if I want to move to the right it's probably because there's a target there, and when I have to move my aim all the way to the left to get the guy on screen and THEN move the aim to the right, it wastest precious time.  Plus I'm still a little jittery with the free-aim thing.  But I don't think the camera control feels backwards on inverted, probably thanks to Halo.  But, I'll get used to it after a while of playing.

Is GUN worth the price?  I remember when I first heard about it, it sounded like it'd turn out to be a good game, but I haven't played it.  It's on my list of games to get after the Wii has been out for forever and GC games are in the bargain bin .

I just picked up The Godfather the other day, and I'm enjoying it so far.  I did have some frustration toward the beginning in the gun training mission - I could not lock on and then aim toward specific body parts with the Wiimote.  I tried for about 20 minutes, finally one of my friends got it by a fluke and finished the mission.  The one gripe (it's actually just an annoyance) I have is that you either have to have everything inverted, or everything not - i.e., I like my camera controls inverted, but the free-aim standard.  Also, I have to say that this is the first Wii game to impress me visually (not that I have seen that many - Wii Sports, Madden, Rayman, Excite Truck, and Trauma Center).  As stated earlier, it looks better than True Crime: New York by leaps and bounds (though that isnt hard to do), but what really made me say, "wow, that looks pretty good" was the crispness of the texture on the damaged rear of a car I was driving.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Blazing Angels, anyone?
« on: March 22, 2007, 12:56:28 PM »
Nice trailer...the control setup looks interesting, holding the Wiimote in your right hand (though I suppose that makes sense for right-handed people manuevering with the Nunchuk).  I notice they didn't have the WiFi logo in that trailer...but it's still on the boxart in some other ads I've seen for it.  Way for them to give me false hope.

Edit:  IGN has their review up on the game, and the game supports no form of online (even leaderboards), and their impressions of the control of the game were disappointing.  I might have to give this one a rental (something I haven't done since the N64 days), but it looks like I'll be waiting for the sequel (or just get Heatseeker, although the Impact Cam seems kind of gimmicky to me, as from the videos I've seen all the explosions look just about the same).

I.  Am.  Bummed.

I wouldn't be excited about it either from reading the reviews of the other two versions...but having played it I am excited to at least find out how the controls are.  Since I started coming to the internet to find out about games before buying them back in the N64 days, I have let the review score determine which games I buy...because honestly, if I'm paying money (especially $50) for something, I want it to be perfect, period.  And unfortunately, when I read just one negative thing about a game in a review, I tend to move on.  This, however (on the 360), is one of those games that is neither great or terrible, but falls under the "fun nonetheless" category, for me anyway.  Hopefully it will be the same for Wii.

Nintendo Gaming / Blazing Angels, anyone?
« on: March 20, 2007, 05:07:09 PM »
I've been waiting for Blazing Angels to come out for Wii since it was announced (I think as a launch title) quite a number of months ago.  My brother had it for the 360, and I really enjoyed it (especially the bombing missions, and multiplayer).  We have heard nothing about the game, except that it was supposed to come out today...I'm just curious to know, if you've played it, what are your thoughts?  And does it have any online functionality?  I know a couple of sites that have the "WiFi Connection" logo as part of the boxart, while others do not.  I have read a couple of places where they've said Ubisoft confirmed that there would be no online play, but they haven't removed the logo from the boxart on their website (the US site, anyway).  I know Pokemon is supposed to be the first online-enabled game...but as stated in the previous mailbag, online leaderboards could at least be a possibility...?  I know I am probably just being overly optimistic, but since we don't really know anything about the Wii version of the game, it could mean something.

Mainly, I am just concerned about how it controls and how the multiplayer is...thoughts?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Matt C. teasing again
« on: February 26, 2007, 09:03:55 AM »
Just my two cents here...

It's Matt's job to cover the system, not support the system 100%.  It's not his job to be a Nintendo fan.  Just because he isn't sugar coating problems, issues, etc. does not mean he's not a Nintendo fan.  If things are going rough, why not say so?  He's supposed to be an editor at a video game site, not a fanboy.  I enjoy and respect the fact that he's not afraid to say "hey, Nintendo is screwing up on this one" or "for this and this reason, an XBOX might be a better choice".  He wasn't "bashing" Nintendo - but the company faltered with the Cube, and he was not afraid to bring the faults to light and discuss them.  I am glad that I didn't have to visit the IGN Cube site every day only to read nothing but shining praise for Nintendo, when clearly they had made mistakes.  Being a video game company, they know they're under the spotlight (especially with gaming media), which makes the mistakes all the less immune to extreme criticism.  I do not want to go to a video game website and read a bunch of stories that are written for the purpose of "supporting" the system or making it look good - I want to read about the system, what's going good and what's going bad.   Matt isn't jumping on the "I love Nintendo" bandwagon - he's been there all along.  Just because there were problems to point out on the Cube does not mean that he abandoned the company.  It means that there were problems to point out.

I don't think he lacked the spine to defend Nintendo - he gave credit where credit was due, and he criticized where that was due as well.  And of course the media is going to have an effect on the image, etc. of a console - however, in my opinion they bring out the problems with the console/company, not create new ones.  If Matt's influence can sway buyers, that's all the more reason to express the negatives as well as the positives.  If not, then to me it's just like reviewing a terrible game, and saying "the disc comes in a case, and the game runs, plus it's for GameCube so give it a shot!".  Pointing out the negatives is just as important as pointing out the positives.

Case in point: it's my opinion that the media magnifies the moves that the company makes, and the image that the company creates (whether that image was created on purpose or not).  Therefore, whatever is magnified, started with the company.  I like being able to go to IGN (Cube and Wii, anyway), and hear what is going wrong AND what is going right.  Feed me some negativity - if it's not a lie, then that's what I came there to read in the first place.  And for the record, Matt did acknowledge with the Wii that Nintendo was on to something, but was cautiously optimistic about it.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Writing on Wii controllers?
« on: February 13, 2007, 11:32:07 AM »
The Wiimote that came with my system (which was picked up on Dec. 23) has that writing on the side, but the two that I bought individually (one the day before Thanksgiving and the other sometime before Christmas) don't have writing on them.  Maybe it has something to do with it being included with a system/game, or something like that.

Nintendo Gaming / Xanga has some Wii love
« on: November 20, 2006, 01:41:45 PM »
Was browsing some of my friend's Xanga sites just now, and when you view comments for entires, there is a Wii logo next to the picture of the person who left the comment, and when you mouse-over the picture the cursor turns into a Wiimote.  If you click on the Wii logo, it takes you to Wii's Xanga page.  I know most of you are too busy at this point to care, but I thought it was an interesting bit of advertising I'd point out.
