What does what and why.
The items of Animal Leader:
Grass - The small clumps of brown grass will restore a large amount of health when you touch them. They regrow after some time. When entering a tough boss battle, it's a good idea to know where several clumps of grass are in that area!
Attraction Hearts - These small squares with hearts on them are only used for mating. They do not contribute to your health at all. (See Grass, above.) Each heart you eat will add one to your hearts total, in the upper-right corner of the screen. The more hearts you have, the more females will want to mate with you, and the more choices of offspring you'll have. If you can accumulate 100 hearts or more before mating, you'll get bonus offspring choices that can extend over into the mixed-solid-color forms, which are particularly hard to get the normal way. If you ever have over 100 hearts when mating, your heart total will go down by 100 after that mating session. Otherwise, mating does not subtract from your heart total.
Mega Health Seeds - These yellow seeds have tiny green sprouts coming from the top. Your animal will also bounce them on his tongue a couple of times before swallowing. Unlike grass and other types of health boosters, the Mega Health Seeds can be stored and used when you're in an emergency. To use one, pause the game and press Z. Your health will fill up entirely, no matter how low it was before, and you'll have used up one Mega Health Seed.
Decoration Boosters - There are three types of decoration boosters. They all look like small gray boxes; one type has a crescent horn on the sides, one type has a circle, and one type has an X. The first will partially fill up your ear/horn meter; the second will fill up your tail meter; the third will fill up your scar meter. When each respective meter fills up, your animal will get an upgraded decoration of that type. Each decoration can be upgraded several times. There is no decoration booster item for the tongue; the only way to upgrade it is to pull on the wooden box tabs you find littered throughout the world.
