Playable Demos

by Neal Ronaghan - June 20, 2010, 10:15 am EDT

Are you curious what was on display in the 3DS section at E3 2010? Look no further, we've got all the demos listed and explained here.

Playable

Pilotwings Resort

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

PilotWings Resort was one of the more full-featured demos at E3. It featured two sections with the airplane and the rocket belt. The game takes place on Wii Fit and Wii Sports Resort's Wuhu Island, and both Neal and TYP liked it a lot. For more details on the game, read our preview as well.

Star Fox 64 3D

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

While right now it seems to be a straight port of Star Fox 64, the 3D version adds a great sense of depth with the 3D presentation. Supposedly the game will seem some refinements, though it was hard to tell what they were from the short demo of the beginning of the first level. Read Neal's thoughts on the game and Pedro's preview for more details.

Steel Diver

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

Initially shown on the DS in 2004, Steel Diver is finally near completion as a title for 3DS. The submarine simulation gameplay makes use of the touch screen to control different levers to steer your craft and the top screen to display the side-scrolling presentation in 3D. Jonny enjoyed the demo, while James didn't. Draw your own conclusion from their contrasting impressions, or read our preview.

Nintendogs + Cats

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

The popular series is set to make a comeback on 3DS with the addition of cats and 3D effects. The demo at E3 only had three dogs to play with, but you could interact with them in 3D by petting them, throwing toys, and dolling them up. Read Karlie's and Neal's impressions for details. We also have a preview up if you're interested.

The Sims 3

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

The Sims 3 demo showed the character creator in 3D, with all the face, body, and clothing customizations you would expect, including face mapping, allowing you to sculpt the face. It is set to include many of the modes already announced for other platforms.

DJ Hero 3D

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

DJ Hero is going portable in this new 3DS version. The top screen displays the note highway, with the DJ and notes popping out of the screen thanks to the 3D. The bottom screen displays a record, which you scratch to play the notes. James tried it out, so read his impressions for more information.

Samurai Warriors 3D

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

Samurai Warriors 3D's demo showed off a short gameplay segment and a video. Read our impressions for more on Tecmo's game.

Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

Professor Layton could be making his North American non-Nintendo-published debut with Mask of Miracle, which could be published by Level 5 in North America instead of Nintendo. The demo showed off an environment and one puzzle. Check out our impressions for more on that.

Ridge Racer 3D

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2010:

With the launch of another portable Nintendo system, Ridge Racer is coming out to play, but this time it is in 3D. Check out some impressions to see what's going on with Namco's series on the 3DS.

Xevious

Remember the classic shoot-'em-up from 1982? Well, it was playable with a 3D effect on the E3 show floor. The ships popped off the background for a neat effect.

Face Ace

It begins by taking your picture, and then morphing it into 3D. Then, you're tasked with shooting down enemy versions of your own face while moving around in a circle. Check out our impressions for more about how it works.

Tech Demo: Target Shooting

This alternate-reality game begins unassumingly as a target shooter, and then evolves until you're fighting a dragon in 3D while you point at a small card featuring a question-mark block on it. Karlie lived to tell the tale.

Tech Demo: 3D Jumping

You controlled a cat on a pogo stick in this demo, which showed off platforming in 3D space. It presented the same footage in 2D on the bottom screen, and 3D on the top. Read our impressions to find out how 3D made playing this game possible.

Tech Demo: 3D Camera

This simple demo showed you the wonders of the 3D camera on the 3DS. The representatives seemed to be focused on showing off the depth when you hold your hand out in front of you.

Tech Demo: 3D Paddle Ball

Extremely similar to Pong, this 3D-infused game showed the game in a new light. Read our impressions for more on how it worked.

Tech Demo: 3D Challenge

This tech demo showed off how the 3DS can display the contrast between 3D and 2D. It starts off by asking you to figure out which strawberry displayed is presented in 3D, and then offered a few more challenges. Read our impressions for more on the game.
