Ubisoft's Rayman Origins Becomes Profitable
« on: February 21, 2012, 11:03:58 AM »

The 2D platformer finally earns Ubisoft some money.

Rayman Origins has finally become a profitable game for Ubisoft, the company revealed to investors during a conference call earlier this week.

Rayman Origins released in November 2011 and was met with small sales numbers. NPD reports the game only sold 50,000 copies in its first month. However, Ubisoft claims the game "has the capacity to become a long-term seller for the company." There was no official sales data revealed.

Rayman Origins releases on the Nintendo 3DS on March 20. You can read our review of the Wii version here.

All profits are deserved.  Origins is a great game, so hopefully it sells (relatively) well for months to come.

This is good to hear after how critically acclaimed it was. I've been waiting all along for the 3DS version, and am excited to get a chance to play it.

Unfortunately, it probably isn't a good sign that it took 3 or so months for the game to be profitable, so I doubt that we'll be seeing another one anytime soon.  I hope they do make another, though, because I'm really interested to see what Ubisoft does with that engine now.  I'm about halfway through Rayman Origins, and (while it took me a little while to warm up to it) I can say it's easily one of the best platformers this generation.  I just wonder how much more quickly the game could have turned a profit if the game was priced at $30-$40 or less to begin with (which is probably where this game saw most of its sales).

Bought the Wii version last week, going to play it after Skyward Sword.

I held off on the game since I figured it would drop in price pretty quickly. Hopefully Ubisoft's statement means they are still producing it, and I'll be able to get a copy on the cheap at my leisure.

I actually just started this one last night, after finishing up Skyward Sword this past weekend. I think Ubi's big mistake was releasing this game during the Xmas holidays against some heavy competition. If it had instead released the game in January or February (like most of us probably did), it probably would've done much better. And I agree with Broodwars, a somewhat budget release in the $30-40 range would've spurred sales even more (I know I certainly didn't hesitate to pick it up when TRU dropped it to $20 during last month).

Actually, since they've got the street cred now, they could probably see a much quicker turnaround on a sequel. I think Origins sold so poorly because the Rayman franchise has been largely thought of as Rayman 2 ports and Rabbids games.
