Metal Gear Solid – PC demo
« on: June 03, 2003, 04:43:38 AM »
No kidding.  With a remake coming to Gamecube, it reminded me that I had a PC demo of MGS from the Christmas 2000 issue of PC Gamer magazine.  Which sadly, I never tried out.  I ignored the game back then because I wasn’t into console games at the time (a big mistake).  So I went thru my collection of 117 PC Gamer CD demo discs (I counted β€˜em!) on the shelf behind me.  At last, I found it.

I’ve finished the demo twice and enjoyed it, although it was short.  I’m doing it again on hard.  Using the keyboard does feel somewhat awkward.  But what I like about the game is that it makes you feel that you are playing in an action movie, although some of the time I felt I was being interrupted by codec too often, instead of just letting me play.  The character models look weird, I mean, they seem to have no eyes.  And the voice acting is good.  I liked some of the conversation between Snake and the Asian chick (can’t remember her name).  Now I can’t wait for the GameCube remake, and I am thanking Nintendo and Konami for making this possible.

To the big MGS fans on this forum, I ask you to forgive me for not trying out the MGS PC demo long ago.  I beg of you!

Heh... I didn't know that a demo even existed.  I looked for one a long time back, but I couldn't find one, so I just bought the full game.  How much of the game does the demo cover?  I know that the controls feel awkward on the keyboard, but I have a Dual Shock plugged into one of my USB ports, and it feels great with the controller that it was intended for.  The character models weren't that great as they were intended for the PSX, and the PSX couldn't handle polygons that well.  Still, if you look at the PSX and PC versions side by side, I think that the PC version is the superior one in terms of graphics.

And yes, Mei Ling is loved by all.

The orginal Metal Gear Solid is a PlayStation game. Metal Gear (no Solid) is the NES game.

The demo starts at the very beginning of the game and ends after Snake and the girl (don't know her name yet, but she was in the prison cell before changing into the guard clothing) blast all the guards.  It's only about 50MB.

And yeah, I like Mei Ling.  I liked it when Snake says she was cute, and she responsed "I can't believe I'm being hit on by Solid Snake"...hehe

LOL...I remember reading a PC (or maybe console) review of the game, the reviewer said didn't Konami realised that Solid Snake sounded like a sex toy?

Well, that's a good chunk of the game.  Not enough to get REALLY cool, or even to meet the first boss, but it's enough to whet your appetite and have you hungry for more Snake.    But yeah, the whole game has some serious homo-erotic undertones.  If you listen to some of the audio without looking at the screen, it's quite "interesting".

The part where Snake is in the holding cell comes to mind.  If you listen to the part where Otacon shows up, the words sound quite suggestive.

Also, humping the guards in MGS2 is some of the most fun I have ever had in a video game.    I am very pleased that Snake is going to have that ability again in MGS: TTS.

Hey, how do you snap a guard's neck?  And then drag him off and snuff him out?  Because I can't work out the controls to do it.  I use the spacebar button for action.

I can get Snake to put his arm around a guard's neck from behind, and knock him out cold for a few seconds, but what do I press to snap his neck?

In case you were still wondering...  when you have your arm around the guard's neck tap the action key to break said guard's neck. You can't drag them off in MGS1, they added that in MGS2.

Just thought I would mention that I found a link for the Metal Gear Solid Trial if anyone else wants to try it out.

As for dragging a guard, you can do that if you grab the guard, and choke him whenever he resists.  As soon as he dies though, it's over.

Zenhoshi - Thanks for that.  I've still got the demo on the PC and will try it out!
