Project P-100 Impressions

I'm not exactly sure what I played, but I think I liked it.

Project P-100 is one of the few things on display at Nintendo’s booth that we weren’t expecting. From Platinum Games, this title has you in control of a mob of heroes as you fight against giant robots and collect friendly people along the way. The game features a lot of touch control, but everything I saw could also be done with regular old physical controls.

As I mentioned, in this game you control a group of people, which will grow over the course of a level, as you take on enemies that are usually much bigger than your heroes. I got a bit of a Pikmin vibe from this mechanic, but that might just be because I’ve had Pikmin on my mind all day.

There are various attacks mapped to the face buttons, with X being your standard attack and A being a stronger one. Once you build up power you can execute more powerful moves, which are activated by gestures on the touch screen, or, if you prefer, by doing the same gestures with the right analog stick.

Some of the time I felt like the game was a bit confusing, as I wasn’t always sure whether an attack landed, and the action can get pretty hectic with as fast paced as the game can be and with how many people you have to pay attention to.

I came away from the demo with a positive opinion of the game, though, and I think it’s one to watch out for. There are a few bits that don’t feel quite right, but they still have time to fix them, and I look forward to seeing more about this game.

From the brief glimpse we've had of this game, it's probably the announced Wii U game I'm most excited about.  I love the visual style.  I was reminded of the town in Earthbound: a very clean, bright, and cheerful looking urban environment.
I got hooked on the white stuff back in the 70s.

I liked it a lot, and my opinion of it would be higher if it hadn't had an actual Pikmin game, the series it is clearly somewhat inspired by, going up against it at the show. Definitely the biggest surprise of the show, and also definitely something people should be looking into quite a bit. This really should have been in the press conference.

Now that I have a better grasp on what the hell is actually going on in this game, it would definitely seem to be one to watch. I hadn't heard that this is a collaboration between Kamiya and Inaba, but I now realise that makes perfect sense - this feels much more like a Clover project than a Platinum project, if that makes any sense. It's crazy, of course, but not in the same way that Madworld, Bayonetta, Vanquish etc. are crazy. Nah, there's more in common with Viewtiful Joe and Okami, and that has me very interested.

I didn't like it in the trailer when they zoomed way in on the people and they were all low polygon. I realize the game is played from a distance, but this is one case where the should have made a pre-rendered cartoon.

It could be an early build so they may not have gone through the polish phase.

You won't notice it in motion even if it doesn't change. We're a long way from the point where you won't be able to find rough bits like that if you zoom in and take it slow; it's a question of how well you can hide it, and I thought this game looked quite good.
