December 5th WiFi Night Recap
« on: December 06, 2008, 07:43:21 AM »
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/blogArt.cfm?artid=17309

Yesterday's Official NWR WiFi Night was a success.  Several people showed up and a lot of good games were going on.  I was pretty excited about trying some Smash again, as I hadn't played for several months after being totally let down by the lag-filled online matches.

Overall, I was able to have some extremely entertaining matches after I adjusted to the button lag.  Vudu hosted one game that I joined with General Traag and his roommate.  We played for quite a while and I lost the vast majority of the time.  Traag and friend are definitely experienced Brawl players.  After Vudu decided to call it a night, I moved on to trying several other games out.  This is where most of the problems I experienced happened.  I believe I tried to play with Maxi about a dozen times, each attempt resulting in a terrible frame rate and then a complete drop of the game.  After some discussion in the chat room, I discovered that Flames_of_Chaos lived only about six hours from me and his Fios connection resulted in the first ever green connection dot I had ever seen.  So I finished off the night playing with him and Djunknown for a while.  Sadly, we had to say no whenever Maxi tried to join in order to preserve our connection.  Sorry Maxi!  After about two and a half hours of under blinking, my eyes were on fire and I had to call it a night.

It looks like the Brawl playing went will into the wii hours (hah, sorry) of the night.  Participants should put their own stories up in the talkback!  If you missed this one, make sure you keep an eye out for next month's!  The Matchmaking & Smacktalk forum is where the voting threads show up.  You can also follow NWR's Twitter feed for notification!

After Vudu decided to call it a night, I moved on to trying several other games out.  This is where most of the problems I experienced happened.

This is why I said once you find a game with tolerable lag and good opponents you stick with it.  Connections can be pretty spotty so savor the good ones.

Maxi's Internet connection sucks.  You may remember from the Mario Kart WiFi night last month that he constantly drops out of matches.  I don't think he was able to get through more than two races last month (at least during the time I was playing).

If you missed this one, make sure you keep an eye out for next month's!  The Matchmaking & Smacktalk forum is where the voting threads show up.

I'm going to begin campaigning for Bomberman Blast.  It supports 8-player matches (so we can get more people playing together than Brawl's 4-players), it's cheap ($10), available to everyone (WiiWare) and totally sweet and hectic.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Pale if it allowed people to play than I am OK with it.I played vs S_B a few times I managed to beat him once I didn't have much luck afterwards.I played vs Djunknown and I won some.UPB,White Mage and I had some great matches.I played till I think 11:30 the lag was better the second half.

I suggest Animal Crossing next month.
Maxi is dead. I killed him and took his posts and changed genders.

I had fun. I had forgotten how enjoyable this game can be.

Why don't we just make fridays the official NWR SSBB night or something?

I second this. I've been itching for some online Brawl lately, and when I learned about this it was too late.

Friday night would be great.

I completely agree!  I hadn't really played SSBB in so long that I didn't remember how frantic and exciting playing it really is.  I'm very glad I was able to take part in the WiFi Night.

I also wouldn't mind having a dedicated NWR SSBB night.  Maybe eventually leading up to a tournament of some sort?

I like a dedicated night for Brawl.I like the idea of a tournament. I might be able to be able get maybe half way through the tournament.

Had some good matches between PBear, DJUnk, and - IIRC - Maxi.

Particularly, I had one match as Toon Link where I survived a legendary Pokemon at the end by using a smash ball (and it's invulnerability) to hit the last remaining player off the stage while the Pokemon was doing its thing.  I connected with link's final smash in mid-fall, which is often near impossible online and thus likely entirely luck :)

The wifi night was good fun, but it would have been cool if we had some way to rotate through the players. I know that there were nearly a dozen people online at the same time as me but I only played three of them. I would have liked to have seen more of the people in matches. Also, I enjoy 1vs1 duels, so the opportunity to set up some of those would have been cool too. I guess a little bit of organization would go a long way, but it was great to see so many people involved.

I enjoyed the few matches I played, but the lag was so horrible at times that the fight slowed down to an almost comical slideshow at times. Connections were dropped, friends "changed their status," etc. Overall, Brawl just makes me remember how great Mario Kart is online. And at least 75% of my Brawl list is still "awaiting registration," even people who I KNOW added me months ago.

But I did have a lot of fun on Friday night. I look forward to making this a monthly tradition. But please, let's pick a game with a halfway functional online mode! :-)

Me and cousin live about 30 minutes away, and the best I can get is a yellow  :'(

I can vouch that this above statement is true  ;)

Yeah, me and him, Shecky and Ultimate Party Bear with a few others got some great matches in. That's the thing with SSSB, you don't know whose connection is gonna be compatible with who.

I had my cousin over, who played a few matches in my name, so if he was being a bit of clown, you know why  :-\
After a while, I plugged my other controller and we mixed it with the rest of the field.

You mean something similiar to this?

It was a great night for Brawl. Perhaps  Nintendo added more servers or something? I remember around launch that 3-4 player matches were laggy. Whatever it is, its more tolerable.

That reminds me... does anyone remember to record matches after they happen.  I always end up mashing next after a match and forgetting about that option.

I found the lag much more tolerable than any other time I've ever played, and even managed to pull off a few moves I was rather proud of.  It may have had something to do with playing mostly Midwesterners.  There were only two connection problems all night.  I couldn't join any matches when I first signed on, but after getting disconnected it started working.  Later, a match with Shecky and Djunknown suddenly stopped with no warning.

That reminds me... does anyone remember to record matches after they happen.  I always end up mashing next after a match and forgetting about that option.

It seemed like every time I thought a match was interesting enough to keep, I didn't have the option.

There's a 3min rule for recording.

STOCK MATCHES generally run too long to record.  Gotta set a time limit to 3min if you hope to record at all.

I only record a match if it something silly or hilarious happens during it or I end it with a Bowsercide (carrying someone off the stage with Bowser's flying slam) but that's only because I toyed with the idea of making a music video where Bowser carries someone off the stage with him on every beat and name it "Ode to Bowsercide" or something.

I'll never do it because I'm just not that hardcore, though.
