Killer Freaks Wii U Development Began in 2009

A LinkedIn profile suggests that development on the Wii U first-person shooter began in September 2009.

Yoan Fanise, current audio director of Ubisoft Singapore, worked with Ubisoft Montpeiller from September 2009 to October 2010 on Killer Freaks from Outer Space, a Wii U exclusive that was revealed at E3 2011, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Fanise went from doing audio work with Rabbids Go Home, a November 2009 Wii release, to doing "Pre production audio direction, Sound effects creation, Music and voice direction" on what is referred to as Killer Freaks - Wii U. Following his work on Killer Freaks, he left to head up Ubisoft Singapore's audio department on Ghost Recon Online and Assassin's Creed III, both also coming out on Wii U.

There still hasn't been a confirmed date for when Wii U was shown to publishers and developers, but it's possible that Ubisoft has been working on Killer Freaks in some capacity for nearly three years. We do know that Ubisoft has been working closely with Nintendo on the Wii U, as evidenced by last year's Nintendo-hosted Ubisoft developer spotlight.

Since the work done was all pre-production, the most likely scenario is that Nintendo discussed concepts of what the new system was going to be, and Ubisoft worked within some general parameters to create a new IP for the system while building certain assets, like audio, that wouldn't be altered because of the specifics of the control interface.

Supererogatory's follow-up to this LinkedIn profile's discovery was that it was likely a typo. That is likely not the case, considering that everything else Fanise has worked on seems to neatly fit around the work he did for Killer Freaks.

Well, then it should be a pretty polished game then.

I had heard that it started out as a PS360 game using Rabbids or something similar to that.

The team had grown tired of the rabbids and wanted to do something different, so Killer Freaks was born. Deformed scary versions of Rabbids we created and eventually the game moved to Wii U instead.

I can not source that info or remember where or when I had heard that, so I don't really know if what I just said was 100% accurate to what I had heard.

I just watched the Ubisoft demonstration of KFFOS, and I’m wondering if most of the exclusivity revolves around heavy use of the Wii U controller; but who knows, Ubisoft is really jumping on board with Wii U, which is great. And I realize this is an unfinished game from last year, but I just wasn’t impressed with the visuals. I primarily play Wii games so I don’t consider myself a graphics whore. When I play games like Galaxy and Skyward Sword, I’m used to seeing the console’s abilities pushed to the max. I assume Nintendo will continue this philosophy.  Is it wrong to want an experience on the first “next-gen” platform that isn’t possible on current consoles, at least visually (controller aside)? I’m not setting sky-high expectations for Nintendo’s E3 conference because I don’t want to be disappointed. I just want Nintendo and 3rd-parties show something on the Wii U, which will make all the naysayers choke on their own rage and ignorance. Nintendo already has an uphill battle in winning the hearts and minds of “gamers” who insist on comparing it to competing consoles that haven’t even been shown. As stupid as this may be, it’s a real problem that the gaming media will perpetuate.

THIS^

really you nailed it with that one. I hope that Pikmin is what shows off the Wii U's power as it is a first party game and the firt one still holds up today.
