The website 'Game Daily' has an article detailing the advertisements in Burnout Paradise. Holy crap, I do not want to play a game that I paid $60 for, tune in to the in game radio and hear a commercial for Nike.

I realize that this game is different where it has a perpetual online world and the alternative is a monthly subscription. Still, the ad revenue potential is so great that a full price game in this model is almost an insult.

I also do not like the change in play style. Its Test Drive with better graphics. Why even call it Burnout? Its like making 5 Superman movies where he flies and has super strength then make a new one where he has a jetpack and wears a mask.

This game may find an audience, and it may win previous fans over, but I long for the gameplay of the other games with new crash zones and racing maps. Maybe I just need to transition over to Flat Out 2?

Midnight Run is my second favorite De Niro movie ever.

On the subject, I probably won't get to play this game until the next time I hang out at my buddies place.

I do actually want to give this a look, but the whole free roam idea kind of bugs me in the sense that it seems like they're going for a deep immersion factor over the arcade type of game that I had liked to begin with.  I hope I'm wrong about it, but I just can't shake the feeling.

Well, the first has to be Goodfellas then.

Actually it's Ronin.

Goodfellas would probably place third, but I had read the book first so that spoiled the movie a bit for me.

Ronin?  What is wrong with you?

I haven't seen it since it first came out, but I remember being underwhelmed.  Maybe I should give it another shot, but it certainly isn't worthy of being anyone's favorite De Niro movie.

EDIT:  Goddamn time travel.

This game is horrible. Open world environment with invincible fences everywhere, no instant restarting, Showtime mode is a hopeless replacement for Crash mode, sloppy seconds soundtrack from Burnout Dominator, and everything just feels so lifeless. Uuuuggggh. I should have picked up Flatout Ultimate Carnage instead. >=(((

I don't love the series.  I just like Burnout 2 with the Logitech Speedforce racing set I won from Nintendo Power.

I don't know if I can agree with all of that. I think adding the open world aspect to the game made it worth getting for me. I haven't felt restricted by the invincible fences, sure they're there and it would be nice to get through some if not most of them, but before you said anything I hadn't really thought of it. I will admit that no instant restarting is a big drawback, however, I believe that they didn't put it in the game because of the open world aspect. It wouldn't make much sense tele-porting back to the start when you can always drive back, but of course Need for speed has been doing it since at least what? Most Wanted? So even that doesn't make much sense. So, yes its a pretty big problem. Showtime mode is good for me, but you're right its not good for crash mode going away. The soundtrack is abysmal. The second I heard Avril Lavigne - Girlfriend, I immediately said, "what the heck?!?", freaked out for about a minute, and then turned the soundtrack off and started my own music. My only real complaint in the game I had before reading all this was that DJ Atomica needs to stop saying who he is. We know. We know...But all in all I think its a great game. I'd give it a 7 out of 10.

I think I missed something with this game.  I played it for a couple of hours, and I was seriously underwhelmed.  Is there more to it than the races and other events?  It seemed like a large chunk of the game was missing, because I never found anything worthwhile.  I made my way to the C license doing races and stunt runs, but they all seemed to be the same to me.  The most annoying part by far was the slow motion replay EVERY SINGLE TIME my car grazed any other object on the road, be it a car, a barrier, or a building.  I couldn't go more than 30 seconds without the game slowing down to show my car crashing.  Why?  And why bother with an "open world" when you can't even get out of your car?  I'm sure to keep an E rating, they had to remove anything resembling people from the game, but Paradise City just felt like a barren world with nothing to do.

And for the record, I enjoy racing games – all types of them in fact: Mario Kart, Gran Turismo, Metropolis Street Racer (the forerunner to Project Gotham Racing), Need for Speed.  I just really didn't understand this game.

Criterion was going for a Burnout game where you're free to burn everywhere! Smash here, crash there, and race everywhere. You have the freedom to burn whereever you want in this Burnout playground.

... and that freedom might be working against it. Circuit racing give you clear goals and directions (and a few turns to remember). Now Paradise always has point-to-point races and you have a vague direction to head to. Either you memorize the path you want to take or read the map all the time. Doesn't sound quite fun for some.

Anyone see the new update releases that after the update code named "Cagney" comes out, Criterion will start experimenting with Airplanes for the next update to Burnout Paradise (or another Burnout of some kind). Cagney will include motorcycles, day and night racing, and new online modes. So, what now? You guys think airplanes are a realistic goal for burnout?

It seems like a potential good idea, but how would it actually work? Are they going to clip the wings so the airplanes stay on the ground, or will there be sky races with buildings to run into.

Yes, I was excited to hear this news. I may actually pick the game up now. I'm not sure which version to get though. Probably on the 360 since I know more people there.

I have it for the PS3, but if you're friends are on the 360 go there, there's actually a large number of people still playing this online.

I asked for and got this game for Christmas. It's in the weird position of being something that, had I rented it first, I wouldn't have bought, but now that I have it I won't trade it in and will in fact play it from time to time.
