Pop Tarts are a dessert
« on: May 04, 2009, 06:11:46 PM »
Pop Tarts used to be a somewhat-acceptable breakfast food, but almost every flavour available now seems to resemble a dessert and is overloaded with sugar. Even the few remaining fruit flavours now have frosting on them; the only non-frosting flavour left is strawberry. It's been pushed to a small space in the corner of the shelf and is often sold out, so I'm not the only one who misses the simplistic flavours of Pop-Tarts.

I don't know how Pop Tarts can still pass as a breakfast food; with all those empty calories they're a lot more in line with desserts. If I eat that much sugar, it's going to go straight to my butt. I'd have to do, like, 25 sit-ups just to work that off.

Just look at this listing of flavours from the back of the box:

Chocolate Chip
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
Chocolate Fudge
Cookies 'n Creme
Hot Fudge Sunday
Strawberry Milkshake

It's like I'm naming flavours of ice cream.

Sit-ups won't trim dat AZZ.  You'd have to practice knee-bashes and back-kicks.

Pop Tarts aren't a proper breakfast until you include Coca-Cola Classic.

Is it really any different than sweet cereals with marshmellows or chocolate flavoured cereal pieces?  Reese puffs taste like you're eating a bowl of peanut butter cups... which is exactly why I love them. :)  Tons of people also eat cinnamon buns or donuts or fast food for breakfast.  All of that is bad for you.

I never ate Pop Tarts as a breakfast.  Being something that tastes, you know, good my Mom instinctively hated them.  I think I was driving a car before I ever ate a Pop Tart.  Anyway, to me they were always snacks anyway.

In my personal experience snacks and desserts are where the extra pounds come from anyway.  I found the secret to staying thin is routine cardio excercise and only eating three meals a day and literally nothing else.  So if I really have a craving for a big bag of chips, I'll buy one but that will be my whole dinner.  The idea of eating a bag of chips for dinner sounds like something only a huge lardo would do but compare that to the guy who eats a full dinner and then eats a bag of chips while watching the football game.  Who had more calories during that day?

So Pop Tarts for breakfast isn't all that healthy.  I wouldn't suggest it every breakfast.  But if you do that and then eat a normal lunch and a normal dinner and don't snack in the time in between, it's not that big of a deal.

I had no idea there was a cookie dough Pop Tart though.  Now I want one.

Well, it's obvious I don't really exercise since I don't know what exercises do what.

Don't even get me started on Coca-Cola...

There is a difference, yes. The dessert flavours of Pop-Tarts are replacing the regular flavours. With cereal, I can still get Cheerios, Shredded Wheat, Cream of Wheat, Malt-o-Meal, and plain oatmeal. Soon I won't be able to get non-frosted, fruit-filled Pop-Tarts. I guess there's still the option of Toaster Strudels and not using the icing, but those need to be toasted and seem sweeter than Pop-Tarts.

I've heard it is best to have six small meals a day, which will help keep your metabolism up. That's not what I try to do, because I don't really have the chance to do that. In my case, it really does matter what I eat even if I stick with the three-meals-a-day-and-no-snacks type of diet, since I don't exercise much and a slow metabolism runs in my family. Therefore I couldn't replace a meal with a dessert like Pop-Tarts or a bag of chips because those foods don't contain enough vitamins and minerals, and all of that fat and sugar is going to stay with me.

Though I don't think it is ever a good idea to eat desserts or fast-food or any of that. What you get out of your body depends on what you put into it.

I had no idea there was a cookie dough Pop Tart though.  Now I want one.
Ah dirty floors, I've inadvertently advertised for Pop-Tarts. :-\

Tried them once, and never had them again. They are not a dessert. They are a snack, and an awful one at that.
My breakfast is almost always green tea with milk, a bun with jam (blueberry, cherry, currant, or whatever it is my dad bought) and chocolate chips which melt once I heat the bun on the microwave, and sometimes a piece of fruit (banana, peach, plum, or mango).

Ok first off, Mop it up, your FP sounded very girl like. Are you a girl? (it would explain alot)

Secondly, I agree with you. I remember when blueberry, my favorite flavor, didn't have frosting. That seems like ages ago now. I haven't eaten a pop tart in years. And even when I use to, we quickly replaced them with toaster struddles (which are sooo much better) and then a little later, eggs, turkey bacon, fruit and bread.

Thirdly, diets don't work; just have sex more.....Seriously. I eat around the clock. Whether it's an apple or tuna salad or whatever. If I'm hungry, I'm going to eat; plain and simple. And that's how it should be. I fucking hate fast food and all other types of disgusting prepackaged foods because I actually enjoy cooking and eating at home. I feel like a glutton for saying this, but I fucking love food. I love everything about it; all the delicious combinations that are just so easy to make. Those big meals with eight different courses is like a dream come true. Hell, I like to fast before Thanksgiving just so I can eat for hours.

Every time I eat outside food in a fancy restaurant or whatever, unless it's sushi or wings, I always feel like I could make it better. I'm the worst when I'm at a restaurant because of my love for food. It's weird sure, but have you ever stared at a menu and been like "None of this **** sounds good!" Once it comes out, I'm already bitching about how it needs a lime or a little heat or whatever. That's why I don't eat at a restaurant unless the owner or their family is the one cooking my food. Those small, hole-in-the-wall, non-chain restaurants are the only places I like.

Anyway, constricting your intake is never the answer. It's what you eat that matters. Just stay away from disgusting **** and you'll be fine.

Oh and if your metabolism is slower than average, make sure to drink lots of water everyday.

Man they don't have the Apple Pop Tarts anymore? Those and the unfrosted Strawberry ones were the only ones I liked as a kid.

Also, I agree they totally aren't a breakfast food. Me and my brothers used to eat 1 pop tart as a dessert ages ago.

I've never liked these things. I think its just one of those situations where, because i never had it as a kid the adult me just can't stand it. Who hear drinks the original V8 drinks? You know, the tomato juice ones and not the fruity V8 Splash..

Well I love those things to death because my grandmother would give them to me all the time when I was a small kid. I prefer those over V8 Splash any day of the week, but my friends (and even some family) think its the most disgusting thing in the world. Oh well, because I have the same reaction when they eat Pop Tarts. I never had one as a kid, and when i tried one in High School I spit it out. My friends tried to convince me I didn't like the taste beacuse it wasn't warm and out of the toaster, but to be honest when i did try one "the real way" i thought it was even more disgusting.

I can't drink old V8 cuz it confuses my brain.  It makes me think "mmmmmm sauce, but wait, where's the pizza and bread and cheese?  am I supposed to chew this?" then my brain gets stuck and I can't enjoy it.

I drink V8 Splash everyday cuz that's where I get my vitamins.

Ya, but that only works for a couple of things. For instance, I hated all sorts of vegetables when I was kid. Now I enjoy the taste of almost every single one...raw no less. I like biting into a ripe tomato as much as I like biting into an apple. (tomato is a vegetable in my eyes)

But ya....V8 is disgusting. The only time where I have enjoyed it is on the off chance that I make a bloody mary (but I still need lots of pepper).

V8 splash is money though.

See I would be the exact opposite.  I KNOW I can't cook worth a **** so when I go to a restaurant I have confidence that the food I get will be vastly superior to anything I would ever make myself.  I just don't think of the details when cooking.  I can't think of a side dish or what to add to this or that to add this or that flavour.  Those little details just don't come to me with food preperation at all.  I also have to say that my Mom isn't a very good cook (probably a genetic thing).  I hear all these people go on about how no one cooks better than their mom and I can't relate.  She isn't bad, she just isn't very good.  It's not terrible, it's just nothing you would specifically crave eating.  So for my brothers and I going to a restaurant was a real treat when we were kids.  "Alright!  We get to eat something GOOD!!"  As I've noted many times my Mom was also very anti-fun and when you're a kid going out to dinner and having a burger or pizza or fish 'n' chips is FUN so that had to be a very VERY rare occurance (ie: my Dad wants to go to a restaurant; Dad never seemed to care if OUR fun was being ruined but would put his foot down when HIS fun was).

I have had times though where an entire menu looks unappealing.  It's usually at a really fancy place that tries too hard, if you get what I mean.  Like they can't serve the meal with white rice, it has to be wild rice.  Can't use lettuce when you can use cabbage.  Sometimes there is such an attempt to make the meal seem fancy and stand out that it tastes like **** because they don't want to be conventional.  Though oddly enough these places usually have the most AWESOME desserts.

Lol thats true for most kids though, huh? I know i was the same way. Last night I was home with the family and my mom made dinner; breated chicken cutlets with yellow rice and broccoli. I was the only one asking for more broccoli cuz i just can't get enough of that stuff now. When i was a kid though, the only time you'd catch me eating it was if it was when it was part of the Chinese take out places' beef n broccoli, and only if it was smothered in the soy sauce.

Toaster Strudels are better
I like the crust better but the filling is too sweet. Plus they need to be toasted; when I'm running late, I just grab a Pop-Tart without toasting it.

Oh and if your metabolism is slower than average, make sure to drink lots of water everyday.
I do, about 64 ounces everyday. I keep a 32-ounce bottle of water in the fridge which I just grab whenever I get thirsty.

Man they don't have the Apple Pop Tarts anymore? Those and the unfrosted Strawberry ones were the only ones I liked as a kid.
I haven't seen them in years. All I can ever find are the strawberry ones, and even they will usually be sold out if I go shopping on the weekend.

I don't care if anyone thinks they are nasty, I love Pop-Tarts.
I like the plain fruit ones, but the dessert-type ones are nowhere near as good as the desserts they try to imitate. If I'm going to consume empty calories, it has to be something that would be worth it.

I've never liked these things. I think its just one of those situations where, because i never had it as a kid the adult me just can't stand it.
I think many people are like this, they tend to prefer foods they grew up with. That's why it's important to get kids to eat vegetables, because if they don't learn healthy eating habits when they are young, they won't have them as an adult either.

I caught the end of a commercial for Pop-Tarts the other day where a mom was serving her kids ice cream with half a Pop-Tart sticking out of it, so I think Kellogg agrees that they're a dessert.
They are still in the breakfast aisle, so I'm not so sure about that.
