2009?!

With the releases of WiiFit and Mariokart; not to mention the ever impending color change to black, surely it'll be sooner than that.

Well, it was released on October 3rd, but I think the first day or two were counted in the September NPD.

Everyone seems to be hoping Wii Fit will boost the Wii in Japan, but will that actually be the case? I think the Japanese are already very fit as it is, so why would they need a fitness game? It seems something more suited for overweight westerners. :P

From what I've seen its more than just a fitness games. There are a lot of mini games involved and lots of variety.

Nintendo hopes that Wii Fit strikes lighting like Wii Sports and Wii Play did.

Maybe its just my negative nature but I doubt the game will boost sales. Its a 70 dollar game. When have you heard of an overpriced, peripheral bases game moving consoles? And no, Guitar Hero doesn't count :p .

Yeah, I really don't think that a $70 dollar game will be the second coming of Wii Sports. It'll do good, no doubt, but the price will hold back it's full potential.

Kind of like how a $90 game called Guitar Hero was held back and a $160 game like Rock Band.

I agree with the why-not Guitar Hero peeps here...if Guitar Hero sold, why not this?  The question is what does your  $70 peripheral game have to offer?  If we look at something like Eye of Judgement...let's be honest, card games are a limited, nerdy passtime: Sony is selling to a segment within a segment with that.

Guitar Hero works because who wouldn't like to be able to play guitar?  Almost any gamer can appreciate that, and a ton of "non-gamers" can too. Same thing with Karaoke games.  Why doesn't it work for Bongos or Maracas?  Here's a scientific chart to explain it:

Now does WiiFit have this mass appeal?  I think so.  I can't speak for Japan - maybe people are right that Japan doesn't care about fitness crazes, but unless you've lived there you probably don't know (I sure don't).  What the Japanese seem to like is crazy gadgets (4 million DS TV Tuners preordered, Nintendo can't believe the demand) and WiiFit falls into that category without being too niche.

It may all come down to how well Nintendo advertises it.
That's my opinion, not yours.

WiiFit has more pre-orders in Japan than SSBB

But in SSBB's defense, WiiFit comes out next week(Dec. 1st) and SSBB doesn't come out till next year.

I think that Nintendo should bundle Wii Fit with the Wii in the future instead of cutting the price of the console. This way everyone is going to have a Wii board and this means developers can't ignore it.

With this bundle, the Wii can remain at $249, but you are getting more. Wouldn't this be better than dropping the price to $199 or so?
