well know nothing, u certainly live up to ur nickname. hehe jk dude. well, there arent any unlockable characters, but u could unlock old snes levels. as for why all the levels are flat, it was like that in the original mario kart. the hills and stuff arent really needed when u have brilliant level design that u are supposed to try to beat. i dunno, u may just like hills. i mean, i like guys, and im a guy. lol i joke i joke. i really liked this game. try getting all Stars for the rankings baby! im sure many people got the double starr thingy though. sigh. cant wait till mario kart double dash comes out though. i hope they add a battle mode where u can go against computers. i wanna battle!

I think that if you started playing Mario Kart on the N64 the SNES and GBA games won't be as enjoyable.  I have friends who are in love with Super Mario Kart, but I can't play it for more than ten minutes without getting bored outa my skull.  I expect it was because I played it on the N64 first.  It really is a totally differant experiance.

Speaking of the unlocking the SNES levels, I've been having a hard time doing so.  I've read a couple of FAQs and none of them reach a consesus about how to do it. Some say you have to get 100 coins, other say you need an A rating (surprisingly, these don't necessarily go hand in hand).  Some say you can unlock them for each speed level and each individual cup... others say you need to unlock them as a group.  A few FAQs mention how to access a special screen where these levels are displayed (L or R buttons, I believe), and others just say these levels pop up.  I am so confused!
So far I've gotten 100 coins, a gold trophy, and a decent ranking (C or above; one A) on all of the cups in the 50cc speed setting (I just got a SP, so I'm new to the GBA) ... and nothing has unlocked the SNES tracks!!! Does anyone know any details about this and can help me out? I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Hmm, I don't know either. I just got the game last week and assumed you had to place first in all of the cups to open up the SNES tracks. I'll probably know today because all I have left to do is the 150CC Special Cup. I've gotten first in everything else. If it's tied to your ranking I'll have a ways to go. Most of my rankings have been E's. I'm glad they put the ranking in there because now I'll have something to go back to once I beat it.

I started playing this series with the original SNES version. I thought it was great and looked forward to the N64 version. Upon buying that one, it is fun but something is missing I think. It was just too easy, even on the hard levels. I like the GBA version because it seems to go back to its roots and the challenge is definitely there. I'm looking forward to the Cube version.

To unlock the SNES levels, you just need to get 100 coins in that cup in Mario GP mode.  You don't even need a trophy.  As long as you get 4th or better in all the tracks, which you need to get past a course anyway, you'll unlock the track.

Oh, and Mario Kart 64 was my first Mario Kart.  I liked the GBA one, but not as much as the N64 one.
Until next time, everybody, do the Mario!

Thanks Chiphead... I've gotten over 100 coins on a lot of the individual cups (and even placed first overall) on a lot of tracks... are there any other details that you're missing? Where do the unlocked tracks appear? What screen?

I first choose Mario GP, then I choose a speed setting (let's say 50cc since those are the tracks I've gotten over 100 coins on), then I choose a character, then I choose a cup that I've gotten over a 100 coins on... but I don't see any SNES tracks!!

I'm sorry if I'm being a pest about this, but this is really perplexing me... I think I'm just missing something minor.

Thanks!

PS: To make this more relevant to the thread, I'll throw my 2 cents in about the different versions. I first played the SNES kart and absolutely loved it... the track design was truly excellent.  The N64 version was also amazing.  While it was a lot easier, I felt that it gave me more for my money because I was able to play all of the included tracks (I never saw some of the final tracks on the SNES).  I think that the GBA version is a perfect blend of the two.  I like the new sprites and I really like the added strategy of the offensive/defensive weapons (dragging items to block, and the three-shell items).  I think that the GBA version is the best that one could hope for on the GBA. I don't think the GBA has the power to do 3D objects well in a racing game.  The game runs so smooth, the music is great, the backgrounds are nice... I wouldn't sacrifice all of that for a few hills and 3D jumps.

My only gripe about the GBA/SNES versions are the coins... but it adds a bit more strategy and a lot of replay (with the rankings system). I really hope that the coins don't show up in the new GC version... having to worry about driving, using weapons, switching drivers, AND picking up coins would be a bit much.  What I would like to see is the inclusion of coins as an alternative mode in gameplay, similar to the rings mode in Mario Golf, Mario Tennis and the coin mode in Super Smash Bros.: Melee.

Okay, I got the gold trophy in all the cups and it didn't open up anything as far as the SNES tracks. I went back to the 50CC Mushroom Cup (or whatever the first on is) and played it over. I got an A ranking with 162 coins and this opened up the 50CC Mushroom Cup SNES tracks. It definitely depends on your coins because the screen was flashing new tracks and 162 coins at the same time. Maybe you have to get 150 coins to open it up. I then played the next cup on 50CC and got a * ranking...my first one! I think I had 174 coins...it opened up the SNES tracks.

Whenever you go to choose your tracks the option to choose new tracks (SNES tracks) will be given. You just push L or R to access them.

i know i'm the one who started this, bu ti'm pretty sure you have to get over 100 coins in each cup to unlock the special cup.  but that's a total of 20 courses, i heard there were 40.  i'm guessing that means mirror images of each course, or are there only 20?

I think the Snes levels are what counts up to 40.  Unlike most of you guys, I played Mario Kart for the Snes and I loved it.  Whne I got it for Nintendo 64 I liked it even more, but I still came back to the Snes game after a while, its just too fun.

Alright, well first to unlock these tracks you need to obtain a Gold Trophy and at least 100 coins on any Cup to unlock its corresponding SNES Cup.  Ok, tracks:

-Ghost Valley 1-3
-Bowser's Castle 1-3
-Choco Island 1,2
-Koopa Beach 1,2

-Rainbow Road

(20 tracks in all)
