3DS Demo Round-Up

Non-Playable Demos

by Neal Ronaghan - June 20, 2010, 10:15 am EDT

Are you curious what was on display in the 3DS section at E3 2010? Look no further, we've got all the demos listed and explained here.

Non-Playable Video Demos

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

The big reveal at the annual developer's roundtable was a 3D version of Ocarina of Time. The game was only shown at the roundtable, but we got to check out the video that played on the 3DS. It showed Link on Epona riding through Hyrule Field in glorious 3D. Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma made a comment at the roundtable about how he plans to make the Water Temple easier to play this time around. Check out the news article revealing it, and the preview that followed.

Paper Mario

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

A brand new entry in the Paper Mario series showed off snazzy 3D effects and a few hints to new gameplay wrinkles. All the paper looked truly flat, and you could see interesting depth. The game is a return to turn-based combat after Super Paper Mario's diversion, and there is a Chain Chomp character that will help you along the way. The 3D effects showed a brick being broken off in every dimension, and a wiggler walking towards you. When hidden areas are revealed, such as walls moving backward to open a path to a new area, the wall would actually sink into the background with 3D enabled. Stickers on the battles stand out well. The game might be set for a March 25 launch in Europe if this report was indeed true.

Kid Icarus Uprising

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

The first Nintendo game revealed for 3DS, Kid Icarus Uprising is being developed by Project Sora, which is headed up by Masahiro Sakurai. Pit returns after a long hiatus to fend off enemies and save the day. The debut trailer, which was shown in 3D on the show floor, shows varied gameplay. The air combat looks like a cross between Sin & Punishment and Star Fox, and the ground combat looks to be rife with fast-paced third-person action. Palutena and the Eggplant Wizard will be making returns in the first Kid Icarus game since the Game Boy. Check out the trailer if you're curious.

Classic Collection

This video seemed unnoticed by some people, but it featured a ton of classic games presented with 3D effects. The full list is here, but such notable games as Kirby's Adventure, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Punch-Out!!, Mega Man, Excitebike, Castlevania, and Metroid were shown. Apparently, according to Reggie Fils-Aime, these games will be released. How? We're not quite sure yet.

Mario Kart

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

This video looked like a GameCube-quality Mario Kart game, and the 3D effects showed depth in the tracks, as if they were actually driving to and away from you. While this most likely was just a video showing off the system, it could easily turn into a full-featured 3DS game in the coming years. We have a preview up for your viewing.

Animal Crossing

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

Little is known about the upcoming Animal Crossing title for 3DS, but we do know that you'll be able to become the mayor of your town. Character models are new, with both animals and player characters taller and slimmer. The 3D effects showed the different in height between the cliff, shore and sea. Our preview has the story and more.

Metal Gear Solid 3D: The Naked Sample

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

Easily the most impressive 3D video on the system so far, Metal Gear Solid 3D shows off what the system can do, both in a graphical and 3D level. Read some thoughts on the video here.

Dead or Alive 3D

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

Little is known about the gameplay mechanics of this fighting title, as the trailer did not show gameplay elements. From the series, Ryu Hayabusa, Ayane and Kasumi have been confirmed as returning characters.

Kingdom Hearts 3D

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

The video showed Sora and Riku, two of the series' main characters, walking around the island from the first title and fighting off enemies. Apparently this will be an entirely new game that will be revealed after the latest batch of Kingdom Hearts games are released. The final name won't be Kingdom Hearts 3D, but 3D stands for something in the game other than the third dimension. Yoko Shimomura, known for her work on the other games in the series, will be composing the music for Kingdom Hearts 3D, and the game is being developed by Square Enix and h.a.n.d., who also made Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days.

Resident Evil Revelations

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

This new entry in the Resident Evil series was represented by a short video showing Chris Redfield being questioned while strapped to a chair. He flashes back to moments with Jill Valentine, and what might be Hunk from Resident Evil 2. It's a fantastic looking game, though a few of us experienced some problems with the 3D effects. It's not quite as impressive as the Metal Gear Solid video, but it was still one of the sharpest looking games on the show floor.
