From the fierce to the fodder, the Animal Leader Menagerie!

Creatures of the Animal World

Flesh Colored Animals: These uniquely colored animals each differ according to hue. Each color has special characteristics, and their strength is indicated by their shade of color.

Plant Colored Animals: These are animals with heads and bodies made entirely of plants and grasses. They are timid, and pose little threat. Eating them replenishes a great deal of life.

Bugs: Primitive creatures of very little strength, they pose barely any threat. They are good fodder for fledgling hunters, and replenish a small amount of life.

Wild Bugs: These are unique bugs with markings on their bodies similar to the special flesh items (see Bosses). Eating them returns some of their accumulated wildness to the world. Some areas have landscape which has no color, and cannot be crossed. Eating a given number of these bugs returns the color to those areas, allowing you access to new area.

Attraction Bugs: These are bugs that are patterned with an attraction mark (a heart symbol). Eating one of these is equivalent to eating three normal hearts. If you have 100 hearts when you enter the Mating Grounds, your choice of offspring increases (see Mating).

Animals of the Wild

Along with various types of plants and lesser life forms, there are five general types of animals. The basic animal types Yellow, Red, Blue, Purple and Gray and within each animal type there are weak and strong animals alike, indicated as such by their particular shade of color. Each color group has three shades of animals, pale, medium and dark. Thus a pale yellow animal is much weaker than a boldly colored yellow animal.

Basic Color Types

Yellow animals possess strong tackling power, and when aided by a Bone item (see Bosses) their guard strength is the highest. They are the slowest of the five colors.

Red animals are excellent jumpers. They are the best at avoiding attack, and the fastest and most agile animals. However, they are also the weakest.

Blue animals can tackle from great distances, and are quick to charge up power before striking. They specialize in tackling from a distance, and use a lot of diagonal and horizontal movements.

Purple animals are great at backwards dashes, and their turnabout abilities are also excellent. Attacking and escaping, the hit and run, is their specialty.

Gray animals are the most powerful of the five colors. When aided by a Paw item, they are especially fast and agile. Both powerful and balanced, they are creatures to be feared.

Additionally, there are two special classes of creatures known as mixed color type and savage type animals. These are animals made up of one or more of the fourth color shade, solid. Whereas animal parts of the three main shades (pale, medium and dark) always have an animal pattern or print to them, solid shaded parts are pure, brilliant color.

The fourth class of animals, mixed, contains animals that are made up of solid color parts in various combinations, according to a progressive chart (available in-game when you reach that point).

The fifth, and most powerful beasts of all are the savage class, and are comprised entirely of a single solid color. Thus a six part, solid black animal is the most powerful creature in Doubutsu Banchou, outside of a boss.

The animals are arranged into groups according to number of body parts, color hue and color shade. The members of any given series (i.e. the dark grey animals of one to six body parts) are given similar names, such as Hole Punch, Stapler, Binder, Cover, etc. Some of the stranger series themes are different kinds of neck warmers, tape recorder functions and stages of human emotional development (such as puberty, teenage angst, etc.). We here at Planet GameCube have NO idea why.

There are 150 different types of animals, and thus transformations, possible. If you beat the Animal Leader and his lackeys, AND get all 150 transformations, you get the 'Complete Clear' end, and a super cool surprise!
