NWR's reviews editor is down for some sports and action.
Double Dribble
Original Platform: NES
Virtual Console Platform: Wii (500 points)
Konami's foray into hoops was a fun, simple way of playing basketball. Who could forget the amazing animations every time you scored a slam dunk? Although there are other games on the NES that do basketball just the same, Double Dribble's presentation helps it stand out among the rest, keeping it's nostalgic charm decades after release.
Blades of Steel
Original Platform: NES
Virtual Console Platform: Wii (500 points)
Sports games were all the rage on the NES. And speaking of rage, what is most memorable about the game is the mini game where you can just punch the ever loving crap out of your opponent in a brawl to end it all. There aren't that many hockey games out there where fighting is encouraged, but Blades of Steel certainly pushes you in that direction! Beyond the brawling, it's also a simple, fun hockey game that's easy to get into.
Castlevania
Original Platform: NES
Virtual Console Platform: Wii (500 points), Wii U and 3DS ($4.99)
The game that started it all, Castlevania seems a bit archaic compared to later fare the series would churn out. But it's one of the most enduring games and franchises in video game history, and it's not hard to figure out why. With fun gameplay, cool weapons and a killer soundtrack, the original Castlevania stands the test of time and remains a classic.
Super Castlevania IV
Original Platform: Super Nintendo
Virtual Console Platform: Wii (800 points), Wii U ($7.99)
Super Castlevania IV didn't change the Castlevania formula- later titles in the series would- but one of the things they did fix here is making stair climbing a bit easier to maneuver. Doesn't sound like much, but for any Castlevania fans who remember, that was a change for the better! Super Castlevania IV retained many of the elements from the first game that the other two NES games strayed away fun, but the return to it's roots makes it a fun platformer in the early stages of the Super Nintendo's life.
The Legend of the Mystical Ninja
Original Platform: Super Nintendo
Virtual Console Platform: Wii (800 points), Wii U ($7.99)
Borrowing heavily from feudal Japanese culture, The Legend of the Mystical Ninja was one of the few games in the Goemon series to receive a western release outside of Japan. Despite the limited breakthrough, it remains a cult classic. Combining the adventure and RPG genres, Legend of the Mystical Ninja is a run, lighthearted romp that is definitely worth giving a try.
