Yeah, but the point is that young people are being spoon fed crap from pretty people with plastic faces who pretend to be both musicians and gangsters (of which they neither). Normally teenage kids should be rebellious, but now they're gobbling up whatever some suits behind a glass desk decide to feed to them. I mean, everything is so cleanly run; it's disgusting.

hey im young and i hate freken all these crappy pop,R&B,robby williams and whatever. i like the old MC's,Jazz and Uk's band and some metallica.

the sad thing is, you see kids grouping and become gangsters and they dress up in plastic cloths and act stupied (no offence to any one here) but you see them with guns, standing up doing nothing, and you see them on the street as well playing foot ball, thats why soccer picthes are made for, to play on but you got these idiots doing nothing and some times playing on roads and shooting a gun and all because they want to be like Eminem and Jrule and other people.

if this is out of the subject please tell me (or at least take my suger straws away from me).

Robbie Williams is awesome.
One of the reasons why i like him is cause he released a totally different album to his usual genre of pop - Swing.
Swing When You're Winning is the album, and he did a damn well good job of it too, even better, dare i say, then Michael Buble, whom is also quite ok.
The songs were excellent remakes and new ones, and the DVD is awesome too.
I don't like ALL his songs, but the ones I bother to listen to are bloody fantastic.

I'm not gonna force you to like Robbie - just saying why I think he's great.

And I LOVE Queen. Well, the songs from the Greatest Hits album anyway.
I just keep coming back to Bohemian Rhapsody, Bicycle (

), Crazy Little Thing Called Love (which Michael Buble did a great version of) and Killer Queen.

Sure I find that there are still a few groups that sound good, but the numbers aren't nearly as large as my list of bands from the 70's...I consider that a hint that music is going downhill...Not to mention the corruption in the music industry(oh boy, Madonna and BS kissing!, Janet Jackson's breast!, etc...), I just find that the industry will continue to decline until something better arises from it...

ofcourse there isn't, i don't like anything on MTV either pretty much, but that doens't make the music wrong or the people who listen to it wrong either, two of PGC's favorite posters, Mario (award winning) and Termin8 (should have also won an award) both listen to pop music, does that make them stupid? make them lesser individuals? ofcourse not.

i really hate music angst, it's moronic.

I assume you're talking about me, although assuming may get me in trouble. But if you are, i'll just say this: I havent called anyone stupid for listening to anything i dont like. There is plenty of music i dont care for, but can respect . Then theres the music that sucks and is a group put together by a talent show, who get a record deal because of it-NO RESPECT. So if by saying i go back to the 60's and 70's to find good music, its not conceited, its a prefference. I dont like Dave Matthews in the least, hate his music even, but i will respect him as an artist. Same with Blink 182..i hate the music, but i'll never bitch about people liking them.

Wow.. A lot of good points have been brought up.

I'd first like to say that there will always be two sides to this, and maybe more. I just think respect for the art of music is lost, and respect for the popularity of the music has risen. Bill had an awesome point, about a downfall occuring and media propraganda that shouldn't be there. (like the kissing)

DarkSyphor, it's not at all that we are looking down on you. Your young and you learned to back away from that type of style. That's great! That shows that not every young kid is getting influenced the way everyone else is. It just seems to me that with your generation and the next to come, that the "If your friend jumped off the bridge, Would you follow" type of thinking when it comes to music. I say this becuase it seems from my point of view, that to be cool now you have to be "Ghetto'ed" out like Nelly, and look/act like a slut like Christinia. Come on, Younger girls are dressing in ways they shouldnt at their age. It's all for the clubs, something to dance too. I think what The Omen said too is very true. Just becuase we don't like that genre of music, doesn't mean we don't respect for them as an artist. It's just their style, but when they do all this just for the money, fame, and all that follows and not for the heart and art of the music... Well, That really bothers me. Also, With Old School Hip-Hop.. The Artist did do something. I know a lot of old school MCs that actually have built schools to teach. That is when these artist have actually came from a hard life. KRS-One is a very smart man who came from South Bronx with no parents. Now he has 16 albums from 1986-2003, Teaches at Yale and Harvard and Standford and other colleges for Black History and Philosphy, Has 2 Philosphy books, and owns a school and opened a "Temple of Hip-Hop" to respect all the artists before him, and after him. That's putting a lot back into the community.

I also strongly support on what Ocarina Blue had to say. To DrZoidBerg, Music with meaning IS still around.. but I think I was trying to get at that it isn't as around as it used to be. You do have good points though, as the two users listening to pop. Of course it doesn't make them less in any way. Maybe they will get teased in a friendly matter, but nothing more than that. At the same time, they do it back. It's not meant to be offensive towards the listener though, its towards the industry itself. I just don't think I should need to look harder than I already am to find good new music. It's all in your own taste though. It's silly to argue over something like this, true.. but music affects everyone here and thats why its such a strong subject.

I don't like MTV. I used to watch it because Daria was on, but then that just seemed to vanish, at least I think it did. I listen to music choice channels on tv which is nothing but music, and I have just about every genre available, except for videogame music. I don't think they have a channel for that yet.

Definition of irony:
In 1981 the music industry was stagnant. Radio station playlists were nothing but generic corporate trash formulated by focus groups and polling. Original content had no way of seeping into the average person's lives. Then a savior came down and introduced a new medium called the music video that jump started the careers of several acts and introduced whole new styles of music to a wide audience. That "savior" was MTV. A few years later the music played on MTV would gain mainstream popularity and since then MTV has been the authority on the tastes of the American youth mainstream. What had saved music two decades ago is now killing it.

I find that I just don't "get" today's music at all. I feel like an out-of-touch old fuddy duddy and I'm only 22. I SHOULD "get" this music. I graduated high school the year Britney Spears debuted. "Hit Me Baby One More Time" should in theory be my anthem. Most of the hip "artists" in the industry are the same age as me. Surely I should be able to relate to them and them to me.

But I don't. The last really great year for music for me was 1995. That was the last year where I liked 99% of everything released. And it isn't purely nostalgia either. I can go back and listen to nearly any of that stuff now and it's still Relevant and I still love it. Interestingly enough that's the year Lenny Kravitz sang "Rock 'n' Roll is Dead". I think I should ask Lenny for some lotto numbers.

I think one thing I really don't like about today's music is that it sounds very, very fake. Everything is very overproduced so nothing sounds like a real instrument anymore. Every song has all sorts of DJ stuff and sound effects thrown in. I'll accept that sort of thing to an extent in pop or rap music but not rock. Rock music is supposed to be a bunch of friends playing guitars in their garage. The only "fake" instrument that belongs in rock is a keyboard. No major part of the sound should require any studio trickery. If you can't play the song live with real instruments it isn't rock. I hear a song like "Numb" by Linkin Park and it sounds like it could be a song I would like. It has some good lyrics and the melody is pretty solid. Unfortunately it has all sorts of weird effects and looping vocals and whatnot. That just hurts the song for me. It's like a pretty girl who wears so much make up that she becomes ugly.

I personally think the music industry is in a slump right now (ie: low album sales which are blamed on pirating of course). This sort of thing happened in the late 70s and it happened in the early 60s during the post-Elvis pre-Beatles period. What the industry needs is some talented group to come out of nowhere and set a new standard. Bands like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, U2, Nirvana, etc all did this and the industry benefited because of it.

I think I should start playing my guitar more often and play with my friends more often. The opportunity is there for a band to grab the industry by its nuts. I just need a drummer. There's like no one I know with my music tastes that plays drums.

Britney Spears wouldn't have a singing career if it weren't for all the studio trickery. But then again we wouldn't have Enya if it weren't for her creative use of layering her voice the way she did. Britney can't sing without loud music to drown out her weak voice, which is the same for a lot of people. I like a lot of music from today, but I love the music from way back, from the 60's and 70's mainly, because back then you really couldn't rely so much on manufacturing a bad singer, into a good singer. I like Britney's songs, but she will never be a Judy Collins, no matter how hard they try.

Enya is spared from my hating solely because of "May It Be" from the Fellowship of the Ring soundtrack. Damn that's a great song. Plus I feel there is a difference between layering various tracks of one's voice to achieve harmony and doing the same thing to hide the fact you can't sing worth sh!t.

I don't know, maybe you guys didn't develop ears when you're were incubating inside your mother's womb, but Enya has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. Not to mention that, but her compositions and lyrics are beyond mortal comprehension. Seriously, if you're attacking Enya for making bad music, you're obviously intimidated by something that doesn't have a guitar blaring so loudly you have no clue what you're listening to. Maybe your standards are too high, in which case I'd laugh at almost any singer you'd place above Enya. I can understand if you don't like her style of music, but I can't see how you could possibly say she's not a very talented musician.

I don't attack Enya. I love her music. It's not boring Hostile, it's soothing and exciting. If it's either her vocal songs, or just the instrumentals, like "a day without rain" she always conveys a rush, for lack of a better word. Listen to Tempus Vernum and try and deny that the song is boring.

I don't hate MTV. I actually like it. They gave me The Maxx, Aeon Flux, and all their other toons. The Movie awards aren't that bad (Spike's VGA was just sad). Also the special they did on video games was awesome. The host was an EGM guy. Every now and then to do a special on some story that is actually interesting. I even like some of their shows better than these ridiculous reality ones. Although they went downfill from when I saw it a while ago. Right now I look at MTV and I hate BET more. Come on! BLACK star POWER! Yeah.... Dude just because of the past doesn't mean they deserve a channel thats all black. I mean the past is the past.

MTV's videogame show was dwarfed in irrelevance only by SpikeTV's videogame awards. As for the shows that MTV has brought to us (easily the best of which was Daria, one of the best cartoons period, in my opinion), I look at it this way- Fox was also the channel that brought us Family Guy and Futurama, but it doesn't mean I like them anymore than having a pencil shoved into my jugular.

I loved Daria, and Jane. It was a shame that it just seemed to vanish. I was surprised on day I was watching Beevis (sp?) & Butthead and saw she was in there, so I guess Daria was the spin-off of B&B, and also adopted a whole new animation look too. Daria had a very good sense of humor to the show.

What's even worse than the fact that MTV cancelled Daria is the fact that they refuse to release it on DVD because "there is not enough demand for it" (despite the fact that Undergrads has its own DVD release). Luckily they did have the common deceny to release both (excellent) made for TV Daria movies on DVD, although the soundtrack in the second one was altered because MTV didn't want to pay for the rights to the original soundtrack.
