So How Many Xbox 360s Do I Need to Duct Tape Together?
« on: January 25, 2012, 07:27:39 PM »

Math is hard.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/blog/29076

So I'm trying to get this all straight.

  • There's a rumor out there that says the Wii U will be 2x as powerful as the Xbox 360.
  • There's another rumor that says the Xbox "720" will be 6x as powerful as the Xbox 360.
  • That same second rumor says the Xbox "720" will yield 20% (or 1.2x) greater performance than the Wii U.

Using the Xbox 360's "power" as a base of 100 that means:

  • The Xbox 360's power = 100
  • The Wii U's power = 200
  • The Xbox 720's power = either 600 or 240!?

So which is it? The Xbox "720" can't be both 6 times as powerful as the Xbox 360 and 20% more powerful than than a device that is only 2 times as powerful as the Xbox 360. Either somebody screwed up their math, or at least one of these rumor sources is talking out of their ass.

I hope somebody is talking out their ass because if not then Nintendo is further behind the technological times and is in bigger trouble than I originally had thought it may have been if at all.

I don't think so KITT, the rumored chip that the Xbox 3 will use just came out last year and is still pretty expensive ($80). The system won't come out anytime soon, and will be expensive. From all the reports we have seen, Wii U will be a very powerful system, so no need to worry.

Well the Wii U is going to be more powerful than the 360/PS3. That's for sure. But not very much more powerful. That's the problem. Nintendo is putting themselves into cycle that is half a step out of sync with Sony and Microsoft.

The Wii U is only going to be a half a generation ahead of the 360/PS3. A few years after the Wii U comes out, there will be new systems from Microsoft and Sony that are a full generation ahead of the 360/PS3 and half a generation ahead of the Wii U.

Of course this is at least better than the Wii strategy, which was to release a system half a generation BEHIND the competition.

It's elementary my dear Watson.

First, you take the xbox 360's power x 2 = Wii U
Then, xbox 720 is 6x power more powerful than the 360
So, you have to take the 720 and divide it by 20%, so now your at 144
Take the 144 and minus the -360 since you will have sold your 360, so you're at -216
Now take the -216 and multiple it by 2 because that's how many Gamecubes make up a Wii
Now you're at -432. There are 3 systems next generation so multiple it and now you're at -1296
Then you take out the - because my wife is yelling at me to stop and I need to get to a positive number.

So your answer is 1296. Next question?

If I recall correctly, the source said there is no Next Box development kit. As such, he or she is inferring the power based on specifications. Even if he has access to this document, it is all speculation at this point. Whatever is the true graphic power of the Wii U and the Next Box, they will be both limited to the 1080p, 60 fps of the current TV sets (no way 4K TVs will be popular in the next decade) and, as such, I doubt there will be much difference in these consoles in terms of graphics. The Wii U will be characterized by its tablet whereas the Next Box by Kinect's integration. Sony, I guess, is undecided in which company they will copy.

judging a system by raw power is archaic and overdue, the wii is proof of that, as long as nintendo keep making games, and have the raw intelligence to give developer what they want, the WiiU is going to succeed no matter what, cause the current HD era and by that i mean maximun resolution of 1080p is here to stay for at least 4-5 years, so game consoles in terms of graphics is not going beyond that.

I think it's closer to 20% in general terms.  The 6x figure probably was based on an idea of just clock cycles or polygon count, which isn't the best judge by itself of a systems performance.  There's other system resources like HD resolutions that have to be taken into account.

Maybe if it's gonna run PONG it'll be 6x as powerful

Not to ruin the fun but I can explain Develop-Online's confusing story.

They had a source who last year said that the Wii U (based on dev kits) was 2x the power of the X360, but they could not confirm that due to NDA's and such.
Word as of sometime last week or so was that Final dev kits had finally come out and that there was an unexpected bump in power from the previous dev kits and the "final" one that just came out.
The same source that told them "2x a 360" last year said that they "final" dev kits, that just came out, were much more powerful than previous kits, which happens to line up with what IGN's source had said of 20% less powerful than the X720 which was 5-6x more powerful than the X360.

Well, if the XBox 420 is only 20% more powerful than the Wii U we'll see a repeat of the PS2 situation where games are made for the weakest of the systems and then ported to the rest.

Assuming all these rumors are true, with the Wii U being the first system released and with comparable hardware that makes it the lead development platform, this is shaping up to be a really good hardware generation for Nintendo. That's a lot of big assumptions, though.

Figures dont lie but liers figure.
The DSi's cpu is twice the speed of the DS, but no one used that power, was it
real or in real world on paper?
Power is a factor of many things, the XBX was suppose to be way more powerful then
the GC, yet Factor 5 said you can do anything on the GCNthat you can do on the XBX
with enough work. so power isnt just numbers but how easy is it to get that potental
and will the effort be recognized by anyone but tech heads.
Dont worry, Nintendo will be fine

Probably too good to be true, but I would be pretty jazzed about this outcome. I had to break down eventually and get a 360 to catch some things that just weren't going to come out on Wii in any form, but I would be pleased as punch to go back to being a one-console man. And it could be better than previous leading consoles, in that software exclusivity from third parties is going extinct. I really had no urge or necessity to get a PS3 given that at this point the 360 has 95% of the same software. Uncharted, Resistance, and Electro Guy were just not nearly compelling enough on the face of things.

But imagine: playing everything on a Nintendo console again! Link in Soul Caliber VI! Wario in Grand Theft Auto!

Honestly I doubt it's much cheaper to go with a 360-level system instead of a next gen one as both are pretty much on the bottom end as far as PC hardware is concerned (yes, the 420's rumored specs are considered weak for a PC but then again ALL consoles are weak compared to contemporary PCs on a pure number basis) and I doubt IBM and ATI even offer such low end solutions anymore.

I imagine that the rumor of the 720 being only 20% more powerful than the Wii U to be more accurate, mainly due to Microsoft's greater focus on Kinect for it. Plus, the prior rumor of the Wii U being 2x more powerful than the 360 could have been based on prior demonstrations last year of the unit, to which is not the same now as it had been evolving this entire time.

I dunno, there were rumors of both kinds with the Wii. We'll see what Nintendo will do but if they went HD with the goal of getting third party support then it's likely that they've been upping the specs to make sure they don't lose it the next time the other guys release consoles.

Well if you are using IGN as the source of these more powerful figures. I think that the 2X more power came from their assumption that it was using the R700 architecture, now they have changed the rumored architecture to the RV770. (I'm using the GPU because that is what is being called 6X more powerful in these rumors.) Which would  be a "more powerful" GPU then the original rumors.

One a side note dealing with rumors as the only "concrete" information can make ones head spin anyways.
Stupidity is lost on my. Then again I'm almost always lost.
