Nintendo Gaming / Bye Bye Gamecube
« on: June 13, 2003, 06:56:19 AM »
Don't be so hard on this guy.  While similar posts I have seen looked like flamebait, this one seems more of a frustration posting.  He had 13 GC games and it wasn't the console for him.  You can't say he didn't give the cube a chance (13 is a lot of games).

His invalid complaints (IMO):

-Wrestling:  PS2 is not that much better for wrestling games.  Both consoles have Def Jam, and Ultimate Muscle is GC exclusive.  From what I've heard, wrestling games this generation besides those two are merely mediocre.

His valid complaints:

-GC won't go online.  Online may be a priority for him.  It's not to many of us, but our opinion doesn't make something irrelevant.

-Current Nintendo games have let him down a bit.  He may be bored of what Nintendo has released thus far.

-He likes the PS2 lineup better.  Personal preference here.  You also can't deny the fact that the PS2 library is much larger.

It sounds like his complaints are less to do with the PS2 and everything to do with disillusionment with Nintendo.  He feels that they have not performed up to the high standards he has placed upon them.  The fact that they are not jumping online says to him that Nintendo are not willing to take risks that he wants them to take.  There is no one to blame here, Nintendo just does not appeal to this person anymore. Who knows, maybe he won't be satisfied with the PS2 either.  Maybe something on the Cube will catch his eye later and rekindle that love.  He can always play on his sister's Cube.

I just think they need a good director.  Ridley Scott is good at action/entertaining stuff like this.  Maybe they could go for someone like Ang Lee.. that'd be interesting too.

Ya, any Miyazaki film would be wicked.  A Gummi Bears action game would be cool too.

Nintendo Gaming / I've figured out Nintendo'd 3rd Party Problem
« on: May 20, 2003, 01:10:40 PM »
I think your first reason is the biggest.  People bought the GC for Nintendo games.  They just don't buy third party games (there are exceptions).  Monkey Ball 1 & 2, Sonic games, Resident Evil games, Rogue Squadron.. what else has sold well?  It seems third party games have to either a launch title, f'ing amazing, or a huge franchise in order to sell on the GC.  This is a big difference compared to the N64 where many third party games sold more than PSX games did.  True, the N64 had less games, but there has to be more to it than that.

So, what's different between the N64 and the GC?  Well, Nintendo had a better rep going into the N64 generation and it had a huge userbase from the start thanks to Mario 64.  However, it was also seen as the multiplayer console.  Goldeneye brought in a lot of ppl who may not necessarily be interested in Nintendo type games, but rather, they are interested in FPS and Western developed games.  So, many ppl who were into FPS, multiplayer, and western games bought the N64 (because of Goldeneye).  Since the userbase had a large amount of these ppl, the kind of the games that cater to them (mostly third party) flew off the shelves.

Now, fast forward to this generation.  Halo is the new Goldeneye.  These same ppl who bought an N64 for Goldeneye are buying the Xbox for Halo.  Western developers are flocking to MS's machine.  Xbox is obviously seen as the western, fps, and possibly multiplayer console.  It also is the most powerful system (another trump that the N64 had).  So Nintendo has lost the people who bought N64 third party games while still retaining the fans of their own software.  Remember, it's mainly western developers that are whining because 1. their games sold well on the N64; and 2. they aren't selling on the GC.  There actually wasn't much Japanese support for the N64 (if I remember correctly); it was THE western console of the time.

Frankly, I can't see any way Nintendo can fix this for the current generation.  It's too late.  The PS2 is the mainstream console.  The Xbox is the western console.  The Gamecube is the Nintendo console.

Nintendo Gaming / Treasure's Opportunity
« on: May 15, 2003, 08:34:00 PM »
Great idea.  I always wanted a coop Mario bros game....

Speaking of Treasure, I got Ikaruga last week.  Brilliant game.  It might be a little expensive for those wanting a longer game, but it's definately worth a rent, at least.  I unlocked the galleries.. the art is awesome.

Nintendo Gaming / Geist: Coolest game style ever!

Can you elaborate on why it felt fresh and new?  Is there anything special about the controls and gameplay?  Or does it just feel good?

Nintendo Gaming / GCN-GBA Connectivity: who cares?
« on: May 14, 2003, 06:59:57 AM »
I agree.. though, the Pacman idea is actually pretty interesting.  Regardless, if Nintendo really wanted the GBA to help GC sales, it should pack in the gba player with all new GC's instead of a price cut.  It's as easy as that.

lol jc.. you call pacman a kiddie title?  I'm betting the majority of people who play and played pacman (and ms. pacman) at the time are older than you are--or at least more mature.

Nintendo Gaming / lack of good teen or mature games
« on: May 12, 2003, 10:18:29 AM »
who cares if they're falling behind?  So what do you expect us to do about it?  go buy an xbox.  The GC is obviously for Nintendo games.  To me, "teen" has worse connotations than "everyone" or "kids" ever did.  What book for teenagers was ever a thought-provoking classic?  At least good "kids" stories are chalkful of meaningful themes, ideas, and archetypal allegory/metaphor.  There are very few truely mature games out there.  Videogames are for the immature, and that is why I like them.

Oh, and FPS games (besides Goldeneye and Halo) suck.

Nintendo Gaming / FF:CC needs more than one GBA?
« on: May 08, 2003, 09:31:59 PM »
I was very excited about this game as I am a very big fan of Secret of Mana.  However, this gba requirement for multiplayer has changed my mind.  I hope this game sells like sh*t.  (yes, I am very angry).  And no, I don't have 3 friends with GBA's.

Nintendo Gaming / Gamecube Rentals
« on: April 21, 2003, 09:32:11 PM »
The selection of Gamecube games at my local Blockbuster and Rogers is really really slim.  Does anyone in Edmonton know where I can find a good GC selection in the city?  I'd especially like to rent Ikaruga, but don't know where I can rent it.

edit: I think we should all make an extra effort to rent more GC games.  Numbers and $ are the only way they will listen.

Nintendo Gaming / Dual Anolog: Am I the only one
« on: April 08, 2003, 12:24:15 PM »
Goldeneye is the only fps I've ever really liked so I'd have to agree with the original poster.  I even convinced myself I loved games timesplitters 2 and halo.  But now I realise that they just don't feel the same.  FPS games are just not my thing.  Goldeneye was different because it felt more like a console game than any other fps I've played.  I also don't like all this futuristic stuff...

Sunshine changed gameplay, but it wasn't as big a jump as Mario 64 was from its predecessor.

18
I like that idea.  Of course it would change the way they design the games and the type of gameplay involved but that's what many are arguing for anyways.  Mario and Luigi coop would be awesome if they can pull it off.

NWR Feedback / The Seamus Interview
« on: April 01, 2003, 01:45:23 PM »
Would it be possible to get a transcript of the interview?  Or would that take too much time/effort?

21
Certainly sounds that way, though I believe Perrin Kaplan's a 'she'.  I recall hearing someone from Nintendo say that they will continue to develop for the GC even after the next system is released.  But, I think we all have to take that with a grain of a salt.

Ok, that's top 5 on my interest list.  I'll have to wait and see about the other 5.

Nintendo Gaming / New commercial
« on: February 24, 2003, 07:49:40 PM »
They should really air a Zelda commercial like the ones they have in japan.  You know, the ones that are similar to the one on the Oot Bonus Disc, but better.  They have that awesome version of the Zelda theme and in the middle of one of them, there is a series of shots of Link unsheathing his sword.  That just spells classic.

All they have to do is replace the Japanese and it'd be perfect!
