I just watched MTV for a few minutes with a friend (I don't get cable), and in a span of two years, MTV's evilness has multiplyed. Even with TRL "The Death Star" losing popularity, a billion shows have rised to take its place in trashyness... The world is going down the drain! I liked how "School of Rock" had the anti-MTV stance, and even an anti-MTV ending, but I doubt to many pop-brainwashed kids listened.

I loathe MTV.  Power to VH1, man.  I love the 80s/70s/80s strikes back are some of ze best shows ever.

But VH1 is hardly music anymore anyway. . . more like pop culture.  Oh well.  I'll just listen instead of watching, I guess.

REally, I like just about any music that's done well, save for rap, pop, and country- I will not listen to any of that. Otherwise, I'm completely open, although I prefer ska over most other styles.

I've been done with MTV since about 1990.  New music sucks big time, although i've allowed certain groups to creep into my lineup.  But even my 'new' groups are 5 or more years old.  Go back to 1968, and start anew children, all the way through 1980.  Thats what i've done.  Theres a virtual jukebox of music you've never heard that f'n rocks.  I'm having fun discovering new/old groups.  Plus, you have an instant catalogue to dive into.  Great fun!

I've never watched MTV.  The whole thing just disgusts me.  As for tastes in music, anything.  I'm like MC, I'll listen to anything as long as it's well done.   I'll even listen to rap or country, although I *rarely* find a good rap or country song.  I do like some older underground rap, not like todays stuff.

Wasn't School of Rock made by Viacom (MTV's father/mother)? Anyways, I abhor MTV although their Lord of the Rings parodies as seen on the Extended Edition DVDs available at amazon.com etc etc are quite superb. I laughed through the entire skit on the Two Towers DVD. But that wasn't MTV's doing. Andy Serkis and his motion capture buddies are responsible for that gem.

Music is going down the drain. It's all really copied from another, nothing really new. I'll listen to anything besides Polka and Country. I'm a hardcore hip-hop fan, so I can't stand rap that comes out in the last past 5-6 years. I like Old-School stuff that is underground and concious. Jurassic 5, Dilated People, Public Enemy, Ice-T, and my favorite.. KRS-One (Who started in 1986). Hip-Hop used to have a lot of meaning to it, and wasn't about this stupid image that for some reason kids are growing up wanting. Music affects people, and with the newer music you can see the next generation is getting the wrong idea of the world. Rap now a days isn't real, it's all a make beleive world to make you look "Tough". These lil "thugs", blah. Other than that though, I love going back way before the 60s and listen to Jazz! I love me some jazz! Also, You can't hate 70s and 80s music.. although 80s Metal Rock and the whole mullet thing I never got. Pink Floyd and Grateful Dead. The Doors, and the Beatles. These groups had it all. Today's music industry needs to change!!! Currupt producers and companies, and poor commercial taste creates that disgusting POP music as we know it.  Example : Evil MTV currupting the next generation. Giving out false hopes and creating more stereotype then ever! Sad, Sad, Sad world.

I like a lot of music form today, more than I will admit to. Anything that sounds good to me is what I listen to, and that would normally be stuff from the Top 40.
And I mean top 40 from any period of time.
My music tastes are everywhere.

I watched a documentary about the 'creators of cool'. Channels like that see whats popular to the masses and market it to hell. Then they get popular. So THEY create what is cool, and market it to hell.

Seriously, music has been dying for a while. People might thing rap and RnB is here to stay, but it ain't. I can remember the times of Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer - most of today's teenagers can't. And are they still around?

I'm like Termin8, i like lots of music from today, if i enjoy listening to a song, that's all i care about, not who plays it and why or whatever. I enjoy listening to music on MTV, although i don't really watch like TRL and those other MTV "programs", i watch it when they're just playing music. Music is far from dead for me. I enjoy listening to "todays music", as well as old music, and also videogame music. Just whatever sounds good to me, i listen too. The end.

Well, in terms of rap, which relys on street credibility, its much harder to retain ones career when soon as you mature, youre labeled a sellout, AKA my main man Ice Cube.  I don't like any rap from the last 5 or 6 years, mostly because its all fake gangster wannabes who cant hold a candle to the originators, who weren't trying to be street, they were street.  Ice Cube, Ice T, Gangstarr, Naughty, KRS 1, Tribe, and PE is where its at.  POP music is what its always been-maufactured garbage.  There are different degrees of said garbage, but its garbage nonetheless.  Metal has totally gone south.  The last group that i picked up on was Korn, and that was 10 years ago for gadssake!  Theres always underground groups that you can get into, but for my money, i trek back into the late 60's, and all through the 70's.  Theres nothing better than starting new with a group and having 10 or so albums to explore.

I listen to a wide variety of music, but mainly rock, anything from geek to grunge to oldies to heavier rock.  I like rap, but it doesn't get to me the way rock does. . . I'll listen to if it's on, and enjoy it, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get it.  I cannot stand country.  Other genres generally appeal to me depending heavily on the song.

I'd list my winamp list, but it'd take too long.  74 songs. . . the majority of this particular list, though, is taken up by Red Hot Chili Peppers, System of a Down, the White Stripes, and the Flaming Lips.

I enjoy music.  Sometimes I'll just sit and listen to music and think, for a long time.  My current think song is Street Spirit by Radiohead.  Awesome song.

If it's good, I'm listening to it.

I have a nice variety of 70's/early 80's music, including The Beatles, The Eagles, Blue Oyster Cult, Jethro Tull, The Cars, ELP(Emerson, Lake, and Palmer), Kansas, Led Zeppelin, etc...

The only new-age groups I've liked enough to get a cd from them are Finger Eleven and Evanescence...

Other than Rock, I just listen to VG music and some Jrock/pop(Judy & Mary perhaps my favorite)...I can't stand any form of Rap, Country, or U.S. Pop

As for rap.. i dont like all rap, i really like Jay Z, Ludacris, Outkast.. and some others.. though. I don't hate whole genres of music, because there will always be at least one song that i will enjoy from every genre. Two of my favourite bands are Linkin Park and Outkast.

I listen to lots of videogame music and remixes too.

I'd rather not say what most of the stuff on my playlist is though, mostly pop/rock/rap songs

Hah. I agree with everything The Omen had to say. You guys need to realize when we say Music is dead, it's not that music itself is dead. I mean, Music can be found anywhere and is the bases of a mood. So, Music will be dead when human emotion doesn't exsist anymore. When we say, or at least I say, Music is dead.. I mean how the music business holds itself and how the performers go about their career. It's not as serious as it was years ago. Sure, their has always been curruption in the music industry. (Especially in the 70s) I also find that older music gets to your heart more than newer music. You know, Pink Floyd or the Beatles you can be touched by.. but listening to someone as to 50 cent or Limp Bizkit, is just something to pleasure your ears. It doesn't make it less of music, but it looses meaning. What's bad about this, and relates to topic, is that companies like MTV promote this kind of business/career style and push younger kids to be just like them. It doesn't teach anything bout individualism and finding yourself, but more about finding wants in your life that you that create false hopes. As for my Winamp lists, I have a 26 Hr Playlist of KRS-One songs (All different) and my 30 Hr Playlist of vareity of videogame music, (like Zelda, All the Final Fantasy, Chronocross and Secret of Mana, ect...) and then of course I have my playlist of Loiue Armstrong and Miles Davis and John Scofield. (Jazz) All my 70s/80s music is in my car, but I have a playlist that consists of all 70s Rock Legend bands which contains the obvious. (Bill has the right tunes!) Then occasionally I rock to trance and electronica when I play my RTS games online.

Yeah, but the point is that young people are being spoon fed crap from pretty people with plastic faces who pretend to be both musicians and gangsters (of which they neither). Normally teenage kids should be rebellious, but now they're gobbling up whatever some suits behind a glass desk decide to feed to them. I mean, everything is so cleanly run; it's disgusting.

I'm not trying to say that all musicians on the charts are lifless figureheads, but looking at them, I really can't help but feel most of them are.

Something that was previously an art, craft and science has been bastardised into some sort of money making machine. Ever since the end of WWII, has music been controlled by industry. It's arguably always been going downhill since then, but now it's ascended to a higher plateu of unrealism. What's really sad is that there are litleratly millions of virtuoso street musicians in many poorer countries, but no one gives a crap about them.

Don't know about anywhere else, but for the Aussies: Dick Smith is selling turntables with a USB port. You can finally rip all your records onto a omputer. Not bad, eh?
