Master Chief design
« on: November 22, 2003, 03:45:46 AM »
mmkay, before i start i should point out i've never played the game of Halo, never played a demo, never seen it in action, i've only seen a handfull of screenshots and the boxart.

anyway, i just watched Starship Troopers (funny movie) and i noticed their armor and weapons look alot like the kit Halo frontman Master Chief wears, well... a fusion of the armor from the game DOOM and Starship troopers. has anyone else noticed this? and are there any similarities between starship troopers and the game of halo?

kinda an odd topic i know, but considering I won't be playing Halo any time soon (no xbawx and no plans on buying the PC version) i don't really have any other way of finding out.

i've always noticed the similarities between master chief's design the trooper from the original doom.  always figured it was a tribute or a rip-off, depending on your opinion of halo.  (i.e. if you like halo, it's a tribute; if you hate it, it's a rip-off.)

ROFL! Halo is a good game, but it isn't even close to being in the top one-hundred games of all time, and certainly is not the best game this generation.

There are at least 3 games I can name on the Gamecube that are much better than Halo, and several om the PS2 of the ones I own- Halo is a great FPS, but by no means the best game this generation. I know it's his opinion and whatnot, but that's like saying Syphon Filter was the best game last generation. :/

What's funny is how Bungie's devs gallivanted around the internet saying they were geniuses for their "story" and stuff, when anybody who read the Starhammer series of sci-fi books noticed a STRIKING similarity to Halo's things.  Almost as if they had facelifted the entire general ideas of Starhammer and Changed the names.  Halo's good, it is.. but crappy, nearly unplayable framerate during the end and trial-and-error lazy-ass game design makes me wonder why anybody thought it was so great in the first place.  Multi's fun tho.

Blegh, I hated Halo's multiplayer- I agree it's design wasn't that great, but it's singleplayer was incredibly fun, and I realy do count Halo as one of the best games this generation, just not the best game, not near it.

I still think Prime is the only one that matches it in quality, ED was a great game, but looked awful and had a far to simplistic combat style., and yo know my feeling on WW, I just dont see what all the fuss is about.

Y'know, the single player and story did not float my boat in the least, er, I mean, I thought they were both dull as a spoon. Co-op is fun, and I loved the multiplayer, because it was just so funny, y'know? I can't play very long with my friends without just busting out laughing at warthogs rolling over them and RvB catchphrases and all. That's why I like Halo.

(Yearg, get Doom2 on GBA if you want a good single player FPS olol)

glad to see you know so much more than everyone else Bill. Even though every gaming site immaginable said it was an excellent FPS, and many here who are die hard Nintendo fans even think it was a great game.
Have you even played it from beginning to end?

Bill,

You are the one posting your OPINION in such a way that it appears no other opinions are welcome, that is why it came accross as arrogant.

95% of gaming websites and puplication disagree with you, meaning your OPINION is the minority, and not FACT as you would make everyone believe., again this was the reason your post kinda pissed me off, it is nothing personal.

As for a newbie game, I am 33 years old and have owned damn near everything from the Vic 20 upwards., including every one of Nintendo's consoles. I also own all the current gen systems.
The differance is, I am not a NINTENDO only fan, I dont hate MS and SONY, where as you appear to have biases for both.

On a side note, I dont mean to pick on you, I just hate seeing people bash other systems when the reasons provided dont seem to add up. Also is your guitar a real Strat?

I happen to enjoy Halo, like millions of others. And personally, I don't see anything on the Cube that can match it, nor can anything on the PS2 match it. I think it's because Halo is a sci-fi first person shooter, and I have yet to see something that can compare to it. But, what I do find funny, is Sony is STILL trying to release a Halo killer. Which shows you that Sony is still living in the past. Nintendo, on the other hand, has moved on, and realizes they can't get a Halo killer, so they'll try and release more than one good game to try and topple the best Xbox game. Nintendo is taking the best approach when compared to Sony's, but I don't see either of them being able to get a Halo killer out.

If by Halo killer, you mean FPS, you might be correct.  If you meant any game, then there are plenty of games on the 'cube that surpasses it.

I personally did not enjoy Halo because I cannot play FPS's.  Moving and the turning at the same time gives me headaches.  I played a 5-man deathmatch at my friends house once, and had to go out for some fresh air after only 10 minutes of play.

I loved Metroid Prime though.  Even though it has a First-Person view, I only occasionally experience headaches.  The reason is because Samus cannot move and turn at the same time. Oh well....

I am a huge fan of HALO and even I find your post disturbing to say the least.

"and personally, I don't see anything on the Cube that can match it, nor can anything on the PS2 match it. I think it's because Halo is a sci-fi first person shooter, and I have yet to see something that can compare to it."

Metroid Prime was a sci-fi shooter in many regards, and from everything I have read, it recieved nearly identical marks in its critical reviews. So I would say, it does indeed have competition from the cube, personal preferances aside.
See the problem here is your comparison. When you look at the Cubes target audience, you will find very few FPS fans. As far as many here are concerned Zelda, Sunshine and ED, are all HALO killers, I personally may not agree, in many cases, sales tell me they are correct.

As for the PS2, GTA3 and VICECITY are not only HALO killers, they are console killers. When GTA3 came out for PS2 and being exclusive for as long as it was, it not only killed HALO, it guarenteed SONY 1st place in the generation without a challenge. All Vice City did was pour gas on an already raging fire.

"But, what I do find funny, is Sony is STILL trying to release a Halo killer. Which shows you that Sony is still living in the past. Nintendo, on the other hand, has moved on, and realizes they can't get a Halo killer, so they'll try and release more than one good game to try and topple the best Xbox game."

This is very funny, SONY has at least 10 titles on its console that have sold way better than HALO. As for NIN, I doubt they ever gave a rats ass about HALO. PLease read the my last paragraph again as it sums this all up.

"Nintendo is taking the best approach when compared to Sony's, but I don't see either of them being able to get a Halo killer out."

Only true X-box fanboys, even think that anyone is still trying, let alone needs a  HALO killer. The game is 2 years old and untill HALO 2 comes, will matter NONE in what the console are currently doing.

ALl this from an X-box owner and a huge halo fan. I just couldnt help but point out just how off base you really were.

By Halo killer I did mean in the FPS genre, sorry, I should have specified that. MP may be classified as a sci-fi shooter, I'm pretty sure a lot of people will agree that playing single player gets boring, and multiplayer would have made the game even better.

I'm not saying the Grand Theft Auto games haven't outsold Halo big time, but the truth is, like I said previously, after awhile, single player gets very boring. Not to mention, comparing GTA to Halo would almost be like comparing swimming to basketball. They're completely different.

If one was to look over the entire picture, this generation's FPS have been somewhat a general disppointment. When compared to last gen level design has not improve and in some cases regressed. Sure they are biggers, flasher now, but mostly lack thought. Halo with it's canyon back tracking and overly linear level design to timespliters medicore single and lack of any real varity of weapons which also holds true for Halo which is even worse. People love TS2 multi, but compared to what was done before in PD, it is lacking. No custom AI sets, not dizzying, no head swapping(Ok, maybe not tis one), no slow-mo, unbalanced weapons, hell, blood would have been nice. Halo lacking Bots in itself was a bad call with no way to play around with weapon groups and options in general.

It's a bad generation for console shooters when Halo is the best. Horribly unpolished, and equally overrated.

"...I'm pretty sure a lot of people will agree that playing single player gets boring, and multiplayer would have made the game even better."

It's funny because I feel exactly opposite to that notion. The single player is great, and multi would just ruin it. It wouldn't be Metroid.
