you can't really be overpatriotic...your either ptriotic or not...well i guess you could be like some bum who talks nothing but about how they love their country and nothing else...but that may put you in a mental hospital....
i say if your going to be apart of a country you might as well take pride in it....if you hated your country...its kinda like hating yourself because afterall your a part of your country and if ou think its not great then in part its your fault.

Me and my friend were talking in a mcdonalds the other day we were joiking about stuff....i think i aid...all men are created equal eh? Na some people are better then others Sounds messed up but its true. Some people do well in their lives and some people screw themselves up.

Someone reported this as a political discussion.  I don't think I would really classify it as one. I'm keeping an eye on it, but so far you guys are having a fine conversation.

Oh one thing I'd like to add: Legally they don't force anyone to say the pledge.  Perhaps when you're in elementary school, your teachers might make you do it to keep you from being lazy and/or to instill a sense of patriotism, but if you honestly have something against saying it, you have the freedom not to.

Hey, give me a break here.  I used to sing it in French and English every morning from grades K - 3, but haven't sung it since.  I don't remember a single word of the French version, but I'll see how much of the English version I remember.  Cover your ears... eyes... whatever have you.  Grey Ninja is about to sing.

O Canada
Our home and native land
True patriot love
In all thy sons command
With glowing hearts
We see thee rise
Our... something...

O Canada we stand on guard
For thee
O Canada we stand on guard
For thee

Now I'll try the American anthem:

Oh say can you see?
By the dawn's early light
what's so proudly we hail
da da da da da
with blue stripes and white stars
la la la la la
la la laaaa la la laaa
la la la la la laaaa

Pothead national anthem:

Oh say I can't see
Where the hell's my visine?
and my eyesight's not so keen
I hope you're not driving
who's sack and new pipe?
we'll get f***ed up all night
and the weed's not stale
it's ok to inhale
get the munchies like hell
and we run to the bell
hit the bong one more time
then pass it 'cause it's mine

Oh say does that weed get me so hiiiiigh!
legalize it today
and get smoked out tonight!

That probably says a lot about my character right there.

The pledge of allegience sucks.

Not because it is offensive to atheists and various other nut balls (me be atheist, you be nut ball), but because teachers force you to say it without telling you you are signing a verbal contract to give your soul to the american government, that may very well be the devil, depending on your point of view.

My teachers never asked me if I wanted to allign myself with the american government, they just told me to do it.
Screw that.
Also, isnt this a democracy? "for the republic and something something" shouldnt that be: for the democracy and something something?

But whatever, dont make kids sign over their allegiance to something they have not been educated about first. And even after, give the kids a written document that states that the pledge is not a legaly binding contract.

I think the government assumes that if you don't support the country, indeed if you're against the country, you probably shouldn't be living here at all. And as Dan said, you dpn't have to say the pledge- elementary teachers just pressure you into doing it. You're protected under our 1st Ammendment and freedom of speech to not say it if you wanted, although you wouldn't be too popular of a guy if you did so.

Also, the pledge is not offensive to atheists- I'm an atheist myself, but there's only one line I don't agree with ("...under god...") and I just don't say it. The original Pledge of Allegiance didn't have that line in it at all- it was added by Eisenhower in 1956, I believe. I'm surprised it was allowed at all, considering it goes against our First Ammendment and freedom of religion, but basically it's the only line that I find offensive.

That pretty much summarizes the U.S. public, sadly(in response to Grey's song)... -____-

I think patriotism can be a good thing, but I'm not one to follow in pursuit of it myself...Perhaps it's just my dislike of government in general, or perhaps the fact that it tries to push it on us...If one is going to be patriotic it should be on their own accord, not off some tripe pledge...Geez, it's like the Red Scare never ended...

Well Grey you missed three lines but that's still better than most people.  You also know more of the American anthem than I do.  All I know is what Bleeding Gums Murphy sang at the ball game on the Simpsons.

I say the Pledge once in a while. They used to have us do it every Monday morning at school, but recently they stopped because of too many complaints by parents. Although, I think if you don't believe in God, then you don't have to say the Pledge, because it'd be almost like telling you that you had to pray even if you don't believe in God. The schools don't really force you to say the Pledge, which is why a lot of my friends don't.

I remember back in the day when the first ammendment didnt apply to kids, you know, because of the ****ty teachers. Do as your told! Otherwise we put you in a special class and get you on some drugs!

As for the shouldnt be living here if you dont like the country, screw that, thats against the first ammendment too.

But uh, schools suck. Somone should redesign the american school system, you know, by using science and stuff to find out the most efficent way of doing things. For example, large classrooms arent the problem, ****ty teachers are.

Australia doesn't have a pledge. They do have a national anthem though. We don't sing it too often though. So sorry, silverdonut, but I can't really help you there since I don't live in Australia. Im an aussie.

No, this is not really a political disscusion. It's not talking about politics or anything. Just about America's pledge of allegiance. I think you should be proud of it because it has to do with your country. Anything to do with my country I'm proud of, because it's my country, and I love my country so much. Australia rocks!
If you really want something in this life you have to work for it. Now quiet, they're about to announce the lottery numbers.

I am right 90% of the time. So why worry about the other 3%?

I pledge allegiance, to the flag
of the United States of America,
and to the rebuplic, for which it stands,
one nation, under god, indivisable,
with liberty, and justice for all.

I think that's it.  I should remember since we say it EVERYDAY.  National Anthem?  Here goes:

oh say can you see,
By the dawns early light,
what so proudly we hailed,
at the twilight's last gleaming,

who's broad stripes and bright stars,
through the perilous fight,
o'er the ramparts we watched,
were so gallantly gleaming,

and the rockets red glare,
the bombs bursting in air,
gave proof through the night,
that our flag was still there,

o say does that star spangled banner yet wave,
o'er the land of the free,
and the home of the brave.

I definitely think there's a ton of issues regarding the seperation of church and state that need to be dealt with, but not in a vigilante like matter (such as how the unconstitutionalism of the pledge of allegiance was brought to attention in California- that man gives atheists everywhere a bad name), and most are pretty harmless and not causing much of a problem. They should be solved in due course, but there's definitely more pressing matters at hand for the American government.

Speaking of which, isn't it convenient Saddam was captured right before primaries? But I digress, and I meant that purely in a humorous way- I don't want to turn this into a political flaming thread.

Sorry...  I just drank a whole lot of beer while screwing around with Apache trying to get it to list the contents of a directory.  I finally gave up on apache, but I still have the beer... sort of.  It's in my stomach.

back on topic....

mouse_clicker, I am not familiar with that story.  What happened?  I have always considered atheists to be far less dangerous than fundamentalist religious folk, and although I can understand why he would become so exasperated (sp?... not a word I normally spell) with the religious freaks, I don't think that they actually deserve violence.  Not lethal violence anyway.  But I am sure it's not like he started a "holy war" or anything.

Bah.  I take that back.  Atheists ARE far less dangerous than religious people.
