New Metroid: Other M Trailer

The story-focused trailer shows off Samus' voice.

Nintendo released a new Metroid: Other M trailer that is comprised of cut-scenes that show off the heroine Samus Aran talking about how she feels, and how she is young and naive.

This also gives fans a chance to hear Samus' much talked about voice acting, which has been the main source of criticism for the upcoming game, which is set for a June 27 release in North America.

I'll break from the chorus and say the voice acting doesn't bother me, I don't think it's that bad.

After all, it could worse:

Samus' voice doesn't sound bad to me, it's emotionless, but purposefully. The only thing that bothers me is that the slow-motion flashback seems really cheesy.

The line "young and naive" part wouldn't sound so bad if it weren't for the fact that all of the beautiful cut scenes go away and there's just plain text that says "young and naive."

She was so naive and young to be looking out the window at those buildings and flashbacking to giving a thumbs down like that! But you know, it reminds of a time when I was younger...sometimes when I was in a building I would look out the window at the other buildings and then flashback to giving a thumbs down... :-[ Looking back I feel a little ashamed at how naive I was, but I can relate to Samus' life.

Sometimes when you're young and in a building you just can't help but look out the window at other buildings and flashback to giving a thumbs down. But you can't live your life regretting these silly decisions made as a naive youngster; besides, who among us hasn't looked out the window at other buildings when they were younger and flashbacked to giving a thumbs down?

Kind of a boring trailer, had no point. Still I'm more excited for Other M then any of the Prime games or even SMG2!

This is kind of a "worst of" trailer. Everything else I've seen (impressions, other trailers, leaked intro cinematic) has looked great.

The trailer is produced well enough, but what does any of this have to do with Metroid? It just feels like Nintendo is shoehorning a lot of character development into a series that has done extremely well without it for over 20 years. I don't mind if the new elements bring something new and awesome to the franchise, but what they're showing so far is neither particularly new (seems like rehash from Fusion's script) nor awesome. Note: I'm not talking about the gameplay changes. I'm amenable and optimistic about those.

I don't know about there not being any character development in Metroid. For me, at least, Metroid is very much about character development. It's just that the usual character development in Metroid is through the power-ups. Now these clearly aren't the same types of character development, but I think it means that they understand what makes it compelling. Just saying, I wouldn't give up on it just yet. Especially after all of the controversy surrounding Prime before it's release turned out to be nothing. I think Nintendo tends to know more about Metroid than the fans give them credit for. I'm not saying the story will be great, and I'm still cautious, but I think we have to wait and see before passing judgment.

Eh I'm not bothered by Samus' voice really. Maybe the years & years of bad anime dubbing has numbed my senses.

LOL I thought the same thing.  The thumbs-down comes out of nowhere and you're like, "What the heck is she giving thumbs down to?  Is a gladiator about to kill somebody in front of her?"

This isn't bad, it's just that it's so....Japanese.  Very unlike every other Metroid game, whether it was made in Japan or not.

This is great! You heartless animals! I thought the acting was decent, and I am very happy to be really learning more about Samus. Metroid is one of the few Nintendo franchises that can break away from it's nothing but game play core with more main stream appeal by having a story like this and classic gameplay. You have the most Metroid of Metroid games possible through Super Metroid, Zero Mission, and Prime 1. Prime 2, and Fusion both steadily led is into more cut scenes and dialogue, it's just the way the series is headed. I say just get used to it, and be happy it won't just be shooting Zelda again.

Well, she is actually younger in this new trailer. When Other M actually takes place, she is older with a ponytail. So this is her looking back on her days with the Galactic Federation.

My initial excitement for the gameplay is turning more and more into dread at the story aspects of it.

And DARN. I thought somebody said that the blonde in the original E3 trailers was NOT Samus but some other female character in the game?!?!

This isn't bad, it's just that it's so....Japanese.

Too Japanese. Oh god I know we're judging the game based on a minute of cutscene here, but... I've got a bad feeling about this.

After taking another look I am left feeling very wary of this game. Since I have my doubts about the control scheme, my new worries over the story serve to compound my trepidation. Perhaps I am too young, young and naive... but it looks like Nintendo needs to shorten Team Ninja's leash a bit more. Past entries have been very western with Retro behind the wheel, and I think this is Nintendo's attempt to revive Metroid as a big hit in Japan.

I just don't get it.  What is the point of this trailer? Why does it make me want to play the game?  What does it show me to peak my interest?  How the hell does it relate to the series?  :P:

There's just not much there.  A guy says "lady" so clearly that's Adam, from Fusion.  And?   :confused;

I can't remember being so underwhelmed by a trailer ever before.  :'(

Sounds like what people said about Prime. Seriously this is kind of silly, gameplay impressions have been fantastic from people who played the game. Yet it is blatantly ignored.

Lump me in with the optimistic group.  I have no problem with the trailer, other than the fact that it just doesn't make much sense.  There's just very little context for it's content; I've never played Metroid Fusion, so I don't know if that would help.

I just listened to a Gamespot interview with Nate Bihldorff where he stated that the game is a combination of 3D and 2D platforming, and that re-traversing areas and gaining ability upgrades are a part of the game.  Sounds good enough for me for now, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

I just hope that Nintendo starts releasing video of the gameplay soon, and I'm looking forward to getting impressions beyond that half-hour demo.  Specifically, I'd like to know if the "weapon authorization" mechanic persists throughout the game, or if it changes; and if that sense of Metroid exploration is still captured.
