Update: The upgraded system firmware with the eShop will become available in North America during the evening of June 6.

Update 2: Nintendo of Europe has confirmed that they will also be releasing the 3DS update on June 7.

The Nintendo 3DS eShop launch has been delayed to June 7 in Japan, according to a note posted to the company's Japanese website. The launch was originally set for May.

The launch will be in the form of a system update which, according to previous word from Nintendo, would also include the 3DS Web Browser.

June 7 is the opening day of E3 2011. Nintendo’s media presentation will be held that morning at 9:00 am PST.

Why do I get the feeling that this was done to update the security measures after the whole Sony PSN fiasco? That, or maybe they want more games at launch.

Note that it's now confirmed to be June 7 JAPAN TIME.

nintendo.com says it'll come in the evening of June 6, Pacific time. So it'll be done when the press conference starts.

Let the rumors of livestreaming in 3D to the 3DS commence.

streaming atleast the 3DS portion of the conference in 3D was my main reason for the thought.

& could Nintendo follow Obama's lead in kicking a man when he's down* by releasing the 3DS eShop update during Sony's E3 conference on the 6th?

Well, it's not THAT much longer after late May. It would be cool if they took advantage of the situation and do that 3D streaming thing.

It's nice to see Nintendo continue to validate my decision to not purchase a 3DS at launch (if ever).

But yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo is being cautious and beefing up their security on the eShop just in case the PSN hackers get bored.

If Nintendo were to have the conference viewable on the 3DS I would expect that only the game footage would be in 3D. Footage taken in the Nokia Theatre would likely be 2D since Nintendo would need to pay for 3D cameras and a separate 3D crew to film the live proceedings. I believe that live broadcasts of sports games and other events usually have a different set of cameras for 3D and 2D.

I somewhat doubt that Nintendo will have the conference livestreaming on 3DS, but wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo offers downloadable 3D trailers of Super Mario 3DS, Mario Kart 3DS, and others once the conference is over.

Another week to stock up on 3DS cards!

Although I wonder if there will even be $20 worth of 3DS stuff on the eShop at its launch. (DSiWare notwithstanding)
It amazes me that we still don't know the prices of anything!

Not cool. Not only do I have to wait longer but also Nintendo's E3 presser is going to devote valuable time to explaining the 3DS VC. All I want is Super Mario 3DS and Cafe! So what odds would I get on Reggie saying "And it's available...[points with both hands to the floor] right now! [smug grin. applause].

I, unfortunately, know what you mean, I seldom play my 3DS. Waiting for the eshop and OOT! Pilotwings is great and all but I've played it to death!

I still play my 3ds everyday. I am really close to beating find mii !!!!!! Pointless I know but its addicting since I can only play so much every day.

Well I'm hoping that the delay will make eshop and web browser better experiences.

My 3DS rides in my pocket all day earning that max amount of coins. Thats about all it does.
I'm wondering if E3 was a hard deadline for the shop and this is it getting pushed back as far as it can be. It ....loading.... better not be .....loading... like the .....Loading..... Wii .....Loading...... sho... Error. That is a horrible piece of junk that can make any programmer at any level cringe.

In previous E3 has Nintendo setup a Demo Station for the DS and allow you to just pull it to your DS and play it?

My heart sank at hearing the delayed date, particularly because it seems to just be a PR move only. Since it has taken so long, I really hope that the browser, eShop, etc. are polished. A nice surprise would be Youtube 3D compatibility, since that's where the bulk of 3D video is.

The fact that the eShop is now launching less than 24 hours before the Nintendo press conference at E3 suggests to me that it might actually be getting its time in the limelight during the 3DS portion of the conference, which never really happened for the Wii Shop or DSi Shop. Maybe details on 3DSware, Virtual Handheld and the video service will be divulged; essentially, the message would be "Here's your online store, now here's what you have to look forward to on it."

This for me too. Played the snot out of Pilotwings and was done with it after two days. Tried really hard with Steel Diver but it isn't very fun. I think Street Fighter IV is a great game it just isn't for me. I'll occasionally drop in on +Cats but only for about fifteen minutes at a time. It's not even worth me putting my 3DS in my bag because it's only ever found another user once and that was in A busy shopping centre. There's just no reason at all to use the 3DS at the mo.
My DSi is still getting mad love though. Currently playing Ghost Trick (so good) and I have a stack of other games to play. Feels weird having the future collect dust but that's the way it is.

Well, the eShop's been delayed a week (after the end of May) and I'm not as disappointed as others seem to be. Partly because we were never given a hard date to begin with on when it was coming out (which leaves me to believe that Nintendo had this date already planned from the beginning.) The implications of them releasing during E3 will hopefully mean a better conference experience for us early adopters in the form of possible live streaming, 3DS demos, and game trailers.

Also, I don't think it's a mistake that the release of the eShop and other as of yet to be announced features on the 3DS will be occurring on the day of Sony and Microsoft's press conferences. As was stated above, this delay was also undoubtably part of a PR strategy to steal thunder away from any potential NGP announcements.

I'm quite curious and even more excited now for the reveal in about 3 weeks.

Im a Nintendo fan, but folks, lets not get our hopes up.
this is the company that has made a living from the bare minimum.
Chances are the delay is all "security/backend stuff" and we the consumer
will be looking for the delay reason.
to be honest, im suprised it will have netflix streaming.
im assuming netflix did all the work there.
dont look for anything big , that way you wont be disappointed.
