Order Up!!

This retail-turned-digital 3DS game is almost ready to serve.

Last week on the eShop, Nintendo released the demo for Order Up!!, a game that started as a retail release in its debut on the system in Europe. Eventually, developer SuperVillain Studios decided to make the switch to digital distribution, and now the game is set to launch for $9.99 on June 21 exclusively on the eShop. We downloaded the demo to give it a spin, and are ready to serve up some fresh impressions.

The demo contains two modes: tutorial and quick play. The tutorial mode appoints you as the new chef of Burger Face Drive Thru, and takes you through the ropes of the position. Your pimply teenaged supervisor begins by showing you how to flip burgers, fry French fries, pour soda, and cut veggies. These actions are accomplished with simple stylus motions, such as a half circle to flip the burger, an upward or downward swipe to raise or lower the fryer, and horizontal swipes to peel lettuce leaves. These work just fine for the most part, but sometimes it's a little tricky to get the gesture just right. I occasionally had to tackle each gesture a few times, which was a bit frustrating. I expect this boils down to timing, which you might learn after playing the game for a while. When I spent a few hours with the iOS version of the game, I never had any problem getting the gestures right the first time.

After you finish the tutorial, the quick play mode lets you take full control of the Burger Face drive-thru window and take on as many orders as you like. The game shines when you try to manage multiple ingredients at once; drop the fries into the fryer and the burgers onto the grill while you chop the lettuce and tomatoes. Unfortunately, the demo doesn't let you tackle more than one order at once, but you get a taste of the type of gameplay the full game offers.

The game has a cartoon aesthetic, with egg-shaped characters and humorous writing. The tutorial mode is even fully voiced, and done well. The game has an impressive amount of content for an eShop release, and considering we've just seen the beginning of the game, I would hope this trend continues.

Order Up!! is coming to the eShop on June 21 for $9.99.

I played it over the weekend and the demo really didnt give me anything to look forward to in the full game.

I never played the iOS version, so i can tell you that if the game is really good(like the article says)... the demo does not do it justice.
