Wanna be the badest beastie on the block (pardon the pun)? Then you gotta have the moves...

Control Scheme Reference Card

Basic Controls

The pushing the analog stick makes you move.
When near an another animal or other potential target, press and hold the L button to target and build up tackling power.
While holding the L button, press the A button to tackle your target. If you hit, the amount of damage you inflict is displayed in green text. Should you be hit, damage inflicted upon you is displayed in red.
After reducing your prey to zero health, they will fall stunned to the ground for a short time. Target and tackle them again, and you will bite on to them.
Hold down on the analog stick to tear off a piece of your prey once you’ve bitten onto them. If you wish to release them after biting, press the B button.
In later stages of the game, you become able to tear off more than one piece of flesh at a time when you grow fangs. A single fang allows you to tear off two pieces, while two fangs lets you tear three.

However, sometimes you may only want to eat a single piece, at which time you must use Controlled Eating. After biting onto a downed foe, hold the X button before pressing down on the analog stick to bite off a single piece of flesh (whichever part happens to be between your teeth at the time).

Furthermore, before pressing and holding down on the analog stick to tear off your prey’s flesh, you can tap the stick downwards a few times to munch a bit and get a deeper grip on them, which ensures you will tear off as much flesh as you are able to (more useful after growing both fangs).

The start button pauses, and while paused press the Z button to use an Energy Ball (provided you have some, see Items and Screen Translations) to fully replenish your health meter.

Pressing the A button makes you jump.
When your health is reduced to zero, you fall to the ground stunned. Wiggle the analog stick and mash the A button like crazy to recover and get up faster, or a foe will tackle and bite you, tearing off a piece of flesh. If you are reduced to zero body pieces, you die.
Hold the B button to guard. If you have the Bone flesh item, you guard power increases dramatically.
Press the X button to dart backwards.

Holding the R button makes you dash when moving, if you’ve gotten the Paw flesh item.
Pressing the Y button once you’ve obtained the Threat Seed makes you cry out to threaten nearby animals. If they are more powerful than you, this has no effect. If they are somewhat weak, they will startle and pause for a brief moment.

If they are very weak, they will play dead, allowing you to pass unmolested or providing you with an easy meal. Also, other strong animals can threaten you with similar effect.

The C stick controls the camera.
Pressing the Z button makes you poop, allowing you to ‘discard’ the most recently acquired color in your body color scheme. Repeated defecation sheds further color. This is very necessary later in the game.
Pressing left and right on the directional pad allows you to cycle through your chosen offspring, for at-will transformation.

Holding up for a few seconds toggles the radar between automatic and manual display modes. In manual mode, press up to switch between full and local radar views.
