I saw that Nintendo posted a new trailer for Other M, and I freaked. "Finally," I thought. "We'll get to see quality video of the gameplay."

Writing this news article was depressing after that...

We have to keep in mind, THIS IS NINTENDO, the company that likes to keep things secret right up to launch. With most games they can't get away with showing cut scenes, with this they can and still keep the gameplay secret.

Metroid: Other M is probably going to be one of these games that is fun to play but has a story so stupid that you'll feel embarrassed to play the game in front of friends and family.  While annoying, that isn't that crucial.  I'm more concerned about some of the gameplay elements that have raised red flags.

The story will be dumb.  It will come across as something a 12 year old would write.  That's videogames.  Is that alone going to ruin the game for you?

I wish they would let Retro do a 3D version of Metroid II or Super Metroid.  That could be incredibly awesome.

I would like a WiiWare "Rebirth"-style version of Metroid II: Return of Samus.

Wouldn't that just be Prime with a different setting?
I don't think SM needs remaking, it's fine the way it is (okay, could maybe use the shoulder button missiles from ZM). If you want to make another game make it a separate game, not a remake. With Nintendo games the difference between a remake and a sequel is negligible anyway (since like the legends and epics of the ancient worlds they're just retellings of the same basic idea) and a remake would just tie them to specifics that were intended for a different game.

At least that looked better than the 2D gameplay, AMIRITE?

One kudo is that Team Ninja knows how to model people better than Retro. Retro does everything else fantastic except for humans.

Ya'll should check out Another Metroid II Remake (Google that). Some dude is trying to create a Metroid II "rebirth" from the ground up. It's been years in development already, and I really hope he finishes it.

But to be fair, are the characters in the Metroid universe even humans? They are definitely human-like, but I was under the impression this took place in another galaxy or something, so how do we know they are human (as in Homo Sapiens)?

I hope he does manage to release something before the dreaded cease and desist flies down upon him.

They're mostly fine for what the engine was doing, with character designs by Western artists (the game focused on environments).  Compare Prime 1 Samus (pretty icky uncanny back then) with Eternal Darkness people for a history lesson.

This is different from a 1-on-1 fighting game or the REmake where tons of attention had to be paid to 3rd person character presentation.

And really, Prime 3 Samus didn't look bad with those slightly aggressive eyes, dribbling neon goop from her lips.

Where's the real Metroid, Metroid Dread?

Where's the real Metroid

I've been waiting for that ever since Super Metroid. I don't feel anything since then has done the franchise justice. Not that the Prime games are bad or anything, but they are FPS and therefore more akin to Halo, Doom, Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem, etc. than Metroid.

I guess that depends how accurate the comic is (you'd think it is, considering that this is the first mention of K-2L, which is later covered in the games), but it would indicate, yes.

Prime is nothing like any of those games, just because the perspective is the same doesn't mean it is the same genre. That is like saying Super Mario 64 is like Ratchet and Clank because they are 3rd person.

Also what about Zero Mission?

It's off-putting.  Team Sakamoto doesn't know the difference between the Power Suit and the Varia Suit.

In regards to the nose, couldn't it be that he just had some cosmetic surgery done? People do that in real life, you know. Why is it unthinkable that people in the future (or in other galaxies) would do the same? So that's how you can explain something like that.

But in the end, does it really even matter?

To me Metroid Prime captured the essence of Metroid. It didn't need to have the same detail gameplay as long as the structure and core of Metroid is in place. I wouldn't object to Other M's gameplay if Sakamoto hadn't said that it'll be like fusion and thus lack the core of Metroid.

It matters because if you're going to put in a huge effort to make a cinematic game, you should at least be consistent in your modeling.  But, if there is an actual reason for the change, that matters too.
