TalkBack / Gone Home No Longer in Development for Wii U
« on: March 03, 2015, 02:03:04 PM »

In fact, The Fullbright Company isn't working on console ports at all.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/39737/gone-home-no-longer-in-development-for-wii-u

The hit PC indie game Gone Home is no longer in development for Wii U or any other consoles, The Fulbright Company has confirmed.

In a livestream hosted by Kinda Funny Games, The Fulbright Company co-founder Steve Gaynor explained: "At this point, unfortunately, I have to acknowledge that Gone Home for console is not actively in development any longer.

"That deal with Majesco has sadly come to an end. So, we don’t really know what that means for Gone Home for console for us. In the immediate term, it’s no longer a going thing."

Whether or not it will ever come to Wii U remains up in the air, but right now, it doesn't look like Nintendo fans will get a chance to play the story-heavy adventure game anytime soon.

TalkBack / Zelda Producer Says Tingle Is Not Gay
« on: February 22, 2015, 08:38:49 AM »

This odd little elf is quite the character.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/39661/zelda-producer-says-tingle-is-not-gay

Tingle, the polarizing elf that has appeared in a handful of The Legend of Zelda games, is not gay, series producer Eiji Aonuma has confirmed.

"He's not gay. He's just an odd person," he told Kotaku.

Aonuma also discussed the creation of the character, noting that he wanted Tingle to look like a man who didn't ever want to grow up. "The whole thing comes together as a very Peter Pan kind of visual," he explained. "You know, if you think about it, it's this guy in his 30s in a green suit and is flying and never wants to grow up, it all sort of comes together around that."

Are you a fan of Tingle or do you think the Zelda franchise would be better off without him?

TalkBack / Nintendo Explains Why Smaller New 3DS Isn't Coming to NA
« on: February 17, 2015, 07:09:01 AM »

Upsetting the core audience was expected.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/39652/nintendo-explains-why-smaller-new-3ds-isnt-coming-to-na

Nintendo has finally explained why the company decided not to bring the smaller, standard model of New 3DS that supports swappable face plates to North America.

Damon Baker, the Senior Manager in Marketing and Licensing at NoA, told Nintendo Life that it came down to making things as clear as possible for consumers in the North American market.

"Look, the face plates are super cool, but we're a different market. And now we have clear differentiation between those three systems," he explained. "Before, there was a very limited difference between the 3DS and 3DS XL: other than size. It was the same resolution, same functionality... now, there's the 2DS, 3DS, and New 3DS XL, all of which have their own functionality and features. The different price points give it a clear message for consumers."

Naturally the company knew it would upset hardcore Nintendo fans, but that was a sacrifice the company was willing to make. "The core audience... we weren't going to win with them on that decision. But we had to think about expanding the user base, we had to be able to market it and make it easy to pick up for consumers."

Are you disappointed the smaller model isn't available in North America or are you more than happy with the XL? Let us know in the comments below!

TalkBack / Unlock Virtual Console Trials With Amiibo Later This Year
« on: February 16, 2015, 04:52:05 PM »

Tapping the toys to the Wii U GamePad will let you sample some Nintendo classics.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/39644/unlock-virtual-console-trials-with-amiibo-later-this-year

Later this year, Wii U owners will be able to unlock time-limited trial versions of various Nintendo and Super Nintendo games by tapping their Amiibo to the GamePad.

Nintendo president and CEO Satoru Iwata made the announcement during tonight's financial meeting, noting that tapping the same Amiibo multiple times will allow you to select between various scenes within a particular game. The feeling of doing so is apparently akin to that of changing cartridges.

Support for this functionality is planned to go live within the first half of this year.

TalkBack / Iwata Talks Wii U Growth, Smartphone Gaming
« on: February 14, 2015, 11:15:52 AM »

Want to play iOS games on your 3DS? No? Well you're getting them anyway!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/39633/iwata-talks-wii-u-growth-smartphone-gaming

Nintendo president and CEO Satoru Iwata believes there is room for Wii U to grow in the months to come.

With major releases like a new The Legend of Zelda and Xenoblade Chronicles X, the Nintendo boss is confident this year will be a promising one for its home console. "I believe the Wii U business still has considerable room for growth, as a number of software titles that are compatible with the console are slated for release in 2015," Iwata told Nikkei.

With regard to the future of 3DS, Iwata sees smartphone games as a great way to build out the handheld's library and extend its life. "It is also possible to turn smartphone games from other software makers into 3DS-compatible games and offer them for relatively low prices. We intend to pursue a variety of options. Only those products and services that receive strong support from customers will survive."

Do you see a bright and promising future for Wii U and 3DS? Should Nintendo think about releasing new hardware sooner rather than later?

TalkBack / Sonic Boom Is the Worst-Performing Sonic Launch Ever
« on: February 12, 2015, 11:12:34 AM »

Not even a cartoon tie-in can save Sega's struggling hedgehog.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/39621/sonic-boom-is-the-worst-performing-sonic-launch-ever

The launch of Sonic Boom is now Sega's weakest game debut in the history of the franchise.

The combined sales of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal failed to reach half a million sales worldwide. Instead, a mere 490,000 copies of the Wii U and 3DS titles combined were sold.

This is particularly disheartening when considering the sizable marketing push Sega made to generate excitement for these games, going so far as to launch a Sonic Boom cartoon series.

Just recently, Sega announced it was downsizing to restructure and focus its efforts on PC and digital titles. Now it has become perfectly clear why.

TalkBack / Nintendo Tried Buying the Rights to Harry Potter
« on: February 11, 2015, 08:48:31 PM »

The future of J.K. Rowling's magical world could have turned out very differently.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/39610/nintendo-tried-buying-the-rights-to-harry-potter

Nintendo tried to secure the exclusive rights to J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter franchise.

The company created a pitch back in 1998 to obtain the rights to produce all adaptations of the book series. NoA's internal team worked on a pitch for a third-person adventure title based on the popular wizarding franchise. Additionally, a smaller team was broken off at Nintendo Software Technology to develop a title based on quidditch.

However, instead of accepting Nintendo's pitch, Rowling sold the rights to Warner Bros. who went on to produce a film series and contract out the development of video game adaptations to Electronic Arts.

There was reportedly a disagreement over the art style, which contributed to Rowling's decision to not work with the Big N. The company's limited resources and lack of experience in TV and film was another contributing factor.

TalkBack / Iwata: Nintendo Still Committed to Health Initiative
« on: February 10, 2015, 06:18:26 PM »

Like it or not, the Big N is still working on improving your quality of life.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/39606/iwata-nintendo-still-committed-to-health-initiative

Despite the fact it's been quite a while since we've heard from Nintendo about its health initiative, company president Satoru Iwata has confirmed that its quality of life platform is still very much an important part of Nintendo's future.

In an interview with Asahi News, Iwata emphasized the fact that this new third pillar will be separate from what it's doing on the video game front. "It's not necessary to be particular about game hardware," he explained.

However, that doesn't mean the company won't make use of its entertainment knowledge to ensure the success of its sleep-sensing product when it eventually is made available to consumers. "Leveraging our video game know-how, we'll make it so even those who have trouble following through can stick with this program and have fun," Iwata added.

Do you think Nintendo's quality of life initiative is a smart move for the company going forward? Are you afraid at how it might affect its gaming division?

TalkBack / Details on Canceled Metroid Game Surface
« on: February 10, 2015, 03:01:35 PM »

A classic take on the Metroid formula was reportedly in the works for 3DS.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/39609/details-on-canceled-metroid-game-surface

Rumors have been circulating around for quite some time regarding a canceled 2D Metroid game for 3DS, and now we have some new information on the alleged handheld title that will never see the light of day.

According to Unseen64's Liam Robertson, the game was said to offer a faster experience than Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion. The gameplay reportedly took advantage of the 3D depth of Nintendo's latest handheld, offering a 2.5D side-scrolling experience.

Additionally, the visual style was apparently a departure for the series, with Samus looking a bit thinner and more athletic than she has in prior entries.

Finally, while Robertson couldn't reveal the identity of studio that pitched Nintendo the project, he did note that it was "a pretty popular western developer." Considering an artist from Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon developer Next Level Games posted some Metroid concept art in his portfolio, it's likely that the studio worked on this pitch.

TalkBack / Netflix Reportedly Producing Zelda Television Series
« on: February 06, 2015, 11:39:30 AM »

Something tells me Link won't be a silent hero this time around.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/39593/netflix-reportedly-producing-zelda-television-series

A television series based on The Legend of Zelda is reportedly in the works at Netflix.

The Wall Street Journal has heard from a "person familiar with the matter" that the alleged series will be a full-blown live-action production that aims to be like a family-friendly version of Game of Thrones.

As one would expect, the popular streaming service is working closely with Nintendo in the show's production. After all, this is one of the Big N's most prized and recognizable franchises.

Neither Netflix nor Nintendo have commented on the matter, so we'll have to treat this as rumor for the time being. That said, sound off in the comments below and let us know whether or not you'd like to see a live-action adventure in Hyrule.

TalkBack / Splatoon Won't Have Voice Chat in Random Matches
« on: February 06, 2015, 02:40:53 AM »

As for games with friends? Well... that's still a mystery.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/39569/splatoon-wont-have-voice-chat-in-random-matches

New details have emerged regarding Nintendo's upcoming squid-centric shooter, Splatoon.

Sadly, it looks like the game won't support voice chat for those looking to engage in random matches over the internet. Whether or not you'll be able to communicate with friends remains to be seen, but we've reached out to Nintendo for clarification. In addition to online, the studio is also working on a local multiplayer option as well as a 3D platforming game type, dubbed Hero Mode.

With regard to online matchmaking, players around the world will be grouped together based on skill level. Additionally, there won't be any CPU players thrown into the mix, as the game only supports human-controlled 4 vs. 4 matches.

Finally, Splatoon will feature music from Tooru Minegishi, whose work has been featured in a number of Zelda, Mario, and Animal Crossing games.

Are you excited for Nintendo's third-person ink-based shooter? Comment below and let us know whether or not the alleged lack of voice chat is a deal breaker for you.

Despite protests from YouTube streamers, many are still jumping on board.

"Due to your enthusiasm for the program, we’re receiving a higher volume of applications to register channels & videos than expected," Nintendo explained. "It is taking longer than we anticipated to confirm the applications. We appreciate your patience as we work through them as quickly as possible."

In an effort to expedite the process, Nintendo recommends applicants remove content that isn't included in its list of supported games.

« on: January 31, 2015, 08:34:22 AM »

And rightly so!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/39553/metacritic-names-nintendo-publisher-of-the-year

Nintendo was the best publisher of 2014, according to Metacritic's annual publisher rankings.

With an average metascore of 76.5, the Big N was able to outpace Ubisoft and Electronic Arts, who came in second and third, respectively. The company's best overall release was Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, while its lowest-scoring title was Chibi-Robo! Photo Finder.

As far as the user favorite was concerned, it was a three-way tie between the original Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2, and Mario Kart 8, all of which earned a 9.1.

It's no secret Nintendo is one of the best publishers in the business, with franchises unrivaled in terms of recognizability, quality, and popularity. Do you think the company's output last year was worthy of earning it the top spot?
